#178 - Best 5-Minute Sweep Picking Workout (+30 DAY CHALLENGE)

Today is a BIG DAY! You voted for it, you get it :) I put together a killer sweeping workout AND a complete 30-day sweep picking course in case you finally want to master this amazing technique: https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1qNzicnpNc2LFd_0IdwNC99dt5AILxhFk?usp=sharing

The 30-day course starts out with beginner exercises and gradually moves to more difficult workouts after 5 days. In the end, the main goal is to play the workout challenge from the video above :) It's quite tricky, please give it some time!

You can find all your exercise video play-alongs, instructional videos, backing tracks, and PDF tab sheets in the Google Drive folder I made for you!

Hope you have fun with this package - another one on legato is coming at the end of the month, let's wait a while so you can work on your sweeping skills until then :)

In case Google Drive doesn't work out for you, here's a Dropbox link for the package: https://www.dropbox.com/sh/dbl4khrleeg1kde/AAATvoLeSJPU7MbByJmc8sova?dl=0

#178 - Best 5-Minute Sweep Picking Workout (+30 DAY CHALLENGE)

Comments

I don't have the fingers to play this :P

Ricardo Rodríguez

I guess honestly not everyone can learn this technique. Also not everyone can learn to sign. It doesn’t matter how much and long you practice it. If you are one of the lucky guys which can sweep you will learn it easy under 2 months in high speed

Peter Grave

use a clean setting, maybe use a fret wrap to kill some of the unwanted string buzz.

Dennis Mollan

Hey there, yes Bernth recommends pushing the tempo if you feel underwhelmed - he's giving student feedback to videos over in the VIP Facebook group in case you ever feel stuck and need help :) Hope that helps, Team Bernth

Bernd Brodträger

Hi Berth - great stuff so far! In the picking masterclass should we be increasing BPM as we get more proficient (all are set at 50)?

Sean Deson

I play through a JVM410H and my problem is the noise. When my hand touch the first strings just a bit it drowning out the upper tones. What can I or should I do?

Peter Grave

Tried everything I could but just not able to stop unwanted noise while descending in challenge workout.. even if I'm aware of index finger muting.. this is so frustrating!!

nickk

use the side of your hand to mute strings when going to higher notes and use index finger from left hand to mute strings when going to lower notes

Bernth - I'm a huge fan of your lessons. They've really upped my game. Working on sweep picking . . . as I play major/minor arpeggios coming towards the low E from the high E, I notice my pinky traveling up and over, almost like a sea monster coming out of the ocean. I know this can't be good. I've done your pinky "fly away" lesson and I can do it well, but I'm not sure how to "untrain" it on these descending patterns.

Chris Godlewski

hi bernth im new here from philippines..this exercise is really helpfull for me thank you

Cj47

I've just recently overcome this same problem - for some reason I could sweep down but not up. Some helpful advice I got was to reduce the picking resistance - one way to do it is to angle the pick slightly against the string, this way there is less friction between the physical pick. also, reducing the exposed amount of pick helped too - also a surface area problem. beyond that, it took many many hours of working really slowly and fighting the picking impulse untilI stopped doing it unconsciously

Nick Peth

any recommendations on how to fix that ''bouncy'' picking hand? It is really difficult for me to break that habit of picking each individual note. although I have sped up a lot i find that it is holding back my speed and my right hand isnt letting the pick "sweep" across the strings. Thanks again! I'm glad I joined! \m/

Rich Gormley

Hello! I'm new here, so I hope just jumping in like this is ok. I've had that problem myself. I practiced lifting the fretting finger after picking the note, but resting it on the string to keep it muted. So you never fully lift your finger off the string. A combination of that and palm muting helped.

David L Duggins

Do you have a recommendation to avoid notes ringing as you move to the next string as you sweep?

Bernd Brodträger

Hi Bernth, just starting with day 1 to 5 and I have a question please. In Ex 1 it looks like your index finger is fretting the 8th fret on the D string immediately after you play the 10th fret. It then looks like you're waiting to the last second to move the index finger to play 7th fret on the high E. Is there a reason for this? Looks like you're doing something similar in Ex 3.

