#187 - The BEST Improvisation Exercise For Guitar! (finally solo like a PRO)

Welcome to another wishlist lesson, my friends! You voted for improvisation with intervallic functions, the amazing system I teased a couple of weeks ago :) Time to really dive in, let's see if this is the perfect system for your next guitar solo.
Get the full improvisation workout here: https://www.dropbox.com/sh/nx15ucd1j7aluy0/AADU9WzJU-nkkAXEfhJjPnEGa?dl=0

The idea behind this workout is to visualize the neck in intervals, with the most common arpeggio shapes and scales (major and minor). You are working from a different interval starting point with each repetition and that will give you much more freedom with your improvised licks and lines :)

Concerning the next shred collab: I posted the backing track and all instructions in the VIP Facebook group, make sure to check it out if you're a VIP or Platinum Member! Can't wait to edit your videos, the deadline is September 30th - have fun shredding!
I hope you have tons of fun exploring this, have an awesome day :)

Something about this finally clicked and I can actually memorize all the scales and solo with them!! Thanks Bernth!

Tucker Snyder

why is this back to front?

Joe fuller

were you guys able to find the G Major backing track, the one Bernth improvises over towards the end of the video? could not find it with the rest of the files.

Mark Escobar

thanks so much bernth

Awesome lesson

Hey Erwin, I'd suggest either working with minor/major seventh arpeggios or the G major scale and its modes at first :) There are more options that we will explore as well, but you are right - it won't sound great or correct if you play the scale for each chord (G major, A minor, B minor, C major,...). That might work if the chords are ringing out for a long time and you see it as a key change, but with quick-moving chords and with keeping the harmonic context of G major, it's not the way to go :)

Bernd Brodträger

When practising the improv exercise G Major scale, playing the scale notes or modes is correct, but is the diatonic approach also valid for the G major scale : G-Am-Bm-C-D7-Em-F#0 , so can I play the scales of each diatonic chord within G major over G major? For C that means with F. I'm a bit confused when to play which note, playing diatonic or in modes or stay with the notes in the G scale?

In the Dropbox link you cannot find the exercise "Practical Example" that you play in minute 9 of this video

Thanks for your inspiring word but I'm not so good as guitar player 😂😂😂, I work hard for reach very few progress, maybe there is something that I made wrong in my practice plan, but I'm thinking to joint the VIP or Platinum group for stay more focused on guitar

Vincenzo

You can if you want to, thank you for your incredible support, Vincenzo! The next Platinum Member workshop will be this Saturday, so you will be part of that as well :)

Bernd Brodträger

Can I upgrade my Subscription in platinum ?

Vincenzo

you're the absolute best guitar patreon in my opinion. huge value every video!

Andrei Cristof

Thanks for asking, William! The chords are in the Guitar Pro file, did you check it out already? That way you can write your own solo or loop them to improvise :) In case you don't have Guitar Pro, you can also use the free/shareware alternative Tuxguitar :)

Bernd Brodträger

Hey Bernth, on the Improvisation Workout, were there suppose be another Backing Track to play the chord changes like you did close to the end of the video? Thanks for your time.

William L Williams

You're right, I can easily apply it to the higher strings. I just wanted to make sure I wasn't missing anything. Thanks again for yet another great workout.

burntginger

I'd love to, it depends on how the next lesson voting goes :) Here's a great starting point: https://www.patreon.com/posts/115-best-rhythm-41700058

Bernd Brodträger

Can you teach metal rhythm. I don't see any topic on this.

suria kumar

Thanks for asking! I'd love to explore it further with more exercises, let's see how the community decides with the next lesson voting :) But once you memorize the interval structure, it will be easy to apply it to any root in any location of the fretboard!

Bernd Brodträger

Hi Bernth. Love this work out. Question, is there or will there be a version of this for the G, B and E strings? Thanks.

burntginger

Oh, I thought it is another video lesson for this :) Thx

Przemo Kam

Thanks for asking! Please check the full post to find the Dropbox folder with the workout :)

Bernd Brodträger

Where is this "Improvisation workout" you talk about and advertise in 8:00?

Przemo Kam

I'd love to do a video on vibrato and string bending! I'll add it to the next lesson wishlist :)

Bernd Brodträger

Yes, it's tons of fun!! :)

Bernd Brodträger

Oh dang, I better get to work! this will be fun!!!

bryscorpio

I’d need 36 hours every day for work at the hospital, continuous education, family, long runs, gardening, listening to new music, coding my diabetes simulator, watching TED talks and Veritasium videos on YT, and practising guitar. 😵‍💫😵‍💫😵‍💫 Just got a 7-string 🎸, I guess family and gardening will have to go 😂

Lorenzo Sandini

Should work now, please let me know :)

Bernd Brodträger

Hi Bernth , i have problem accessing the video , please check , thanks !

Bernth I need help on upbend Vibrato, feels so uncordinated. Especially when your bending upto pitch and then adding vibrato. I dont know what I am doing wrong.

Stihl Savvy

Bernth amazing as always, and a belated happy 30th birthday mate 🤘

Heath Triffitt

Thanks Bernth awesome stuff as always My improv needs quite a bit of work

jaz

Thank you Bernth, this is a much welcomed routine to practice and learn as with all the other quality lessons you upload for us. Thank you.

William L Williams

Next August I will take the guitar with me in my vacation, great lesson.

Vincenzo

Ugh, I haven't had enough coffee yet. I typed up a comment about how I can't keep up with the awesome quantity of lessons and how excited I am that this fits into my routine and then instead of hitting "Edit" I hit "Delete" 🤦🏻‍♂️Oh well, everyone knows Bernth lessons rule and this one will slide right into any routine! SICHERHEIT!

Eric Bailey

Man, it's lessons like these that distinguish you from the other metal shredders. I love how you balance metal with fusion moments to open our minds a bit, but never lose focus on the fact that most of us want to play aggressive and fast.

John Nelson

Super Sach! :-)
