#173 - 4 MIN Shred Challenge to 200BPM (4 WEEK RESULTS)
Added 2021-06-08 14:00:06 +0000 UTC
Time for something REALLY special: before we get to this month's wishlist topics, I want to challenge you. This play-along workout video is about pushing your alternate picking technique to the next level - all the way up to 200BPM!
Here are the files for this challenge (but wait, there's more coming below): https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1im1Bui8pfSw_DDOfdRzMHVV9gbADpXHc?usp=sharing
AND I listened to all new (and also veteran) members that asked for a structured learning path on Patreon: I put together an easy-to-follow practice routine out of the best current picking workouts that will help you with mastering this challenge.
This 30-Day Picking Workout starts very easy (beginner-friendly!) and gets more challenging after each block of 5 days: https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1o3-T_TRWToBIXQBa-P50MaMi9IvJNNM_?usp=sharing
Please let me know how you like the workout, I'd love to do this more often for different techniques if this helps you :) Have an amazing day my friends!
I just joined so that's why I'm 5 months late. There are videos for every lesson. He is alt picking everything I've seen in this 30 day challenge. Hope that helps.

Hey there, my name is Oli and I'm in charge of customer support here :) Thanks for the great question! Bernth is still very active in the secret Facebook group for VIP/Platinum members and answers questions like this every day over there, as well as giving helpful feedback to student videos! :)
Extending this to comments on all posts and hundreds of daily messages is sadly not possible anymore with around 9000 active members. So if you'd like to be in touch with Bernth directly, just chose either the VIP or Platinum membership and you will get access to the Facebook group right away!
Hope this helps, have a great day!

(Using terminology from Troy Grady's Cracking the Code.)
Is it just me, or do these exercises require a double-escape pick-stroke? For example, consider Exercise 3 in Day 1-6. This is a 3-notes-per-string pattern, skipping strings. The skip and the notation tells me this is pure alternate picking (can't use sweeping, hammer-ons, or pull-offs). Neither upstroke escape or downstroke escape will work on their own. Maybe I'm supposed to be practicing fast changes between upstroke and downstroke escaping? If not, then I can only assume I'm supposed to practice a double-escape pick-stroke technique.

Hi! New Patreon member form Argentina here! There is any specific video on how to hold the pick? I thing I'm holding it wrong, or at least doesn't feel natural to me.

Hi, I just noticed in exercise #3 that your left hand fingering looks like index/middle/ring or index/middle/pinky, -and not index/ring/pinky across the first five strings of the neck, which is what feels natural to me. Do you have any recommendations on left hand fingering?

20/1/23: Starting at 80bpm. Been playing for over 20 years. No shame. Time to knuckle down and do this properly.
21/1/23:: 100bpm a couple of times through before my left hand gives in.
22/1/23: 110bpm once.
24/1/23: 130 up to 150. My forearm burns.
29/1/23: I can do 160 but its got some sloppy bits. Feels like its more about getting into the rhythm at the higher speeds.
04/2/23: 180. Could be a bit cleaner, especially getting clear notes every time on my ring finger. Will work on building the strength more there before I reckon I can move past this plateau.
15/2/26: My finger strength in the third and fourth finger is definitely improving. I've been noodling away like crazy but I slowed right down and focused on getting clear notes and proper contact. Im surprised at how weak that action was considering how long I've been playing. Now I can technically do this a few times at 200bpm but I'll use the last couple of days of the challenge to really try clean it up and get it consistent. It won't stop here and this has been a great journey. I've really pulled apart my technique in so many ways throughout and feel like I'm learning how to do a lot of things over again except properly this time. The forearm burn has even started to feel good, dare I say it.

Hello guys, new member here
Quick question, how do you guys evolve the metronome speed throughout the course? For example, on week 1, should I increase the metronome each day only, or every time I feel I can speed up the exercise? If you guys could share your thoughts on that, or point to some video that already explains it, it would be great. Thanks!