Cheers Bernth! I’ll run through the 30 days at the speed you have them at and see where I’m at then so. It’s actually quite hypnotic which I like! I’m working on this and the 30 day sweep picking course at the same time. Enjoying it 🤘🏼

Lukezo

Great question! I think it helps to develop good technique by practicing slow - but speeding things up is great for testing your limits and breaking out of the comfort zone :) The guitar pro files are great for that, I think it would be a good idea to speed things up at the end of the routine to see where you're currently at!

Bernd Brodträger

I'm pissed off with my legato technique so I'm doing the 30 course from the start. Just done the first five days. I have a question: Should I be practicing it fast tempos than in the videos? So far I've just been running through the video and trying to get it nice and consistent and clean at the recorded tempo. Cheers!

Lukezo

Indeed, standing posture tips is a good idea for voting! Well, I'm not Metallica low on the guitar. My strumming hand is over my belly button. I found that allowing the thumb to go near the top of the neck helps with the fatigue. I'm cleanly hitting 80 BPM standing.

Arcanist Bear

How low do you have your guitar? :) Standing/performing is a great topic, I'd love to do a video on it, I can put it on the next lesson voting!

Bernd Brodträger

I've been at it for 2 months now, but I have a new challenge! Playing while standing! My thumb gets exhausted quickly... do you have tips for sweep picking while standing?

Arcanist Bear

Hey Nick, yes I think pushing yourself is incredibly important - I tried to summarize my personal approach to building speed here: https://www.patreon.com/posts/167-extreme-in-5-50839230 This one is not about sweep picking but I think the system applies to any technique :)

Bernd Brodträger

Hi, Bernth. Should I try to stick with increasing by 10 bpm increments even if I am failing badly? Do you recommend or discourage using a metronome that gradually increases the increments?

Nick C

12/6/21 - 70BPM

Dean Karasinski

Thanks for asking! You don't want to rely on palm muting exclusively, you also want to be able to play arpeggios fast without that muted sound. I went over the most important technique factors to avoid string noise here: https://www.patreon.com/posts/202-10-life-59095578

Bernd Brodträger

Hey Bernth, how do you stop the low A string from ringing when I play the A note (10 fret on B string) as I sweep down the strings? It's impossible for my fretting fingers to reach there as they are concentrated on the sweep. Should we be palm muting? I don't think you mentioned that in your video... :)

Arcanist Bear

you're alternate picking this at 180!?

Seth

nov 10, stuck on 180. What's hard is telling myself not to alternate pick after doing about 20 days of the alternate picking workouts. I am seeing a noticeable improvement in all my playing though.

Thank you for making this. I was able to go from zero sweep to 150+BPM with the day one practice within about an hour. You know what the key was for me? Resting. I've always just done my reps with no break. Putting in a 1 or 2 measure break made such a difference. Lets me take time to breathe, reset my hands and mind.

Jarad Olson

10 days in, can do 60 bpm solid.

J H

10/23/21 only little unserious attempts at sweep picking til now. 70BPM is where i fall apart. I like the sweep+hammer/pulloff and odd alternate pick opportunity in this lick that makes the sweep feel like it has a home instead of just awkwardly sweeping for sweeping's sake

LiquidWhisp3r

Day 1, no chance at all. Now 6 days in and can do 40 bpm. No serious sweep picking practice before this. Doing the course.

