#151 - 15 MIN GUITAR WORKOUT (Alternate Picking, Left Hand Technique, Speed, Timing)

Time for a very special episode - today I'd like to practice with YOU!

I prepared an intermediate workout with different exercises according to your wishlist: alternate picking is the big focus and I incorporated some key exercises and new concepts. This is an awesome intermediate workout/warmup to start your day with :)

You can download the tabs and guitar pro files below! I also provided the workout video (without intro/outro) and another more challenging workout for streaming/download here: https://www.dropbox.com/sh/vttzs7lnz5075bn/AAAkzTuQB2fiYk7bDIT3q18pa?dl=0

There are also 3 backing tracks without my guitar in this folder: one additional slower take, the basic workout, and the advanced workout.

Hope you have fun with this, have an awesome day! :)

These are great exercises!

For how much time should I do this? And does it make sense to increase the speed once it becomes easy or would I be better off moving to something else?

Salvo

Great video! Is it possible to share it via google drive as well?

Wow, this is incredibly helpful, possibly life changing! :-D Thank you.

Thanks so much for sharing this! Here's an in-depth explanation of why the fingers should stay in place with the spider exercise: https://www.patreon.com/posts/38-finger-you-do-30853257 Hope that helps :)

This is great! I noticed on the spider exercise that your alternate fretting fingers stay in place (maybe not pressing down but at least muting there) until you need them. This doesn't happen naturally for me in this exercise - I can keep my fingers pretty close to the fretboard but I have to focus to keep from lifting them early. How important is it to keep them in place? In general when I'm playing, I'm never sure if I should leave my fretting fingers in place if I know that's the next note I'll get back to on that string, and I don't need the finger. It seems like there are pros and cons to leaving it there. It's not really part of this exercise but it feels related.

Thanks so much for sharing that Victoria! :)

So this highlighted a bad habit of mine! I was resting my hand on the volume knob of my guitar and then moving it to the bridge for the lower strings. Happy to report that a week of doing this every day has rectified that!

Happy you can benefit from this one, Matt! :) Yes, you can increase the tempo with the Guitar Pro file - but you can also isolate the most challenging workouts/topics and move on to different exercises that focus on them! Over time, you will figure out the exercises that suit your own goals and progress best :)

Bernd Brodträger

First of all, great work! These are good exercises to get my ring and pink finger dexterity going! Secondly, once we master the tempo given do you recommend we increase the tempo on a metronome or start a new exercise routine ?

Late reply; but there are two versions in the Dropbox without the lead guitar. :)

I'm still very new at guitar, about 6 months in and this workout is perfect for me! you the best!

Syd

Hi Bernth, I've been using this workout to warm up the last couple of weeks and it works great! Would you consider releasing a "drums&click only" version of both the standard and advanced tracks? I think they could be useful to practice the same workout in different positions.

Francesco

Man you are great as always. Every time I practice with you like this lesson and the Sweep picking lesson, beside I learn so much it really get's me working . for you it takes 15 minutes for me 45 min ...:)) until I do this correctly and fluently etc. I love it man finally i have stuff to work on my practice time... I love that you included Major/minor , Diminished shapes ... awesome this helps me with my sweeping technique to learn this shapes by heart ..! just great stuff thank you

Adrian Nechiti

Brilliant video Bernth. Please more like this.

this is brilliant; and a great way to expose what I need to work on - I agree; these types of lessons are most welcome

This one was pretty awesome, it’s like a mini practice session. Like others here I think it’s be cool to see more of these.

Great job. Thanks!!

Manuel Garcia

This is a great workout, many Thanks!!!

This is exactly what I needed Thanks!

Ormando Gomez Jr.

This is just what I have been looking for, a structured routine with lots of different elements at a reasonable tempo to start with, thanks Bernth.......it's a cracker ( great )

Steve Shaw

Great exercises!! Does anyone else struggle with their 2nd and third fingers being too close on the first spider exercise? I have made great progress in the last 2 weeks (playing nearly at tempo) also trying to aim more for the pad just behind the fingernail of the pinky finger arching to create more clearance for the following string to ring out, but my second and third finger become very close (straddling either side of the fret wire with the third finger being at the top of the fret near the previous fret wire ) is this common or am i perhaps angling neck/ hand awkwardly? Thumb is mostly behind neck (middleish moving as i play) any tips? thanks in advance for any suggestions

Awesome. I think this is by far the best warm up video i have seen so far. I think i will use this for quite some time as part of my routine. It helps keeping really focussed on playing, not having to think about the excercises you want to do. Also very useful not to frickle around with your metronome after every part.

Wow that's pretty fun, tricky tricky, that's a really good exercise!

Carlos Mendez

Awesome. Great job on this Bernth. learning from many angles at once. Thanks again.

Great workout, combined exercices into one excerrcise .... Thanks Bernth

Bjørn Visser

This is the best - awesome workout, and will def put in practice routine for a while - needed, much needed, on my part! Thanks! BTW - the GP files are always awesome - but there is something about playing with the teacher that really helps! That's a bonus!

John H

Sometimes, I try to push the speed a bit, but more often than not, find myself struggling to sound good, so I come back to a slower pace in order to evolve with quality... Should I struggle more in order to build the speed? Or this means I need to play slow a lot more? Thank you for the content! I really think I'm improving with your tips and tricks :)

This was exactly what I was looking for!! Thank you, I would love to see more of these. Its so much easier doing a warmup like this to a video. It helps keep me focused on the exercises. Thank you so much for this PLEASE keep more of these coming.

Bobby McKee

Great one! Gotta nitpick for myself on a few of those blocks (my left hand is pretty non-cooperative), but this is a great daily for me to chew on as a beginner!
