#186 - The 5 WORST Guitar Music Theory MISTAKES (and 5 exercises to FIX them!)

Before we dive into your chosen wishlist topics for this month, I'd like to share 5 common mistakes and misconceptions concerning guitar music theory :)

These topics are inspired by the messages you guys and girls sent me over the last weeks - I know that theory can seem a bit complicated at first but I promise: it's not that hard and it really pays off to work on it!

Get all your files for this lesson here: https://www.dropbox.com/sh/t2axvy1d6t7rscf/AAByGb6DEGGfR5f6RCOUZjl5a?dl=0

The most important files are the Guitar Pro files in this case - you can make adjustments, change the tempo, and have separate tracks for rhythm and lead guitar! If you don't have Guitar Pro, you can also open them with the free/shareware Tuxguitar! This is also what you can use for topic 4 on the list :)

And here's the Fretboard Mastery Course I talked about in the last chapter of the video: https://www.patreon.com/posts/169-fretboard-51121969

Hope this helps, have an awesome day!!

#186 - The 5 WORST Guitar Music Theory MISTAKES (and 5 exercises to FIX them!)

I have been playing guitar since I was 12. I gigged for many many years and now just play a little here and there. I have always struggled with falling back into the good ol penta's and root soloing. Much appreciated for you to help us break out of the same ol ruts that have plagued me for years. When I am improving I am tired of reverting back to the relative minor and shredding pentas...boring!

Ah, so it's a D7 chord? The play along video listed it as just a D chord, which is why I assumed a maj7. Also, the theory PDF doesn't list the chords on it, which would make it easier to relate the two notes in each bar to a chord. Thanks so much for all of the helpful replies. I really appreciate it, and just upped my membership, so I can vote on up-coming topics!

Great question! The section is written in the key of G major - you have D7 (minor seventh, C) on V and not Dmaj7 :)

Bernd Brodträger

On the exercise for targeting 3rds and 7ths, how come the D chord use F# and C, instead of F# and C#?

Jeffrey Harmon

Thanks for sharing this Daniel, great to have you here - happy I could help out already, I'll keep the lessons coming! :)

Thank you so much I’ve picked up my guitar again after 10 years of not playing (I was a drummer for a while) I have found a lot of inspiration and great work outs to get my fingers moving. Thanks for all the videos I look forward to fresh new material. Good luck on your journey everyone!

Thanks so much for sharing this Jim, that makes me really happy!! I'll keep going for sure, there's still SO much left to explore & improve - let's do it together :)

I am with Aaron on this one 100%! I've played guitar for over 30 years and I can say for a fact that you can definitely teach an old dog new tricks! In following Bernth lessons and guitar guidance, I actually feel (for the first time in a LONG time) that I'm actually getting somewhere! I feel and hear the progress in my playing and Bernth has really demystified a lot of things for me on the guitar. I've been in quite a few bands over the years and have played a lot of songs... I just wish I had the knowledge I'm getting now back then! Thanks Bernth, you rock and keep up the great work!

Thanks so much for sharing this kind feedback Aaron, I'm very happy I can help out on your journey!! :)

Just wanted to say a big thank you… I have being “playing” for about 3 decades. I also play flute and a couple of other wind instruments, I can sight read, but on guitar I just stayed as a simple chords/simple scales player that whole time. I wanted to improve, but never had the motivation and every option seemed dull and clinical. You’ve changed that! I’m seeing more gains in my technique, speed, and understanding over the last month or so than in the last 30 years. You, Bernth, are a Legend! Thank you!

Aaron Garner

Another inspiring lesson Bernth. Thanks very much.

Steve Shaw

another really good one Bernth, thanks so much !

Damien Gautron

I have learned that the tab instruction is probably the most important core skill I have learned from these lessons - I have actually been able to improve construction of my music and share with others (including Bernth). Really enjoyed this lesson! oh...and dang - no secret word of the day!

I’ve been drinking from the fire hose of awesome guitar teaching you’ve put together. It’s helped to speed up my progress and build my confidence now that I’ve picked up the guitar again after such a long time.

Bernth is the best guitar teacher I have ever had. I use flat.io All guitar Pro files can be uploaded. For now flat works for me very well.
