#85 - Top 10 Best Picking Exercises

Good morning to the community - hope you are all having an awesome weekend! :)

I'll upload a compilation video of my 10 favorite picking exercises we looked at over the last year on YouTube today. This just serves as a quick summary concerning picking technique workouts and I think it's a great idea to have the most effective ones in just one video! I also attached the tabs and guitar pro files of each one in case you want to revisit them.

Next week, we will look at 2 really cool lesson topics once again! Lesson one will deal with the topic of playing/sounding faster and lesson two is the final topic from this month's lesson wishlist - really looking forward to sharing that with you!

Stay safe and have fun practicing my friends!

Hello Luca, when it comes to practice plan creation, I really recommend checking this out: https://www.patreon.com/posts/137-5-steps-to-44802061 You are the master of your routine and progress, so once you identify the topics you need in order to play the music you love, you just need to put together exercises you find on the platform - and you will have your ultimate personalized routine :) Hope that helps, have an awesome day!

Bernd Brodträger

hi bernth, is it possible to have some kind of personal workout routine based on my available time everyday and level? Maybe a little chat/check to notice what i'm lacking the most or what i want to focus to? For example i can do exercise mostly at night or after dinner due to work issues and home stuffs...also maybe there are things that i think i'm good at but i don't have enough self criticism to pinpoint my problems, and i'm afraid i'll lose focus on some crucial aspects of my skills. Thank you in advance and for any kind of response :)

Luca Onida

Guthrie does it and also recommends it, so y'know...

Joe Rhodes

Thats my question as well.... thanks

LJR

Hi Bernth, I've been following my new set practice plan for 4 days and now stumbled upon one further, very important question: Is there a best practice for increasing the tempo? I've been playing some of these exercises and finally am comfortable at lower speeds (around 90-100bpm). What is the best way to improve/increase the speed? Is "simply making the click faster" a good idea? I am currently in the state where I can play some exercises well at a certain speed, but it gets sloppy at 5-10bpm faster. Should I keep practicing the faster speed (while sloppy) or should I go on practicing the slower speed until I am able to increase the bpm without it getting sloppy?

Fhynix

Hey Fhynix, this helped me out a lot since I recorded this video a year ago: https://www.patreon.com/posts/99-best-finger-39131138 This is another helpful one: https://www.patreon.com/posts/182-best-finger-53895697 Hope this helps :)

Bernd Brodträger

Hi Bernth, in exercise 5 at speed (starting at 4:04) I noticed "the flying pinky". As this is something I currently struggle with myself: Is this something one should work on specifically or does this issue disappear when playing fast licks that actually require fast movements of the pinky?

Fhynix

Danke schon, Bernth!

Christopher Jan Benitez

Hi Bernth! I find this exercises really challenging. So I am really want do all these. Can u pl tell the bpm of each exercise?

Indraneel Roy

Guitar Pro for the real deal, Tuxguitar for the free/shareware alternative :)

Bernd Brodträger

Hello, Bernth! What's the best .gp5 file reader you'd recommend? Thanks for the awesome workouts!

Christopher Jan Benitez

this is amazing. I literally dont need 4 other patreons because of the value in yours. Theres a "holy sh1t" moment every 10 minutes

Andrei Cristof

I do this myself too, so same question here!

Tamás Piri-Cser

Hi there, I use Flat: Online collaborative music notation software and works very well and is free up to 15 uploads. You can remove and upload as often as you want.

Dirk den Ouden

I must be missing something, I try to anchor my hand with out touching the strings and the back of my hand is jammed between the strings and the fine tuning knobs. What am I doing wrong? lots of people have this type bridge and my hands are average size. I have room when I am palm muting but not when I move back to play the string open, I have always lifted my hand up when I am not muting.

Shaman Cola

Perfect thanks dude

Jny Hzd

Thanks for asking! Some members are working with the free/shareware program Tuxguitar, hope that helps :)

Bernd Brodträger

I've tried opening these on guitar pro but with no success, is there another way to access these tabs? Thanks

Jny Hzd

Bernd Brodträger

Hi Bernth! Thanks for this great compilation! Would it be possible to include the reference to the lesson number / link to each of the the 10 videos? I am trying to explore some of these exercises more in depth, so was trying to locate the original video lesson, but got a little bit lost among all of the amazing content you've put out on Patreon :) Thanks a ton and amazing content as always!

Alexis Lavergne

Hi Bernth, what do you think about anchoring the pinky behind the pickups/high e string? I started doing it because it feels like it keeps me in position but idk if it's bad practice to do so.

