#90 - These 3 Exercises Will Unlock Your Right Hand!

Today we check out another topic from your wishlist for this month - timing & rhythm exercises!

These workouts are not only beneficial for playing riffs or chord patterns, they will also help you with using more of your wrist when you are playing fast. After a couple of minutes of playing patterns like that, my right hand feels very warmed up and I neglected to work with more than one or two strings for rhythm workouts for far too long. So please give them a try, even if you don't plan on becoming the world's best funk guitar player :)

Don't forget to download your files below, have a great weekend!

Is that a mistake maybe...? In the article about 3 right hand excercises ( https://www.patreon.com/posts/90-these-3-will-37912263 ) the caption says #90 - Timing And Rhythm.pdf - link: https://www.patreon.com/file?h=37912263&i=5744145 - In the linked pdf the caption is not #90 but #89 ==> #89 - Timing & Rhythm.

I think the strings are changing the motion of the pick and you press too hard on the pick. If you play with the same technique as Bernth, but not holding a pick and strum down with your index nail and up with your thumpnail you will play with a loose wrist and the right technique. It works for me, because I played with a locekd wrist for 20 years and this helps me a lot.

Happy to hear this Rob, thanks for sharing! :)

Bernd Brodträger

Been seeing rest results practicing this with my rhythm. I’m a pretty new player and this has opened a lot of doors. Thanks Bernth!

I love the Hendrix Chord !! I just cannot do this!! I’ve been trying for days I get the shits and go back to my shredding How do I do this

jaz

Thanks a lot Bernth. Would love to know more about different muting techniques, for perfect rhythm playing without unwanted noise..

Pulasthi Amarasinghe

I think the best way is to use your fretting hand for that - your picking hand will be hovering above the body of the guitar for strumming, unlike with alternate picking (where you are connected to the guitar with your wrist in most cases). I'd love to feature different muting techniques, let's see how the next lesson voting goes :)

Bernd Brodträger

Bernth, what is the correct technique we can use to mute the 1st and 6th strings while strumming chords...?

Pulasthi Amarasinghe

This is one of the exercises that I got a quick glimpse at that made me want to subscribe to your Patreon. You really drill down and make sure our hands are working properly.

John Nelson

This was crucial for me because I often like play three string chords (A, D, G) and was stumped on muting the others (both Es and B). After I warmed up with these, I was shredding some great rhythmic patterns :D

Arcanist Bear

Great great exercice !! Thanks a lot Bernth :) ! Hoping to see more rhythm exercices like this one !

Flo

Sorry mate. That's just plane lazy on my behalf. Apologies again

Daniel Roberts

Hey Daniel, when you open up the downloaded file (#89 - Timing & Rhythm) you will see 4 measures: measures 1 & 2 = pattern 1, measure 3 = pattern 2, and measure 4 = pattern 3! I hope that helps :) If something went wrong with the download, please just try downloading it again. I just double-checked and everything seems in order! Thanks for asking

Bernd Brodträger

When I download the pdf it's just the first pattern

Daniel Roberts

Hey Daniel, thanks for asking that! All 3 patterns that we check out in the video are written down in the sheet - did I miss any additional patterns here? Thanks for clarifying :)

Bernd Brodträger

Any tabs for the other patterns

Daniel Roberts

Great help in unlocking the right hand. Thanks Bernth! You're an awesome teacher!

Jeffrey R Davis

the is the tits mate. cheers. i come for the shred but stay for the chug. every time you do a rhythm video ( i e this or playing 7/8 stuff) it improves my song writing so much

Daniel Roberts

Exactly! It sounds silly now, but I never noticed how important it is to warm up the right hand too, I always thought that doing some stretches and strumming the strings a few minutes would be enough.. o0 Thanks, Bernth, you are a FANTASTIC teacher!

Sergio Enrique Ochoa Guimarães

Thanks a lot for sharing that Sergio! It's the same for me, a real eye-opener actually :) I warmed up for my pop/rock gig with the usual alternate picking exercises until last year and wondered why my right hand still feels a bit stiff with difficult strumming patterns after a long warmup. It always depends on what you will actually play after the warmup and these exercises really helped me with getting in shape for rhythmic/percussive playing! I'd love to dive more into different music/approaches, let's see how the community votes and decides!

Bernd Brodträger

Wow, I really felt a huge difference when playing fast alternate picking licks after this exercise, including in hand synchronization! It's also really nice to learn different techniques of genres other than rock/metal, that's something I would love to see more often here, if possible (like jazz and neosoul, for example)! :)
