#120 - 10 Year Practice Progress - My Biggest MISTAKES

Before we get to the top-voted topic of your wishlist on Tuesday, I'd like to share a special video with you today. My father recently sent me old videos of my playing and I thought it would be great to dissect the BIGGEST technique & theory mistakes I made on my guitar journey so far!

I really regret not working on these problems earlier and they prevented me from making significant progress back then. So I really hope that you can get a lot out of this analysis, I want you to make faster and more efficient progress than me :)

I also added the full 2007 video below in case you would like to check out the entire performance and mistakes I made in there!

Not going to lie. Thumb positions is something i am still struggling with. Mostly when it comes to going up and down the fret board trying to make sure it keeps up with the middle finger. For example going from low E to high E and in-between my thumb sometimes becomes stuck in one position for the whole thing.

just found a great use for a s set of old scrabble tiles, when you just cannot immediately do the scale backwards, just set up some tiles from c to c. its made going down the scale a more visual reference.

Very helpful video, Bernth. What I would like to know, is, how I could develop a sure playing with a index, ring and pinky on the high b and e strings. I'm always loosing grip and I don't know, how to get a sure grip in the left hand.

I am also guilty of big mistakes and no progress in years........

Ah the clip at the end takes me right back to playing a Jackson Performer Rhodes that I'd stuck EMGs in, with all the gain settings maxed out on everything, to about 10 people at some village fair or whatever. Unfortunately, unlike Bernth, I've squandered the 20+ years since then and barely improved, so I need to get started ;-)

I really want to pull in my 4th and 5th fingers on the left hand, but I use them to help quiet the hi E and B strings. I'll keeping trying! Great video, thanks Bernth!

It took me 20 years to realize I needed to reinvent my technique. Wish these tips existed back in those days.

the ending is just perfect, 10 people in 2007 to 120K in 2019, amazing!!!! <3

Never give up on your dreams..........that is so true.

I liked this video a lot. It was really helpful. I'm so glad to hear the explanation for cleaning up picking hand technique. I'm definitely going to have to examine mine because I think I make this mistake. I did learn from beginning about thumb placement so that's never been a big issue, but I also never started with music theory. Your videos have been a great help to explain a lot of this which has proven beneficial. Although I can't say I've mastered any of it yet, I can say my playing has gotten more fluid and smooth lately. I mostly practice without the amp so my string attack is probably harder than it really needs to be. But I do feel like I've gained understanding.

Yes...the 2020 Bernth sounds more like me....🙈🤣 seriously how can one play like that? Incredible. I would be happy playing like the 2007 Bernth!
