#109 - How To Write BETTER Solos I Phrasing, Note Choices, Emotion & More

Time for another lesson, my friends! Since the video on triads in the context of guitar solos was received so well (thanks for the input), I'd like to share another practical lesson on composing and playing solos!

In this one, we discuss even more topics that will help with your licks and solo takes:

 •  How do you find the full chords/key you are playing over with power chord riffs?

 •  How do you improve your phrasing to play more interesting licks?

 •  How do you pick the right notes for the right chords?

I hope you enjoy this one, don't forget to download your files below! We will look into building/improving technique again next week :)

Comments

for us beginners it would really be appreciated with these examples in slow :)

Thank you very much for the kind words Gary, that honors me! I actually came across these 'no feel' comments below an incredible and outstanding performance by Steve Vai and that inspired me to record this video :)

Nice lesson very important step. Shredding is 🔥 but without knowledge it is easy to lose melodic flavor thanx Bernth. 🤟🏽🎸

Great lesson. I never understand the theme of "shredders" have no feeling. Anyone listened to Buckethead? Plini? Vai? Or....my guy Bernth!

Gary Beltrami

That was a great lesson. You are an amazing guitar player with so much feel and knowledge that I am proud to learn from you. Thanks for these wonderful lessons 🤘🏻🤘🏻

A common statement from many people to shredding as such, is that they prefer slower melodic playing notes with enough room for the notes to breathe over a continuous frenzy of notes. I liked take 3 the best.
