#185 - The BEST Arpeggio Trick (one easy pattern for ALL shapes!)

Since July was all about technique, I'd like to show you an incredibly powerful theory trick concerning arpeggios today! I made a Patreon exclusive mini-course on this 2 note per string approach, including a really handy arpeggio workbook: https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1fQUqe1oVtefp-MWYYWoZHWa_cMdL0ATs?usp=sharing

Aside from all popular arpeggios, this mini-course also includes 4 example cadences so that we don't neglect the practical application of this system :) I hope you will use it to create amazing arpeggio sequences from now on, have a lot of fun trying it out!!

And another quick update: the lesson wishlist for August will go online tomorrow, can't wait to see how you all decide :)

Bernth you are an amazing Shredder, but also a great instructor on learning the basics of theory (octaves, triads, extended fingering and chords) and it is your theory basics that have captured my interest and subscription...Thank you for those lessons and pdf documents! Danker schön.

WOW. Amazing lesson. I was really struggling with Arpeggios and wanted to get more in depth in understanding and applying them in Songs and chord progressions. Thank you. :-)

Hey Jeffrey, there's also a free/shareware that can open these files called Tuxguitar :) I highly recommend working with these files, they're the most important asset - you can change the tempo, make alterations, and use them as custom backing tracks! That makes more sense than exporting 100 different files per lesson :)

Bernd Brodträger

Thanks Chris. I wasn't sure, but I haven't gotten around to dropping the money on Guitar Pro yet, although I plan to.

Jeffrey Harmon

Jeffrey - the gp5 files have the solo and backing chords as separate tracks, so you can mute and solo each one.

Chris Lee

Steve - I think you may be looking for the "Circle of Fifths"?

Chris Lee

One thing I would love to see for patreon material on lessons like this with a real backing track, is a version of the backing track that doesn't have the lead guitar. You want us to not just learn the arpeggio etudes, but to also work on our own, which would be a lot easier if I had a version of the backing chords that I could practice playing over, and making my own leads.

Jeffrey Harmon

That was something I was wondering, how you pick the right Chords in what order and whether 9,13,11, b or #

Steve Shaw

Thanks Bernth. That's a great help.

Steve Shaw

Thanks for asking about that, Steve! :) It's a confusing music theory term: it means that the minor seventh is lowered by a semitone (b7 is lowered - so the resulting interval is bb7). But that note is enharmonically equivalent to 6 (major sixth) :)

Bernd Brodträger

Could you explain what ( bb7) means, cannot get my head around it, thanks.

Steve Shaw

Thanks for sharing, Jeffrey!! There's something in the making concerning chords, I think this will make you happy :)

Bernd Brodträger

These are my favorite lessons where it doesn't just show you a trick, or an exercise, but applies it to an actual chord progression, and gives you a complete solo to practice. I would love to see more of these, especially ones where you give at least a short overview of how you chose the chords to work with. Thank for the great video!

Jeffrey Harmon

The production quality of this video is amazing. Ausgezeichnet, Bernth!

Karsten Fliegner

I usually go for a tapped string skipping arpeggio with 7ths, but this is a great way to play 2 note per string picked and legato patterns. It's going to be a great addition to the arsenal. Keep it coming!

Lance Denny

Thanks for sharing this, Steve - that's really interesting and makes total sense! :)

Bernd Brodträger

I had trouble doing the notes in my head 1,3,5,7 from a root note quickly, then I found an old scrabble set and just put all eight note on the tile holder( from A), helped a lot. Just love this lesson too. its just getting the confidence to change arpeggios with the cadence quickly.

Steve Shaw

Love this lesson!!!

Marco

Thanks so much for sharing this! Did you check these 3 episodes out already? I also had a lot of issues with my pinky (as you can see in the older videos), it takes time but working on this really pays off :) https://www.patreon.com/posts/38-finger-you-do-30853257 https://www.patreon.com/posts/99-best-finger-39131138 https://www.patreon.com/posts/83-90-of-make-37054916

Bernd Brodträger

I’ve been following your Patreon for a few months now. I’ve came across this issue where my pinky wants to remain flat no matter how much I strengthen it or practice I can’t get it to stay where I need it. When I’m not playing and curl it to the palm of my hand the pinky faces left of my palm instead of straight forward. Is there any way around this issue ?

Jabari Owens

Excellent!, Im going to practice on a flugzeug.

Mr. D

Yeeew cheers brotha 🤙🏼🤙🏼🤘🏼🎸

jaz

Great lesson in arpeggio, it will be the first one in end of August, I'd like to do legato together. Thanks man.

Vincenzo

such a great lesson!! thank you bernth!

Flugzeug! Love your approach to music and teaching

Dan Naim

Flugzeug! You really break things down to an understandable and easy approach - just goes to show you don't have to overthink things. Not to mention a bonus in further learning the note locations across the fretboard - just amazing how it all comes together.

John H

Flugzeug!

Jimmy Grieve

Thanks Bernth, The quality of your patreon is top tier. These last few mini courses have been just fantastic

Salil Karkarey

I'd love to see August be about modern guitar styles like Tim henson, Gardner Fernandes, ichika etc (and of course bernth himself) with tapping, hybrid picking etc

Alan R

It took me a while to realise there's as much, maybe more, benefit trawling through the archives of this patreon for new exercises, or even return to one's to do them at a higher level, than just waiting on the next vodeo

Alan R

Nice! Looking forward to checking this out! \m/ ( And I was "part of" the video today, wooo! :D )

Robert Bjärmyr

The videos aren't posted as one long training schedule, but rather pieces that you mix and match to create your own custom routine. :)

Robert Bjärmyr

Flugzeug! I seem to have a different problem here. The theory is clear to me, but I'm just lagging behind with the technique. So I know what to play but I'm just to slow to improvise or to play it really fast...

Daniel Lager

Thanks! This is so welcome. Perfect timing too as I’m just beginning to look for different ways to visualise these arpeggios before I get bored with all the trad box shapes ..can’t wait to get stuck in 🙌🏻

Seth

Yes👍But it's hard to keep up with your output. Actually impossible. Started 30 days Legato. I'll have to squeeze this one in somewhere. Thanks

Arvid Richter

Sounds like a great idea!! Fast moving Jazz cadences are so tough, working with shapes like this really helps I think :) Prost!

Bernd Brodträger

Happy to hear about your progress jazza, congratulations!! 🙂🤘

Bernd Brodträger

I’m a struggling jazz guitar student but I gotta steal some of this shredder approach to arpeggios. I play so slowly , so this might give me a way to incorporate a speed burst in my soloing. What say you, Bernth? Brosht!! My German word of the day😃

Bradford L Romans

Huge thanks for more amazing stuff Bernth I had my first rehearsal yesterday with my tafe class that’s never played together it was awesome ..even playing Bruce Springsteen haha .. I have improved so much in such a short time Cheers bro