Day1 (1November 2022) at the start even cannot play warm up
Today is the Day 2 and sometimes I reach 120 bpm with some mistakes but sometimes it is clear...also doing another picking challenge)....look forward next day..
Day 3.... finally can play 120 bpm after warm up,,,trying to beat 130bpm
Day 4 .... I finally beat 130 bpm with no mistakes after warm up!!
Day5 ... still on 130 bpm, but lower tempos are easier for me!! Btw harder for me is playing 578 578 578 than 875 875 875
Day6....keep practising, I hope at the end of this challenge, minimal 150 bpm will be totaly clear :D
Day7....maximum is 140 bpm after warm up
Day8 of practising....still stuck on 140 bpm but lower tempos are clearer and easier to play

The new picking style is thumb pointing down and pressing lightly against the pick. It worked for me as i can feel each note articulated nicely and cleanly even at high-speed runs.

First Day 13/09: 160BPM
I have recently changed the way I hold the pick (and picking in general) because I felt I could not do much and I did not had the needed precision. It ifelt like I unlocked a new magic skill that turned my playing upside down.

Moin :-)
I'm on day 13 of my shredding journey and I thought I'd join the conversation here with some great news:
I feel like I've achieved a minor milestone in my progress today. Woohoo!! :-D
The Shred Challenge is way beyond my skills, so I'm working through the 30-day picking workout; usually practice (practise ?) about 1 hour per day, more on the weekend. For 5 days now, I just about managed to keep up with the play-along video for Day 11-15 / Lick 3 @ 70 bpm - but after a few runs, my fretting hand got tired and I felt some kind of fatigue in the palm, near the root of the pinkie and my playing got really slow and sloppy and unclean. Ever playing Day 11-15 / Lick 3 @ 90 bpm seemed completely hopeless.
Don't really know what happened today and it's kind hard to explain, but I think I switched from picking individual notes to "scrubbing" - and by that I mean playing like you would pick a base string in some fast thrash metal rhythm piece, only you play not a base, but the b and e strings (for that lick). Compared to before, there's much much less movement in the picking hand.
Makes a major difference (at least to me): I can now easily play @ 70 bpm, 90 bpm now seem really doable; for some reason, my fretting hand doesn't tire anymore and I can play the lick in a loop for much much longer than before; 95% clean.
OK, maybe I'm preaching to the choir here and everyone already knows that - and _maybe_ this is what "economy picking" actually means, but to me, this really is some important learning and I'm happy about my progress :-)
Happy practicing everyone! :-)
Cheers from Hamburg / Germany,
Stefan

Day 2 - 8/16/22 - 120 (I modified your exercise to help with my coordination issues and it is more constant without any rests in between. Its slightly more difficult but also slightly more rewarding because once you nail it it really sounds smooth and almost hypnotic.) Hello Bernth! On the 30 day course is there a goal BMP i should aim for on each exercise? Is there a speed at witch I should be able to play the exercises before I move on to the next block (Im on block 2 and I can play the exercises at about 100+ BPM)?

Hey Edwin, if you got all exercises under your fingers already, you can definitely cycle through them :) I think it always helps to get familiar with each one first (maybe day 1, 2 and 3) and then working on all of them at the end of each block!

If I were to spend 30 minutes on these, would you recommend splitting my time over all 5 exercises in a block each day, so playing each roughly 3 times, or would you recommend alternating between say 1-3 and 4-5?
I'm mixing in this one with my ongoing journey on the legato course :)

140 bpm-160 bpm today. I am learning to control my pinky because if i let it fly away on that G - there is no way to recover and keep the rhythm. was in a zone but had to stop at 170 when my hand got tight!

OK, I got lick 3 at 70bpm -- a bit shabby but it's there. Starting from 50bpm, it took me about a week of practice, around 15-20 min/day just focusing on this lick. In the end what turned out to help me more than just building the speed up gradually was actually *trying* to play with the 90bpm video. After 2 minutes of trying (and totally failing) to keep up with Bernth at 90, when I dialed back to 70, I would suddenly sound way tighter at the speed than before. This was surprising to me -- I sound really bad at 90, so I wouldn't think it was helping me in any way at all. But it really was, a lot. I was already familiar with the concept of just going as fast as possible and trying to tighten things up later, but this for me has been the clearest example of that approach working. On to lick 4...

