#102 Golden Ratio: 5 Steps To PERFECT Picking Technique

Today we work on an extremely important topic - please make sure to check out this lesson if you care about developing an efficient and reliable overall technique!

I recorded some video play-alongs for you once again, with these you can practice the entire workout in 90BPM and 120BPM together with me :) Download them here: https://www.dropbox.com/sh/b7jx6badhumpyjb/AADFI6ejxuVZYCJQbxFLXIS_a?dl=0

I made the files a bit shorter this time, that way can loop them and don't have to download these huge file sizes! I also attached the tabs and guitar pro files below, have fun practicing :)

This exercise is GREAT! I had been trying to break out of a bad habit of practicing repeating patterns on the same string so I could get more comfortable with cross-string picking patterns. This exercise is really helping me break that pattern and get more at ease with quickly changing strings regardless the pattern!

Yes! this really is a great exercise! thanks a lot.

Thanks - I am signing up for "10 Steps.." - I think the majority of my timing issues are def my clock in my brain! :) Great advice - thank you!

Thanks for that very important input! Switching from 16th note to triplets is also one of my practice goals - it's extremely satisfying to do that in a fluid way when you are improvising and I still have work to do to make that switch perfectly every time (not 'searching' for the right note spacing for a couple of notes). This is an awesome exercise and I want to cover it more for sure, in the context of solos and not so much when it comes to rhythm as we did that in my course '10 Steps to Modern Shredding' in many videos already. For now, I'd recommend analyzing the changes in technique when it comes to these 2 motions and finding a way to connect them in your routine! You can always work slowly towards that goal, so if you feel like it would be good to isolate your playing first before the video play-alongs, make sure to try it out with a metronome! I hope that helps a bit and that you are still having fun working on this!

HI Bernth - I have worked this into my morning practice routine, and what I am finding is that switching from the 16th notes to the triplets is not connecting to the hands. I am using your play alongs- and I really appreciate you creating those. My question is, do you find tempo with technique is as much memory through repetition as it is recognized skill? I guess what I am getting at is, I've always thought I could do the tempo/timing changes on my own - but am starting to wonder it that is really just a function of learning a "song" more than actual skill. Again - thank you for your teaching - I really can appreciate the time you put into providing us great content.

I need these effective licks.Thank U Bernth.

Awesome exercises, explained in a perfect way. Thanks a lot Bernth, You Rocks, gretings from Spain.

Great material, as always. Btw, am I the only one who cant alternate pick anymore between string when going economy is the most favorable way? This is happening to me in the 3 first alternate picking exercises

wow, so much hard work going into these brilliant lessons! thank you

I enjoy the format, the play-along videos with different tempo are very effective for me. Thank you

That's what I call teaching .. the play-along videos are invaluable .. thank you

B., you are a damned, damned good guitarist, but, I dare to say, an EVEN better teacher. What a gift you are stuck with (you probably know that "vocation", from "voce", quite literally means "calling", like being made a Corleone-offer you can't refuse, so a damned, damned good teacher). Party on, Garth.

Another great exercise, these are really helping my technique, never want to play in front of anyone, but love the challenges of the exercises. Thanks Bernth.

Steve Shaw

Dude your exercises have changed my life! Seriously, I practice these things slow for a couple hours, then later in the day, I am playing WAY better than I have ever played before. so crazy, thank you!

Bobby McKee

Hi Bernth, amazing exercise! Plus all the extra stuff like the backing tracks and play along videos, that has really motivated me to practise more! I have been following your lessons for a while on YouTube but it is well worth joing here on Patreon

Pavel

Great exercise, thank you so much! :-) I definitely sucked trying, but starting at a lower speed really helped. At least for the alternate picking part and some hammer-ons. The rest is still too tricky for me, but I can already feel the improvement! :-)

The is an amazing workout. I can’t wait to get started. Thanks so much 🤘🏻🤘🏻

Michael Iadevaio

Thanks so much for sharing that David! Happy that you can benefit from the lesson material :)

Hi Bernth! I'm new here but have been learning from you for a while now. I have your 10 steps to modern shredding program and plan to purchase your sweep picking program in the future. Thank you for all the hard work you put into your content to help others improve, you are a great player and teacher.