J H

My tracking comment disappeared so I'm starting a new one (after getting stuck on 90 bpm for a week I added the day21-25 block to my routine plus https://www.patreon.com/posts/38-finger-you-do-30853257) 100bpm 21 Okt (although a bit sloppy still) 100bpm 27 Okt less sloppy

Edwin van Slingerlandt

I included the day 21-25 exercise in my routine and it worked wonders. Also, try adding exercise 1 of #38. That one helps heaps as well

Edwin van Slingerlandt

Daniel Roberts

There could be quite some truth in your words, thank you. And yep... recording an album always... is a hard task (And I did 3 of them) in terms of how many times it takes to get a good and tight as possible result. Don't know how others do... but of course you just see the good results on YT etc. so at least it SEEMS they don't have such a hard time. Dunno. Not being too critical is one of my main problems overall (not just while playing guitar xD) problem is often when practicing I am thinking too much which is distracting my playing... well... never give up is indeed a good starting point anyhow ;) Good luck and fun to you, too!

Sephiroth

I hear you. I do wish there was an easier way to comparing my playing with others in a video/youtube format here. You might not be seeing many comments coz others have given up, and you are still at it. And that's the main thing I guess. For accuracy, I have been trying to record myself (both audio and video) one day a week on not simply an exercise, but incorporating part of the exercise in my own phrase or solo. You can find some examples on my instagram (I am not posting here to get followers but to just share my experience). It takes me hours and in some cases nearly 50 takes to get a video right and an accurate solo. I feel this has really helped in improve my overall playing. Also, try not to be too critical of yourself and don't constantly compare yourself to someone else's playing. Keep at it and don't give up mate. Speed and accuracy isn't everything :) Good luck

Bhushan NN

Sep 21, 2021. Still max 80 bpm clean. trying to follow at higher speeds but not there yet. Sep 22: now @90 bpm. Sep 23: @90 max/ Sep 25 @100 bpm Sep 28 @ 90 Oct 1. 100 (needs some cleaning). Oct 2 @90 clean.

F. Javier Arze

Phew.... I started sweeping aobut a year ago (with your sweep picking master class) and practiced about 15-20 minutes each monday to friday my sweeping skills. From time to time on sundays, too. And I am doing this exercise here now roughly since the day you uploaded it. With trying my best on the final workout itself. Still I am absolutly not able to get a clean sound when hitting the 100 bpm mark. Of course getting worse up to 120 (where I am about totally lost in track depending on the day) But than again you are saying there are some student of yours that reached that final goal in between just the 30 days... even if they didn't have a lot of experience in sweeping... I don't get it... I don't even constantly getting a mistakefree run on just one speed messure even starting from 30 bpm. What am I doing wrong? Seriously... I mean... I know or think that is, that at least accuracy wise I hit my limit quite some time ago... it won't get any better nevermind how much time I dedicate into practicing... But I don't read any comments here that sound like someone is experiencing likewise... but I can't be the only one can I?

Sephiroth

About 7 days in. Stuck at 70 bpm. Not clean, but improving.

Dave Mrugalski

Thanks Bernth! I was indeed neglecting my picking hand for muting, but still find it difficult to mute every vibrating string :) I would love a video on the topic!

Edwin van Slingerlandt

Thanks for asking about that Edwin! I'd love to do a video on muting, I'll suggest it on the next lesson voting :) Working with your picking hand for slight palm muting is a quick fix but you don't always want muted notes - so I'd love to explore more approaches in a lesson!

Bernd Brodträger

I am working on my note separation and noticed that it's a lot harder to mute a note if it's in a position where a natural harmonic occurs (5rth and 7th frets mainly but also 4th etc) I don;t want to use a string dampener though. Any tips on how to practice my separation in those pesky positions?

Edwin van Slingerlandt

Sept 1 - 80 (still not clean) able to ghost most at 90 and 100, any faster than that my fingers just stare at me. Sept 3 still 80 max, a bit cleaner. Sep 24 still at 80 bpm. Sep 29 @90 bpm Sep 30 90 still.

F. Javier Arze

Hey Adam, this recent workout really helps: https://www.patreon.com/posts/182-best-finger-53895697 And this one is great for economy of motion in general: https://www.patreon.com/posts/161-this-is-why-49190212 Hope this helps :)

Bernd Brodträger

hey Jose, any advice you have for keeping your pinky close to the fretboard? Any links you can share would be extremely helpful. Thanks!