I am in the same boat as Andrea (and Ryan, and Castulo...) -- Lick 3 is where I can't quite keep up -- so I'm glad to find this thread. Sounds like the advice is to wait until you can complete the licks at the speeds in videos until continuing on to the fourth block in the picking course. I was doing the 30 day hand sync course simultaneous with the 30 day picking course, so I think now I will refocus my energy on the hand sync course, and also add the picking working out from post #171. Other suggestions welcome. I will report back here when I can tackle Lick 3 and the rest of them :)

Thanks for sharing this, Aaron! This is quite a specific lick/technique approach and if you feel like you don't want to use it in your music at all, you can also move on if you want to :) This course is mostly about alternate picking, I just wanted to add something different to the mix with this lick as well!

Hard stuck on lick 5 (essentially day 15) in the 3rd week of the 30 day challenge, with a small sweep picking motion instead of alternate picking. Not sure if I should move on until I can at least play that at the slower speed in the video, anyone else dealing with something like this?

It really helps me to keep it in the area around the middle finger, especially at lower sections of the fretboard :) That gives me the best support for my other fingers! It will come naturally with time though and I don't think too much about it when I'm playing now - but I hope this helps!
Bernd Brodträger
2021-09-30 04:58:52 +0000 UTC
Bernth, when playing these fast lines, how should i think about the position of my fretting hand thumb? When I compare to your videos, I notice my thumb is closer to the guitar head on the lower strings and then slightly above the fretboard on the higher strings... should i focus on keeping the thumb in a particular position at all times or does it not matter as much as long as the fingers stay curled and close to the strings?
scott
2021-09-30 01:12:44 +0000 UTC
Hey Castulo, thanks for sharing this! You can definitely also move to the hand synchronization course, this one features great exercises and I'm sure that this course will be easier after completing it :) But you definitely don't have to stress yourself, the 30 days are just a guideline - if you feel like you need more time with certain exercises, that's perfectly fine :)
Bernd Brodträger
2021-09-29 05:13:14 +0000 UTC
I'm also in the same boat. I was doing just fine until I reached Lick 3, the only way I can do that cleanly is if I slow it down to 55 bpm :(
I have the same question as Andrea, I don't know if I should keep going or just stick to Lick 3 until I'm able to do it at 70 bpm, doing it at 90 bpm just seems impossible. Also, I don't know if I should pause this 30-day course here and move to the hand synchronization course. Hand synchronization seems to be what is slowing me down here. In the meantime, I'll also check the same video.

Sep 21 2021, I can now do it @180 bpm clean but struggling with higher speeds. If I start the exercise with an upstroke I can d0 it at @170 bpm. Sep 22 190 bpm. Sep 23 190 bpm still. Sep 24 now can do 200 but still not clean enough. Sep 25 200 bpm cleaner. Sep 27 200 still need cleaning. Sep 29 200 bpm! Sep 30 200 bpm Oct 2 190 is clean 200 needs work still. Oct 22 200 (yes!)

3 weeks later, I can do it at 150 clean, 180 for the up pattern, but only 160 for the down pattern ... the combined isnt stable at 160 tough
I can feel im more precise and confident with my left hand movement - which is cool !

Day 24, can do 200 bpm not completely sloppy. Started at very sloppy 160 / ok 120. (Had to take some breaks so took me closer to 30 days in real time).

Hi Bernth, I'm trying to practise with licks of third block of picking course (11-15) and while I can execute licks 1 and 2 clean enough at both of proposed tempos with licks 3 and 4 I can execute only the slower tempo and especially on lick 3 I'm not so clean and consistent following your play-along video. Can you give me some advice on how to go on to improve my skills? Is It Better to go on following the 30 day course or to continue repeating these problematic licks before to go on?

Sitting at 230-240 bpm since quite some time now. Getting more comfortable with 240... maybe I am working 250 in the next time... but still: the exact results even arount 160-200 are varying each day... I can't say I get it the same clear and good way every time. Not even on the same day I am able to be very consistent in my playing... I don't know... used to deal with that problem in my playing ever since.
And yea.. despite some saying you don't need any talent you can mostly compansate with training I think that being accurate/consistent is a thing I will never really be able to. I'm really working my ass off this since whole year now and don't see any significante change in this part.
Yep, I guess... getting rid of long years bad habbits and mistakes isn't excactly done after just a year. But hardly seeing any improvements after dedicating so much time and effort into it? I more and more think that this is my kind of limit in terms of playing guitar.

