Okay, let's have some fun this weekend :) I thought it would be cool to compare the most common cliches when it comes to Jazz and Metal guitar playing. You can find the tabs and guitar pro files below to learn some new licks and tricks!
Here's an in-depth explanation of what's going on here:
Level 1: Chords
In Jazz, we mostly encounter seventh chords (root, third, fifth, seventh) and they are often extended with tension beyond that. In Metal, we mostly work with intervals and not with full chords (power chord = perfect fifth, we often also see minor/major thirds or perfect fourths)
Level 2: Scales
In Jazz, we can find many different scales and they often accent every single chord change. In the example I played in the video, I was switching between the whole tone scale, dorian scale, diminished scale, and chromatic scale. In Metal, we mostly focus on dark modal sounds (phrygian in this case) and don't switch between different scales that much
Level 3: Arpeggios
Arpeggios are once again used to accent chords and their structure in Jazz - the example in the video is less creative than the usual practical application but a nice demonstration of this mindset. In Metal, we often see arpeggios in the context of sweep picking (no surprise by now I guess!)
Level 4: Up-Tempo
When it comes to fast rhythm playing, we sometimes see walking bass lines combined with chords in Jazz (rhythm changes, I - VI - II - V cadences) and I really like these comping phrases! In Metal, we often see downstrokes, complex rhythmic patterns, and anything that brings adrenaline and excitement
Level 5: Why Note Both?
This is my main point of making this video - why not take inspiration from both playing styles? This video kind of puts my 2 personalities together (music theory, clean execution, and 'clever/creative' phrasing clashes with energetic metal, speed, and shredding), and I have learned so much from playing and studying different styles. So I really recommend expanding your horizon and hope that this video inspires you to do so :)