Adam Cain

Aug 16 - 80 ohh) Aug 26 - 100 x_x fingers get tangled 90-100, 80 normal) Sept 09 - 90 normal =)

SuperBigBang SBB Hell Rain

July 15 - 90 July 17 - 90 July 20 - 90 July 22 - 90... ... Aug 11 - 110-120, now I feel more comfortable reaching 100,I can hit the notes more precisely and my pinky finger is no longer flying around, I can feel more control over movement. I'm on the final block of the course, so I hope to reach that 120 cleaner and more accurate.

José Iván Aguilar

Just looked back at my day 1 attempt at 100 bpm... It was more "weep picking" than sweep picking, haha! :'D

Robert Bjärmyr

The augmented scale found in "day 6-10" has a two finger rolling in it, which is quite helpful to practice :)

Robert Bjärmyr

Day 20: 100 bpm + sloppy 110. At this stage I'm quite confident playing this challenge at 90 without warming up too much, but to get past 90 I need to run through my entire practice routine more or less first. I'm not sure why, since I'm more fatigued at the end of the session but still perform sweeping better/faster. It's really weird. :D Sweeping lesson #143 at 120 bpm is feeling quite natural too, which is very nice! :)

Robert Bjärmyr

thankss, lessons about rolling finger arpeggios would be awesome too :D

Richard Amarante

Day 16: Finally left the land of 90 and got to 100 bpm! It needs cleaning up, but after being stuck at 90 bpm for 8 practice days I'll take any victory I get, haha! :) Tip: You can practice sweeping to lesson #143! Sounds and feels great, and if you're like me and struggle slightly with the interval changes in this challenge - playing #143 with sweeping will probably give you a confidence boost. :)

Robert Bjärmyr

30th July still 100bpm but a little cleaner ;)

Ray Gardner

If anyone needs to feel better - cant get past 90bpm. Once I get to that speed - Pinky comes flying off the top rope! Its all over the place!

Cory Duncan

27th july 100bpm then the wheels fall off lol ... Getting there

Ray Gardner

Makes sense. I just keep playing it faster... focus on playing clearly and may miss a transition...just have to keep at it :)

Ben Gilsdorf

Awesome Ben, thanks for sharing! That's great for such a short time of playing - it took me much longer to master the basics :) As you keep practicing, you will internalize the shapes and motions and it will take much less effort to focus - this is very normal when you're starting out with something new. Getting it into your muscle memory will really help!

Bernd Brodträger

I've never really sweep picked before and have only been playing guitar for a year...but I'm sitting @ 70 bpm comfortably after the 30 day intro course. I keep finding that my largest issue is that I keep zoning out and forgetting what I'm supposed to be playing....like I should be transitioning but I'm not? Anyone else have this issue?

Ben Gilsdorf

Day 13: Still at 90 Feels like I've reached a plateu here, since I can't get past 90 this last week. Not sure how to overcome but I believe my main culprits are left+right hand syncronization and the pinky hammer-on. Taking a week vacation now and hopefully get better result once I'm rested. :)

Robert Bjärmyr

23rd July still on 90bpm needs to be cleaner

Ray Gardner

July 15 - 90 July 17 - 90 July 20 - 90 July 22 - 90, still need more practice

José Iván Aguilar

July 15 - 90 July 17 - 90, 100 sounds poor yet, need to work more on the exercises July 20 - 90, I need to work more on finger control, and the tension of my hand

José Iván Aguilar

Thanks for asking, Robert! I did not hear of this one yet :) I always work with a Jazz III size pick! Usually, it's this one because of the grip surface: https://www.thomann.de/at/dunlop_nylon_max_grip_jazz_iii_carbon.htm

Bernd Brodträger

July 19th GMT day 3, 80bpm is starting to sound really good, but can't quite get it at 90bpm just yet!

Crenando

19th July 90bpm not clean yet

Ray Gardner

@Bernth; Have you seen or tried the special "stylus pick" for practicing a lighter pick attack? If so, would you recommend practicing with my regular pick instead, or getting a "stylus" as well?

