#179 - Why You DON'T Get Better at Guitar (fix these 4 mistakes!)

Since you're all currently busy with the sweep picking challenge course from earlier this week, I thought it's the perfect chance to talk about how to actually practice guitar!

These 4 strategies really help with getting the most amount of value out of your sessions. We sadly all can't practice 24 hours each day, some of us even have less than an hour to work on all the exercises we're discussing weekly.

So it's about time to talk about how you can get the most out of your daily workouts! A deeply focused 20-minute session can bring better results than an unstructured 3-hour session with tons of breaks and distractions.

In case you're interested, I also added my personal routine below! It's constantly changing but I found myself following this system for a while now and thought you might like to try it out yourself :) I'm enjoying these longer sessions and alternate picking is still my main focus (since I need it the most).

For all beginners and new members: I also mentioned 3 starter workouts in this video, in case you're completely new to all this! Here are the links to these lessons.

Have fun practicing my friends!

It definitely helps :) Going for distortion is also important though, with material where you aim to use distortion - this will help with identifying string muting difficulties!

Bernd Brodträger

Do i have to practice without Distortion?

Damnati

Thanks bernth. The trick is to use google and not safari on iPad. Google recognizes the gp5 files and safari does not. Yep still learning in both dimensions 😉

Thanks for letting me know! I added Dropbox links to the original posts of the lessons now :)

Bernd Brodträger

Is there a gmail drop site for getting th3 referenced files for excercises numbers38 70 & 32? I cannot seem to pull the gp5 down. Thanks.

Darkboar

Thanks so much for helping out, Robert!! Welcome Nicholas - I really like switching between different workouts and just set parameters like the ones described in the PDF! One alternate picking workout that is a constant element of the routine though is this one: https://www.patreon.com/posts/104-best-5-for-39665710 For sweep picking, the current challenge and 30-day course is a great way to start: https://www.patreon.com/posts/178-best-5-sweep-53365055 Hope this helps at the beginning, greetings to LA :)

I really enjoyed 'Atomic Habits' by James Clear and 'Deep Work' by Cal Newport :) The 'Compound Effect' book is also a great choice when it comes to small results adding up over time!

Bernd Brodträger

I think Bill Evans, the great jazz pianist summed it up nicely “enjoy the process”

Robert Eckert

In my humble opinion; Don't go for the exercises you enjoy the most - but the ones that you dislike or cannot do. They're the ones you really need to practice on. :)

Robert Bjärmyr

There are three links in the description above. :)

I definitely agree on this. I use a playlist method for the playalongs and it has the same effect. 👌

Robert Bjärmyr

Hey Bernth, what was those few books that your recommended some time ago? I remember one being the Compound Effect, but what were the others?

Lauri Laurila

Hey Berth, Greetings from Los Angeles! I just joined today and I'm eager to get started. I saw your pdf. file in the description of the video and I would like to know where I would be able to find those exercises? should I just search around the Patreon community to find certain alternate pick or sweeping exercises I enjoy the most?

At this time I am capable of delivering an exercise tip as well, for I have finally something worthy of sharing with this exclusive community! Practice without pants. Can't tell you why, because i don't have a clue, but it works. (temperatures here might be related) Honestly tho, there are a lot of things that makes practicing "less annoying" E.g. I have all my workouts in one big DAW session, and did a lot of automation within that one. backing tracks obviously, but also sound presets, tempos, cues, etc. and even lighting (that hue stuff) Not kidding, removing the unnecessary annoyances of practicing *really* gives you the most practice for time invested. Helps concentrating on what actually matters right now in terms of practicing

I need my phone while practising because I use it to play backing tracks etc. on my bluetooth amp. So what I did a while ago is downloading all my practise material and simply activating flight mode while I practise.

Structuring new playlists and workouts can be done during "offtime" as well, for instance during lunch break or when you don't have the guitar. Win-win. :)

Robert Bjärmyr

One thing I have done (good or bad) is to create a few playlists with play-alongs that I've divided in days with different exercises in each playlist. They all contain the blocks I'm currently focusing on, but to avoid simply "learning that shape" I'm using different exercises in each playlist for each block. Kind of like "leg day", "chest day" when at the gym, except I'm rotating them round-robin so it's not always the same exercises on the same day etc. The only thing that is constant is the warm up and the current challenge. For me, this has helped immensely and keeps me on my toes. :)

Robert Bjärmyr

Nice, I need structured practice ideas like these. keeps me focused.,..thanks!!

bryscorpio

Great exercises for warming up..I am creating a notebook to track these so I can follow a path...

Having a structured practice regimen has mad my playing Improve massive my speed is coming and the economy of motion my fingers stay tight even when I’m just having a jam Big ups Bernth

think we all have the same problem. progress is not fast enough😃🙃😃

I feel attacked lol But in all seriousness, very awesome video! I certainly still suffer from being constantly unmotivated due to not seeing the improvements that I want. I'm currently trying to find a practice routine to stick with, but as of now, I just try to find something and work on that for an hour. For example, recently I chose the 3rd interval scale pattern from a previous video of yours and spent an hour working on the ascending and descending pattern to try and play that consistently at the suggested 50 bpm. Still not there with the descending pattern, but I know I'm slowly getting it down! :D I also love your 30 day courses, but I will admit, I feel a bit overwhelmed with them all. Should I perhaps just pick one and stick with that, then move onto another? And great movie choice btw!! XD Nightmare on Elm Street is a favorite!!

Joshiro Joestar

again a very helpful video. I urgently have to get rid of the TV to leave it on. i practice just like you bernth at 4.30 in the morning because i have 3 children and they don't let me practice in peace

Sehr gut 👍

Yeah don't get distracted by other things, like when I'm working and I drop what I'm doing to watch this new Bernth video about how to practice guitar better :-)

Dominic Vermeulen-Smith

I'm all about nuroplaticity and neuroscience, so you keep talking about the good stuff, bruh. I'm all in. I can't understand how people watch movies whilst playing guitar. It's like watching a movie whilst listening to music and then add the extra component of your fingers making the music happening.