I started today to practise with the five exercises of first block of the course and following the video playalong I can execute them easily enough to focus on my hand movements. For the further 4 days of this block should I reapeat the exercises at the same tempo of the videos to gain consistency in the movements or should I raise bpm to reach my bpm limit? Thanks in advance.

Not sure if you're exaggerating, but I'd suggest taking some time off and/or avoiding the super fast tempos for a few days, just to be sure. Your hands should feel exercised after a session but never in pain.
I've had trouble with my wrists in the past due to overtraining and it took *years* until they recovered. :S
Robert Bjärmyr
2021-07-02 13:09:36 +0000 UTC
Of course, I also do a daily 1-1.5h of actual guitar practice on top of the challenge.
I usually place the challenge in the middle of my sessions nowadays, but in the beginning I placed them last. I feel that I get better results when I'm not totally fatigued (go figure... :) )
Robert Bjärmyr
2021-07-02 13:07:11 +0000 UTC
Usually once, but I often dedicate at least 15-20 minutes to the actual challenge.
My "stop signal" is when I fail to do three clean repetitions in a row.
If I felt like that the one before was a little shaky even though I "passed", I usually go back/down a step and do another pass just to clean things up.

I'm hearing you...
I put on a fresh set of strings and a new pick and it took a few days until I got comfortable and up-to-speed again. The margins are pretty small so everything matters! I really found that the "6 bad habits" picking exercise helped a lot to stabilize my alternate picking.
You could check it out as well? :)
Robert Bjärmyr
2021-06-23 05:31:47 +0000 UTC
Same, except for the bpm's! :D
The descending is like a safe zone, or calibration point. I found that when trying a new tempo the first bars can be messy and then I hit the descending lick and from there on it's downhill.
Problem is that everything restarts again after that, haha.
Hitting the ground running is one of my problem areas, but the time needed to lock in a tempo is getting shorter every day. This 30 day course+challenge has really done wonders imho. :)

I also think this one is a bit harder :) I think it mainly depends on the vocabulary you built over the years - I'm sure it's the exact opposite with some players! But that's a great revelation, maybe you want to work more on fast ascending phrases/material?
Bernd Brodträger

Fun fact:
I've started tracking my "overall status" the last weeks, to see what various things does for my playing ability. And I found it pretty interesting - even though I am having a slight cold at the moment, I still rate my playing ability better than when I had a glas of wine the day before.
I will keep track to see if it was a coincidence, but in case it is true I think I'll re-evaluate having a few beers with a gig etc... :)
Still at 130, but coming from ~90-95bpm to 130+ in under two weeks is amazing in my book. \m/

Try playing with 170 and 180 (even if it's sloppy). Then go back to 160. It will feel like slow motion. :)
I did this when I was barely making 130, had a shot at 140 and went back and managed 130 pretty cleanly.

HAHA! Now that's really cool and a bit odd. Seems we both have the same technique up to this point. As the closed hand approach really stills feels a bit awkward for me too. But as for the big (acending/decending lines) problem it kind of is an opportunity to finally fix it. I might also get away with my technique and INTENSE practice over time. But I try to still need to get all the practice in a short hour or two. Up to this point I try to switch between the picking approaches to a Jam Track. Let's see how it plays out in the end. Today I kind of have a bad day, where nothing seems to work. Just one of those days I guess XD. Again thanks for the time. And please keep me posted as I am very interested how your technique will improve. Hopefully there are some clues and tricks for me as well.

Hehe... indeed I have the same issue with ascending/descending which my guitar teacher in my early years of playing thought was a really rare problem since descending in generell should be easier since you are not working against gravity at all.
Now it seems I FINALLY got rid of that problem or at least know WHY this existed and am able to work it out...
And it seems to be just a little detail... this is: I am holding my pick not exactly parallel to the strings but tend to lean it more towards the ground. This works fine when ascending but when it comes the other way round I kind of use track of the strings.
Anyhow. Good to read you are coming along quite well too with your approach ;)
By the way... since being in this community I, too, thought I was pretty much alone with the open hand approach until I discovered a workshopvideo of Batio a few weeks ago where he was speaking about this exact topic. Funny enough I just watched a live video of my favorite band Kalmah where I saw that both guitar players are playing with an open hand, too. So well... I came to the conclusion that it IS possible to be a guitar god even with an open hand ;)
So good to know this... since I tried and tried closed hands for a few weeks now (again...) and it just feels akward to me and I am missing the same precisement...

