#180 - 3 EXERCISES I Wish I Knew As A Beginner Guitarist!

You guys and girls voted for rhythm guitar exercises with a focus on developing an effective wrist motion - so I'm more than happy to deliver 3 awesome workouts today!!

Here are all your files for this video (play-alongs, backing tracks, GP files, PDF tabs): https://www.dropbox.com/sh/mgeax1pyin48bvw/AACAhqgIp1UC1W8I4ggzLNVVa?dl=0

What helped me the most with my picking hand (concerning timing, rhythm, and wrist motion) is focusing on string skipping and rhythm workouts like the ones shown in the video. I was guilty of using a very stiff elbow motion for a long time and this really held me back on my journey - so I honestly wish I worked on some of these exercises much earlier instead of always focusing on guitar solos :)

A balanced practice session is a good session as it seems, so I'd suggest adding some rhythm workouts this week if your main focus is the current sweep picking challenge! Getting that wrist activated and loose surely doesn't hurt with anything you want to achieve on the instrument :)

i noticed the tab instructs alternate picking, in exercise 2. but when going from the 7 > 9 or 5 > 7 (A string to G string) two down strokes would be more economical. is that correct or should we strive to maintain the alternate picking?

dante liizotte

Insellllll lol

Pablo Skorpanich

Hey Bernth! Kenn dich schon länger von Youtube und finds einfach mega was bei dir abgeht! 🤘🏻 Hast du vielleicht einen Downstroke Course auch? Ich scheitere bei 180 bpm.. 😅

Christian Egger

I guess he's asking because you mentioned 'fretting hand muttting' on the video, which can also help cancelling unwanted noise

Bruno Hinckel

Looking forward to practice the INSEL workout

Pablo ML

Fantastic practicing. Woe is he who looks over rhythm / wrist unlocking over a shred! If anything, this takes the shred to the ultimate level.

Thank you so much Bernth in fact today I made this more slightly and I noticed the difference, I can follow the fast version better than before I think I just have to continue practicing , I would wish to get this voted, Where I can vote? Thanks Master I am feeling very happy everyday I just practice 1 hour with patience and I have improved so much

José Luis Fernández

Hey José, thanks for asking! You really just place your palm on the bridge slightly, there's no real change in the picking technique itself :) I can put this topic on the next lesson voting, let's see how the community decides!

Bernd Brodträger

thank you Master Bernth, Please I need another valuable advice from you, I have realized that I got in trouble when I tried the Palm Muting technique, so when I tried this exercises it seems that I got stuck in time, the slow version I can handle but when I pass to the fast version of the three exercises I got stuck, Is there a video where you show how to execute the Palm muting? I will really appreciate it, thanks in advance

José Luis Fernández

Thanks for asking, José! I mostly use my Kemper and made a course on dialing in a tone/setting up a sound here (it comes a bit later in the video): https://www.patreon.com/posts/116-guitar-home-41896762 Hope this will help :)

Bernd Brodträger

Hi Teacher Bernth I want to know How do you configure your amplifier or guitar processor to sound like your nice distortion ? I have a MG 300 NUX guitar processor, Which config do you recommend me to sound like your exercises?, thanks In advance for your advice they have helped me so much!

José Luis Fernández

understood, thanks Bernth

José Luis Fernández

It's palm muting, done by placing your picking hand wrist on the bridge, touching the strings slightly :)

Bernd Brodträger

Teacher Bernth in the excercise 1 how are you making the Palm Muting? is it with the Right hand or Left Hand using the fingers ? thanks in advance

José Luis Fernández

Thanks for asking, Tamás! I think it came from reading tons of lyrics and watching everything in English (movies, YouTube,...) - but that accent is still strong :)

Bernd Brodträger

Hey Teacher Bernth I have improved my technique playing guitar I will try these exercises, many thanks

José Luis Fernández

INSEL - about that... can I ask, how did you learn english so well Bernth? In Austria everybody learns english in school this well or have you had more english class over the time, maybe when you wanted to be a touring musician? I am Hungarian and I love english, and I learned it a lot but I am not nearly as good as you.

Tamás Piri-Cser

INSEL - I find I struggle the most with the final rhythm strumming exercise - but am going to try to focus on the technique you shared with getting the hand off the bridge - thanks!

John H

Thanks for helping out Christophe, that is the exact one I would have suggested! :)

Bernd Brodträger

Hi Chris, i will check that out! Thank you for your time.

Davens Michael

I value all your play along videos <3 makes practice less dreadful

Hayati Nadir

Hi, I also love this video from Guthrie. Lesson #90 june 2020 "unlocking your wrist" from Bernth is a good start!

Christophe

Hi Bernth, is there a possibility that you can teach us fast strum that Guthrie Govan usually do like this one. https://youtu.be/mMPfYYE5CBE

Davens Michael

Eric Bailey

Gelgel

Great content as always...very happy I signed up \m/

Ted ONeill

I'll incorporate these exercises for my lunch break practice session, I'm finding several smaller sessions per day is working well, one in the morning, one during lunch and one when I get home....

James Ghormley

Awesome! Already added to my daily routine! :D.

Mr. D

INSEL! :)

Jimmy Grieve

Tasty exercises and uncomfortable truths! </3 :'D I will add these to my daily routine for sure!

Robert Bjärmyr

Donauinsel! I love funk and I love metal. But as you mentioned, I'm not used to play without laying down my picking hand on the bridge. I also struggle with muting the strings with my fretting hand. Definitely good exercises !

Daniel Lager

This lesson gets down. It's super rad. And hells yes, I'm all about playing funk

John Nelson

Hey Bernth! Pls, teach us about your videos intro!! It sounds amazing!