Robert Bjärmyr

Day 9: 80 under control, 90 ok. A positive side-effect is that I find myself adding in small sweeps in between segments of other exercises (like #143, #155), which feels pretty cool. And of course, looking back just a week at my older recordings of sweeps shows a night and day difference... If only I'd been practicing this vigilantly last year instead of binging Netflix... :')

Robert Bjärmyr

July 15 - 90 July 17 - 90, 100 sounds poor yet, need to work more on the exercises

José Iván Aguilar

16th July 90bpm not super clean

Ray Gardner

About 80 BPM for the 1st day.

Jonathan Moran

Starting! Day 1!!

Jonathan Moran

July 16th GMT, 50 bpm very crisp, 60bpm acceptable but not consistent

Crenando

That 19th note hammer-on on the A-string is pretty challenging to hit cleanly though....

Robert Bjärmyr

Day 6: Pretty decent at 70, ok at 80. Weird thing is - I can tag along pretty nicely to the other sweep exercises at higher speeds, but this particular exercise, fret location and mix of note lengths confuses my poor brain... :D That said, and to quote the guy above: I'M SWEEPING! :'D This is one of the techniques I've never even tried to do after being discouraged as a kid, and simply believed that others had better genetics for it. Yey!

Robert Bjärmyr

July 16th, 80bpm clean ..

Ray Gardner

July 15 - 90 So far, reached 110 but its not clean.

José Iván Aguilar

Day 4 , 14th July 80bpm

Ray Gardner

Awesome, thanks so much for sharing this Martin!! Happy this helps :)

Bernd Brodträger

I’m much better at this challenge than the alternate picking one. I can get through this pretty easily with not much gaffing. Now to get it so that every note has the same timbre and definition… Great exercise!

Sam Brox

Thx, this is going to be a nice ride. Still 5 more days of the previous challenge to go. Which has been lot of fun to practise.

Lauri Laurila

I'M SWEEP PICKING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!, This is one of those techniques that I always wanted to learn, but never understood, so figured it was just for the more gifted/talented/players with more practice time. But I'm actually doing it! not fast at 80 bpm, but hey, its a start. Now, just need my fretting hand to keep up and figure out palm muting and we are on the road! Cheers Bernth

Martin Bonsall

I think I've narrowed it down to a conflict in my brain between "solo" and "strumming" mode. I simply go on auto-pilot and start picking the notes because it's easier for me, but this of course need to be remedied if I want to learn to sweep. :)

Robert Bjärmyr

GP5 = Guitar Pro-file. You need either that or TuxGuitar. PDF = Good old pdf. You can read this in your browser most of the time, otherwise Adobe Reader is free. The excercises are available in the Google Drive and Dropbox links above. I suggest these, since they have play-along videos etc.

Robert Bjärmyr

how do I open up the 30 day challenges

Tim Tukapua

That's why you are my only guitar teacher 😉 after holiday I will try this challenge.

Thrusher

Thank You. I'm on it!

Eddy Mora

I will take this challenge !! Thanks for posting such great videos !

Adrian Nechiti

Thanks. The only problem I face is not to overpractice to rpotect my arm from hurt!

Сергей Петров

I've recorded myself doing "sweeps" at 60... and my hand is bouncing all over the place. :( I even looked at it during play to think of/and make sure I'm sweeping, but apparently I more or less pick every note anyway.... Seems to me I get stuck between the strings, so I'm guessing I'm digging too deep. But in my mind it feels like any less pick and my fingers will touch the strings instead. Any tips on reducing the bounce?

Robert Bjärmyr

This sounds fun. Thanks for the daily challege.

Alan

This is awesome Bernth, I can't wait to get started!

Christian Liliedahl

I do the exact same. No peeking before the current chunk is fully done.

Lauri Laurila

2021-07-07: Testrun at 60. My right hand is Bouncy McBounceface. ... 2021-07-10 (day 1): 60 bpm, can go faster but then I start picking. 2021-07-11: 70 bpm, decent control of lower tempos.