2021-06-17 19:51:09 +0000 UTC
Hi Sephiroth! Thanks for taking the time! I am 100% with you. Of course there are a million ways to Rome. And its good to hear that there is someone, playing the same style. (I was pretty lonely with that I thought) With my picking approach I was always faster on the ascending than on the decending lines. I kind of made it my style to always ascend in straight groupings (16th) notes for example and decend in (8th)triplets. But it kind of always bothered me to not be able to play anything, and always have to compromise or rewrite something to fit the style. So my technique just brought me this far and after a few years stuck I discovered Bernth, the videos, and now the community. And as of my experience it all comes down to practice. Talent just let you learn things quicker. But I already made good progress with the closed hand approach within the 2 weeks that I am here. It just feels kind of better. Only thing was the switched fix point on the guitar, as I mentioned above. I am not always able to see Bernth`s wrist, cause the camera is directed onto the guitar, not sideways. Also I am not able to see how he switches pick positions (up on acending lines, down on decending lines?) That's why I suggested to make a Video separate for wrist and pick positioning. I am confident that I will be able to incorporate the closed finger approach to the rest of my playing abilities. Again thank you for answering. :)
Stefan Schönebeck
2021-06-17 15:28:41 +0000 UTC
So why even bother of changing your approach if it is fine right now?
I also do it like Batio all the time since I have the same problems as you mentioned with a closed hand and I don't see a problem why you shouldn't do this too if it feels right. There is no ONE right thing here. It always very much depends on mainly your body physique.
What works for Bernth or any other guitar play doesn't have to work for you too.

June 16th
So... after doing the Day 1-5 lessons for the third day now, I first tried the main exercise.
I'm at 190-200 bpm. Wasn't toooo clean in these tempos. But since I did all the way up from 90 step by step my fretting hand got a little tired in the end. With a little break also 200 bpm sounded nearly clean.
Guess this exercise works for me mainly as a little muscle build up. But I'll continue working on it. Maybe it improves my generel skills in this area further.
I wish all the other exercises, licks and techniques would work so propper for me xD but well in the end this one is a really basic one playing just on one string. At least I can do that :P

June 11 at 160 bpm, June 15th at 180, working now on 190 to sound clean. Seems that I need to work on my left hand more. If I take my left hand out of the equation by just playing the "e" on the b string, and just play the right amount of notes in the given timing I can go up to 200 bpm. As always with those lessons the biggest challenge for me is to have the courage to work on those 200bpm by not saying 180 is ok. XD Which I did too often in the past. So that's why we're all here right? So thanks Bernth for the inspiration that gets me off the couch. XD

From playing myself, and watching someone like Luke Hoskin from Protest the Hero, I really do get an impression that taps and legatos are ulimately going to be faster no matter what, but it also seems its less consistent, and does not quite have the right attack at times!

Just started on "block 2" of the exercises.
Quite a leap from the first block - I like it! :D
I'm also pretty impressed with my results so far - from not being able to play 100 bpm clean to 120 bpm in just five days. 200 bpm still looks a bit far away... but aim for the sky and reach the trees, right! ;)
I noticed that it's a night and day difference if I'm using legato instead of picking every note; in which case I can exceed 120 bpm quite easily. But I'm trying to be strict and pick every tone, use pinky and ring fingers on the fretting hand etc. \m/
Great set of exercises, Bernth! :)

That's a great question! I usually like to work in 3 'zones': very slow (with focus on timing and 'perfect' execution), at mid-tempos (this is what you need most often, around 120BPM), and fast (to push/challenge myself). So once you have the workouts memorized and it becomes easier, make sure to also challenge yourself to see further improvement :)

I honestly think that this kind of workout (and I'm talking abput the 30 day one) is the best thing ever because I was thinking about how I do not know how to structure a complete, useful but also not too long practice routine and this is really what I was searching for. I'd love to see the same kind of workouts for other technics like sweep picking, fast legato and tapping. Thank you so much Bernth, you've made my practice program much easier.

