#164 - The MOST Important Daily Scale EXERCISE! | (5 MIN Workout + Tabs)

Time for this month's wishlist winner! :) You guys and girls voted for a daily music theory exercise revolving around the modes - I also added an alternate picking twist to it!
Get your video play-alongs (without any talking - 3 tempo levels) and backing tracks here: https://www.dropbox.com/sh/zncwp228dyez7u1/AAAQW9g8hdJ6kkm-1tfYBrIEa?dl=0

The practice goal with this workout (aside from clean & relaxed alternate picking) is memorizing the characteristic scale degrees of the modes and their closely connected relationship. As you can see in this video, they are not just 7 completely separated scales - you mostly just have to change one note of natural major/minor to get to the other modes :)

Since music theory is topping the voting this month, I have another extremely helpful video for you next week! This one took a lot of work and I think you will love it - there is also another epic video coming to the channel on April 23rd... you will see it first, as always :)

These are amazing for practice. It's helped my pinky a lot, but still having difficulty transitioning from a 8- 7- 5 to a 8- 6- 5 it's still hard for my brain to adjust. Finally got the "slow" speed down.

Hey man, 3 note per string scales are great for shredding, so it's worth learning for when you want to melt faces. More traditional scale patterns are better for arpeggios and chords, so I'd learn both.

I was wondering sometimes why i have a different fingers patterns and I just realized Bernth is using 3 notes per strings that forces you to include 2 frets stretch .... and sometimes i was using 2 notes per string and move to the next string in a easier way shifting positions sometimes ... I think is important to get used practicing 3 notes per string right for speed purposes ? can you clarify? Thanks

Great!.

Very good perspective of the guitar . Thanks.

This is an awesome exercise - 2 in 1. Amazing, thanks Bernth!

Another interesting tip. If you already know your 7 positions of say the Major or Minor scale, each mode is the same as one of those positions. So there aren't any new positions to learn outside of those 7.

I agree with everyone! I love the camera angle. Now if only we could get you to use a white guitar pick so we can actually see it :)

Same question!

Great Bernth! You really did it! Camera angle from Point of View. I Love it! And the exercise itself is good too... It's indeed a topic I wanted to include into my routine since some time now. Thank you!

Great timing. I’ve been working on the modes lately. But another technique I’ve been working on is string muting and noticed how flat your left index finger is while playing. Is that for stretching the distance between fingers? Muting? Or both?
