#114 - JAZZ VS METAL / Epic Guitar Battle

Okay, let's have some fun this weekend :) I thought it would be cool to compare the most common cliches when it comes to Jazz and Metal guitar playing. You can find the tabs and guitar pro files below to learn some new licks and tricks!

Here's an in-depth explanation of what's going on here:

Level 1: Chords

In Jazz, we mostly encounter seventh chords (root, third, fifth, seventh) and they are often extended with tension beyond that. In Metal, we mostly work with intervals and not with full chords (power chord = perfect fifth, we often also see minor/major thirds or perfect fourths)

Level 2: Scales

In Jazz, we can find many different scales and they often accent every single chord change. In the example I played in the video, I was switching between the whole tone scale, dorian scale, diminished scale, and chromatic scale. In Metal, we mostly focus on dark modal sounds (phrygian in this case) and don't switch between different scales that much

Level 3: Arpeggios

Arpeggios are once again used to accent chords and their structure in Jazz - the example in the video is less creative than the usual practical application but a nice demonstration of this mindset. In Metal, we often see arpeggios in the context of sweep picking (no surprise by now I guess!)

Level 4: Up-Tempo

When it comes to fast rhythm playing, we sometimes see walking bass lines combined with chords in Jazz (rhythm changes, I - VI - II - V cadences) and I really like these comping phrases! In Metal, we often see downstrokes, complex rhythmic patterns, and anything that brings adrenaline and excitement

Level 5: Why Note Both?

This is my main point of making this video - why not take inspiration from both playing styles? This video kind of puts my 2 personalities together (music theory, clean execution, and 'clever/creative' phrasing clashes with energetic metal, speed, and shredding), and I have learned so much from playing and studying different styles. So I really recommend expanding your horizon and hope that this video inspires you to do so :)

Blues vs metal next This stuff is insane and my ears live for this I love your music

jaz

Hi Bernth, can we have the backing track of this? Thanks

Davens Michael

LOL at Jazz Guy's expression when he has to listen to Metal Guy's thrash chord pattern on Level 1, like painful patience... X^D

Haha awesome stuff. Really like how it complements each other at the end

Jon Hew

Oh my god I didn’t realize that was Bernth playing both people people. I was cracking up because when the Jazz guy would play Bernth had a look on his face like ....BORING...let’s start the shredding. I think he even yawned during the first video!

Bobby McKee

Great stuff, It just shows how two different styles can compliment each other,

Steve Shaw

Another one of favourites so far - must have been lot of fun but a lot of time and editing! I found the cord/scale markers above some of the jazz sections really helped me 'see the theory', if that makes any sense. I was self taught for nearly 20 years and have lots of bad habits - a big struggle is trying to move from knowing shops and how to play riffs, to how to play in scales or keys - so being able to see what I was playing over, as well as the tab (can't sight read), was a helpful 'light bulb' moment.

Richard Simpson

Both together was fantastic!

Alan

WOW that was FUN. MORE!!!!

Bruce Klickstein

I love when jazz is incorporated into metal. Bands like Revocation, Gorod and Beyond Creation blend them together seamlessly and it sounds amazing!

Jazz + Metal = Prog Metal

Ronald Gillespie

Definitely both!

Kearns Guitars

That was great fun!

Tyler Sherkin

Inspiring! Sometimes it takes a knowledgable creative nudge to get the idea flowing. I have literally been trying to figure out ways to merge the two (having limited theory knowledge, but growing because of this channel) - this is great!

John H

i took me way too long to recognize that Bernth played both guys :D

Arvid Richter

Awesome video! I like them all, I can't wait to dig into this. :)