13th. 150bpm. the ascending is far easier than desending. need to work on getting that pointer finger of the 5th fret

June 12th, got 120 down pretty well and clearly. Moving onto 130 which actually doesn't seem that bad. Just want to keep it clean.

cool workout! I enjoyed to test out my speed...actually i begin to struggle with the descending one at 160bpm. I will work on this from time to time!

June 11 got to 120. 130 descending is ok but ascending needs work.

Hey Bernth.
The Problem of switching technique is not just about keeping your right Hand fingers as close together as possible, it is also about changing your fixpoint to the guitar. The art where your right hand ist connected to the guitar. The problem is : the faster I got the looser I hold the plek, the more I open up my hand and choose a fixpoint underneath the strings. (a little like Michael Angelo Batio does, but far not as good XD)
If I do change my position to „closed fingers“ I loose that fixpoint and I am now using the bridge. Which puts my wrist in an uncomfortable angle. If I try to play then, I either cramp up very quickly or, as I try to raise my wrist, loose any fixpoint on the guitar. Its nearly impossible to gain speed then. It would be great if you maybe analyze Right Hand fixpoint of your technique in more detail in upcoming videos. Would be great. All The Best!

Day two and 170 bpm is less of a mess than yesterday. 160 bmp is pretty clean. Today I played right through to 200 bpm, which I didn’t yesterday. Man, that is gonna take some work!

Thanks for helping out, Wojciech! :) The Guitar Pro files are also uploaded in the Google Drive folders I attached in the post, they're not compressed over there if this helps!

it's not a conversion, it's a compression, you need to open it with Winrar

Day 1, June 10th: 110 pretty clean. Picking feels good but my fretting hand ring finger is burning... gonna stop pushing until I can do 100 relaxed

June 9 I slopped through 110. June 10 I'd say 130 was not tensed and pretty clean now that I have a feel for the exercise.

Day 3, still on 120 but getting it. The pause in the middle is shrinking and it is all starting to just flow together. Pretty wild to be honest.

My impression of that is that you might waste extra energy holding notes you don't need. You don't have to lift the fingers completely, just "drain" the energy from them. :)

Day 1, June 10th: 160 bpm is where inconsistencies start creeping in. 170 bpm is a mess. Looking forward to the work and getting back in the groove! Awesome lesson!

I startet with the 30day challenge. This is great 👌
But I have some questions for the 100 to 200bpm challenge (which I master sometimes at 90bpm 🙈).
At the first part I let the 1st finger always automatically on the fret. Is this wrong?
At the 2nd part I put the 3rd and 4th finger together on the frets and the 1st stays also on the fret like above. Is this wrong too? It's automatically, should I change this frethand habit?
You put every finger extra on the frets. Is this better?

I'm liking how you have started to bundle your videos into these packs now, something I have been wanting for a long time. Patreon's UI is not the best for this, but I'm glad you finally took the initiative and did it yourself. Looking forward to starting this challenge :)

June 9 right at the bottom at 100. Can get a bar or two at 110 but not close to putting a full pass together. Better at descending. Not discouraged though!

Nice!
I have a feeling this will be a great exercise for me, since the warm-up speed is close to my max at the moment. Really trying to get the technique right this time around, and it seems my alternate picking and pinky coordination is ... not great, haha. :')
So: 2021-06-10: 100 bpm.
Btw -
I'd love more "ready packages" like this!
Currently I'm selecting what lessons I believe I need to practice, but I realize I'm only human and probably cherry pick my lessons for what I want instead of what I *need*. :)

June 8 2021. Okey, jumped right in...I am no shredder by any means....After getting the patterns under the fingers: 140 is "too fast". My left hand cannot sync any more, but I already made progress :-), haha. As a backing track substitute I fired up a Logic Pro drum track to exercise to. Will see what progress I can make by doing this every day.

When I read "block of 5 days" I thought "oh weird, do we get the weekend off?". That was a silly assumption. No rest for the wicked I guess haha. I'm excited to dive in and would love to see an analogous lesson for sweep picking!
P.S. any chance we get a breakdown of that insane pentatonic video from the other day?
