#107 - Best Guitar Solo Exercise | How To STOP Playing Boring Licks!

Welcome back to another lesson my friends, hope you are having an amazing weekend so far :) This is one of the top voted topics for this month - how do you improvise/write solos interestingly? How do you stop playing the same old licks all the time? The solution often lies within the fundamentals and I did my best to show you a practical approach to this in the new lesson.

Once again, I also recorded video play-along files for the exercise in the video, that way you can work on this together with me in the next practice session

Don't forget to also download your tabs/guitar pro files and have an awesome time practicing! :)

I really wish you made it so I could install the video on the top page, is there anywhere it is or is it not available?

Dakota Remington

Best video as well.

Hellvetic

I had watched the video on YouTube before joining. I'm learning to improve my soloing. Thanks.

There are people that will pay 5 bucks for a backing track, imagine the disappointment when coming here, pay whats to pay and not finding what you said we will find . Again, not saying that it's nothing here, but not what I paid for :(

Cristian

Thanks for the answer, tho I found lots of good lessons that will improve my playing, I came here especially for that backing track because you said I will find it here :( There are people that will pay 5 bucks for a backing track, imagine the disappointment when coming here, pay whats to pay and not finding what you said we will find . Again, not saying that it's nothing here, but not what I paid for :(

Cristian

Hello Cristian, please refer to the latest lesson for an awesome backing track! It's currently not planned to revisit older lessons and to work on extra files for them (I delete all project files a week later, it would be a massive amount of data otherwise) since I'd rather give more helpful input and exercises in the form of new content :) Thanks for understanding, have a great day!

Bernd Brodträger

Thank you for this lesson. But, I kinda came here hoping for the backing track from the start of the video with guitar and without the guitar (just the drums), those will be awesome to play along with. Is there another place where I can download those?

Cristian

Was I the only one with the guitar in the hand who got scared by the clapping hands in the first seconds of the video? OMG Thank you for that :D My guitar was unplugged after that and I payed more attention.

I pick the string before sliding, by pausing I mean just taking a break before the transition, and the choice of the finger depends on what you're playing next (think in the next fingering)! :)

Bernd Brodträger

Thanks so much for your timely response. I fell in love with the content and lessons you know. I saw your YT channel and I immediately noticed your technical knowledge and skills. Now, I actually enjoy practicing again. Something's still unclear to me: 1. Do you pick the string first, before sliding? 2. By pausing, you mean just switching to the next 'box' without sliding? 3. At some points I would rather slide with my ring finger, or use different fingers all together (personal preference). Is that okay too?

Demolish3r

Thanks a lot for asking that! In case you mean the exercise itself, make sure to check out the video play-alongs I posted (DropBox link is in the post), there you can see it at slower tempos :) The slide is a bit tricky, I use my middle finger to slide but have to use it for the next shape on a different string! You can also pause before the transition, that one is not the most important part of the exercise, it's all about remembering those triad shapes :)

Bernd Brodträger

I started practicing again yesterday, after not playing for years. Could you please elaborate about switching/sliding from one position to the next? It seems after playing a cycle, you first hit the first note again and then switch fingers to slide? I can't tell from the video and want to practice the right way

Demolish3r

This is good stuff! I tend to do the exact mistake that you talk about. I know I do it and I know in theory how to fix it but I too often fall in that trap anyway. Its great to get lessons and examples so I can practice and hoppfully get rid of this anoying habit.

bernth.Can you except ,e on facebook please..Im a$20 patron

Tboy Istre

Thanks for sharing that Richard :) I was actually using the economy picking approach for that one, here's a cool exercise for pentatonic shredding like that: https://www.patreon.com/posts/58-economy-33359257

Bernd Brodträger

How do we play that fast hammer/pull pentatonic lick?!?! Great lesson! I've already found a nice little hole in a song where I can do a sweep up one chord and then a lovely slower sweep down the next :) :)

Richard Simpson

Quality lesson. Good discussion on the thinking process and theory behind it. The PDF & GP5 files are very helpful!!

Marco F

excellent instruction, it almost feels as though we are entering into an area where the lead part is truly "singing" above the rhythm - I've always wanted to be able to think that way! Thanks!

This is o

brian atherton

That has resolved the issue, many thanks,Bernth :)

Steve Shaw

This is awesome, thx Bernth!! Was already working on your previous Arpeggio's lessons and this one is helping to connect the dots

Jon Hew

Got it thank you Bernth the new link works fine, but FYI the text for "Once again, I also recorded video play-along files for the exercise in the video, that way you can work on this together with me in the next practice session:" is now linking to the old dropbox link with the kemper files your promotional bits and certificates.

Danny Batchelor

Thanks Danny, does it work now? Tried to update it on the phone, if it doesn't work I'll look into it as soon as I'm back in the office 🙂

Bernd Brodträger

I cannot see it either.

Steve Shaw

Also Bernth I don't think the dropbox link is correct it doesn't have the practice video.

Danny Batchelor

A fantastic lesson, I would love to see more like this where you break down your solo or rhythm with the thought process behind it

Danny Batchelor

Just so good Bernth, even when you play just the pentatonic it sounds great, thanks for the hard work you put into these lessons.

Steve Shaw

another step forward ... super lesson