Robert Bjärmyr

hahahahah he does sound like that

myrick jr

I love that the days are separated in chunks and thus I can look at only the excercises for the current chunk, and the next set of excercises is a mystery... Kinda like the next episode of a great TV show. Something to look forward to etc... So, is anyone else just like me....or is it just me? 😂

Robert Bjärmyr

Ive known where Bernth is from for a while, but for the first time while listening to videos tonite it hit me. HOLY CRAP, he has the same accent as the Terminator! too cool haha

bryscorpio

July 6 ~ 80 bpm

Emmett Anderson

I love the practical nature of your videos and your humor too. This particular topic has been the bane of my playing so I especially apricate this one! Thanks for all you do!

Aaron Doering

Im in the same boat. I am so excited for this challenge and sweeping is something I never thought I would be able to do. Of course i can cant do it lightning quick yet but im starting to get a hang of it. Slow at first and slowly build up speed

Edward Knapp

So excited to get started tonite on this. MY first try at lesson learning and real training. I cant wait. It's super cool that you have it broken down all the way to the start. I see you doing it and Im like nope, i cant do that...but I watch the first week of videos and I know I can do that stuff and I will build on it from there...

bryscorpio

Hey Bernth, I watched the one video where you showed yourself playing from 2017 and the difference in your playing ability from then to now and it gave me hope to keep trying since that was a big difference in the four years that you were practicing. I know you’ve been doing this for a long time and I’ve only been playing for about two years. I have been stuck lately and stopped playing for a while because I have so many training courses that I am just overwhelmed with the amount of training materials and I don’t know where to put most of my time practicing. I purchased the guitar mastery method courses, the Steve Stine courses, the Justin guitar courses these simply guitar courses and I also purchased your 10 week sweep picking course but it was too hard and I’m going to try this one that you just listed on Patreon. My biggest problem is not knowing where to spend my time. Do I learn all the fretboard notes first or practice all the scale positions or learn the chords or just have fun and play songs? I started playing right at the beginning of the pandemic so I couldn’t take lessons that would give me more structure so I bought all these different online courses and I have learned a lot. It really made me feel better watching how much better you got in the last four years even after you’ve been playing all these years. I’m going to spend a lot of time on your sweep picking challenge to see if I can do at this time. Your videos are very informative and really help out. Thank you.

Gregg Sheridan

😳

SrDesck

Hot damn yes! I have no idea how to sweep pick and I'm SO EXCITED to see another 30 day set of lessons for this one. I have been following the 30 day alternate picking one for speed, and while I'm not necessarily much faster yet, I see improvement in terms of clarity and just building the muscle memory, hand synchronization and getting a better feel for the timing. I absolutely can't wait to start Day 1 of this! 🥳 Thanks Bernth!

Eric Bailey

I already downloaded all is about 500 mb

Vincenzo

I hate study and run for it, that's why I stopped study 15 years ago I'll try to not do the same, now I will combine them together, as I deeply follow the lessons 163 I'm really improved my sweep picking technic, but this lesson it's a great workout for my hands and brain, I hope the 10 steps cours is lifetime 😅😅😅

Vincenzo

Both dive into sweep picking, that's correct :) The chapters in 10 steps are more about composition and creativity, this is a great starting point for technique and building the motion from scratch!

Bernd Brodträger

Like any challenge, it's optional and can be done at any time. :) Personally, I have a roughly 2 hour practice routine everyday which includes last month's challenge (and now this) along with the necessary exercises. My routine includes all "blocks" I think I need to improve on, not just for the challenge. If you're talking about the "ten weeks of sweeping" course, I haven't started that one so I can't give any advice there. :)

Robert Bjärmyr

I attached a Dropbox link as well in case Google Drive is causing problems! We crashed Dropbox with the last course (too many shares/downloads outside of Patreon) - please make sure not to share it, I made this just for you guys and girls :) Thanks so much!

Bernd Brodträger
