#181 - The 6 WORST Guitar Success Myths! (DEBUNKED)

Before we move to the next awesome exercises, you guys and girls voted for a video on guitar career advice! So I'd like to take the chance to share some things I learned on my personal journey :) I really hope you can learn from my mistakes!

These 6 topics are inspired by a little Q&A post we did in the Patreon VIP group and I hope that I could touch on the most important topics here - I'd love to hear about your thoughts as well since I can only speak about my experiences so far!

Since there was an interest in endorsements, I attached a PDF file of what I sent out to accompany my emails around 2015/2016, when I landed the deals with Ibanez guitars and Elixir strings! If you think about contacting companies as well, I highly suggest preparing something nice and visual, it will help you with standing out :)

Hope you have an awesome weekend, can't wait to share next week's exercises with you!!!

You are such an inspiration! Thank you 😁👏🏼

Regarding endorsements; In my experience (Mesa/Boogie, Solar Guitars, Mayones Guitars, Mooer Audio, among others) it's not a requirement to be the best musician there is - but you *do* need to provide your value and worth in PR. Basically, that's what they're buying in exchange for discounts and their PR for you in return. So - Take chances, but you must be able to back them up with your support. It's kind of like people showing up and asking for free entry, free merchandise etc. The PR value has to be higher than the product(s) cost, otherwise you'd surely decline? Just my two cents. :) Have a great evening everyone! Edit: I realize this may sound a bit like boasting, but it is absolutely not my intent. Just some helpful words that has helped me over the years. :)

My guitar career consists of not annoying my wife and dogs too much with my noise. I leave the rest up to the pro's like Bernth.

Squidly

Self taught, two years into it. Loving it!

Alfredo Medina

Tamás Piri-Cser

Thank you Bernth just a huge thank you from a little Frenchman who started playing the guitar 6 months ago

Cocteau

Thanks for the exercise.

William L Williams

Hey William, thanks for asking! This is a cool way of introducing the chromatic scale to your licks in general: https://www.patreon.com/posts/91-awesome-shred-38284869 Concerning technique, this is a cool but older shred challenge we did using the chromatic scale: https://www.patreon.com/posts/24-chromatic-28387817 Hope that helps :)

Bernd Brodträger

Hi Bernth, greetings from Virginia, USA. I know this question is a bit off topic, but do you have any exercises using the chromatic scale? Thanks.

William L Williams

Guten Abend from NC, USA, Bernth! I agree totally with your statements. I am self taught with some musical instruction in middle and high school through band classes. I played trumpet in school where I learned to read music. Your guidance has helped me tremendously over the last few months since I have joined your site on Patreon. I am not a true die hard shredder, but more of a melting pot of metal, classic, and christian worship guitar as I play actively in those styles. But your instrustion and lessons have helped "ELEVATE" (pseudo-pun intended!) my playing to a new level and for that I am truly grateful for your help. Thanks and keep the shred coming!. I do like the beginner stuff though since I am early in my speed, sweep and shred skills.

Ernie Salley

Guten Abend. Well you say Bernth, the most important talent in playing music is the ability to work hard and being systematic. greetings

Bernth, I have had some good one on one teachers when I started. I got good when I had an injury and had a full body cast. From my chest all the way down to one of my legs. I could only use my hands! So my first teacher would come to my house and I would just play. I would have three lessons a week sometimes 4. We did touch on some theory. But I was always concerned on shredding! Had one more teacher he was good also. Then I did my own thing. I then chilled a bit from the guitar. And then picked it up set on getting as good as possible. Had an on line teacher until I felt he was not teaching nothing interesting or helpful. I felt that thing all players feel "same licks, riffs, again and again." One day going through INSTAGRAM I found this guitarist playing a bit different and shredding like a Mutha f--ker! I became a PATREON! And the rest is history! I have improved SOOOOO MUCH! THANK YOU!!! BERNTH (guten abend)

I'm a self taught guitarist. I'm okay but I don't practice enough to be Bernth level epic.

Ronald Gillespie

Wait ... 14/08/1991 ... Someone is turning Dirty 30 this year! 🥳😎I'm excited for whatever the lesson is that day! 🤟🏻

Eric Bailey

Although my aim is not to become a professional guitar player, I was looking to improve my skills and therefore subscribed to Bernths’ channel. He is absolutely right with his comments and his lessons are always challenging and fun to play. Just this makes me progress forward.

Another personal favorite of mine is friends and people telling you "how lucky you are" and that "wow, things are coming easy for you" when they really don't have a grasp of the job behind it all. In a way, it's nice that it seems so effortless, but man, it really does take away from your hardship. :)

Robert Bjärmyr

Becoming a patreon member has improved my playing a lot and it does take practice , but I play things now I thought were beyond me, the best choice I have made is following your site, and it was purely by accident I came across it. So thanks Bernth for inspiring me not to put my guitar through a shredder or making a campfire with it.

Steve Shaw

Guten Abend! Great Inputs and very authentic. Playing the guitar was always a hobby for me but a very ambitious hobby. I try to give my best to reach the most with the time I invest. My goal is to play live gigs around the world without loosing money. I think this is also already really ambitious...

Daniel Lager