Maximilian Schlipf

Hi Bernth having lots of trouble with the triplet picking portion of #9 ,of episode 85 top 10 best picking ,I believe the triplet is d u d u d u if correct how slow to make come out proper. Thanks Mitch

Mitch Truen

Hey Man! First of all thanks for a your hard work and dedication - it rly helps me to try and get into the guitar metal world. Second - do you have a group tab for the "TOP 10 BEST PICKING EXERCISES! | Guitar Lesson + Tabs"? - cause I have to say that it's a little bit confusing to find proper tabs - I can see the tabs above but those are different from the video. I just need the GP cause I don't always have access to the internet and I also have a quite good memory of you playing in a certain tempo so I just rly need only the tabs after watching your video a couple of times. Cheer m8!

Br3inboy

Great question James! I need a connection to the bridge at all times (except for chord strumming/patterns) so my hand is never hovering over the bridge - but I do tend to move up and down to get the right angles for the individual strings! So it's not completely anchored on the bridge but I'm always connected to it in some way so that I can switch between palm muting and open strings easily as well :)

Bernd Brodträger

Do you anchor your picking wrist/hand at the bridge when you're playing string skipping??

James Li

Hey JP, thanks for the comment! I really recommend checking out the full video for this one, there you can also find multiple files for the exercise: https://www.patreon.com/posts/70-exercise-that-34996878

Bernd Brodträger

I am not able to find or download the tabs for the first exercise, is it available?

JP

hi, thank you so much for putting up these contents Bernth, really helps me a lot. like in many other of your exercises, can you please upload a backing track for these with multiple bpm?

Tanveer Ahmed

Bernth, this is a killer set of exercises. I cannot imagine how thoughtfully you designed them. Some of the best exercises that that shred technique specific. Thanks so much!

Vikram Joshi

Thanks you Bernth! Amazing job for us!

Mir

Thanks a lot!

Mir

Thanks Bernth

Ricardo Corrales

Thanks for asking Ricardo! You can find all files for this lesson here: https://www.patreon.com/posts/39-biggest-shred-31032963

Bernd Brodträger

Hi Bernth, Awesome exercises... how can I get the backing tracks for exercise 7 on this lesson?.. Sorry, I've been going through the lessons but haven't been able to find it... cheers.

Ricardo Corrales

That's a great question Bruce! I really like the Konnakol approach for counting - instead of using numbers, you are working with rhythmic syllables here. Maybe you know this approach from viral Facebook videos, here's a short summary of how they count different groups, you will immediately find this easier than saying 'one-e-and-a-two-e-and-a' or 'one-two-three-four': mayavishnumusic.files.wordpress.com/2015/06/8-konnakol-syllables1.png?w=502&h=333

Bernd Brodträger

I have a little trouble with sixteenth triplets on some tempos. Is there a way you count them in you head?

Bruce Hatcher

Hey Stephan, welcome to the community - happy to have you on here! :) I'd recommend going through the lessons one at a time so you get the maximum value out of every exercise and theory concept. You can pick a topic that you want to improve (see the tabs 'picking lessons', 'music theory',...) and start there or you can just work yourself through the entire archive! This lesson is a great one to start with since I summarized the 10 best picking lessons so far on here, I plan to do that more often whenever we reach a certain number of workouts dedicated to a specific topic :) So with lessons like that, there are a lot of attachments (I don't think they included a 'download all' button yet) but with the other lessons, you just have the PDF tabs, guitar pro files and backing tracks - so usually less files!

Bernd Brodträger

Hey, i'm completely new to patreon and of course your channel, i have been watching several of your youtube-videos and decided to get the access. One technical question: do i have to download every file on its own or does the possibility exist to download the complete lesson or even all of you files on patreon at once?

Stephan

I totally agree man

Anas Azkoul

I have to thank you for this awesome10 picking exercise. It has made such a difference in my playing. I work on it everyday. Again thanks🤘🏻🤘🏻

Michael Iadevaio

Hey Seth, thanks so much for your patience - I'll look into it again right in the morning, I thought all questions were resolved 🙂👍🏻

Bernd Brodträger

Hi Bernth, I sent you a message and an email last week and I'm not sure if you have read it yet, I hope you can check on it soon! Thanks!

Seth Reyes

What an amazing idea Kris, thanks a lot - you did an awesome job with that! :)

Bernd Brodträger

This is great as warm up exercise to get the fingers moving and the picking in time. Great work Bernth, thanks again.

Steve Shaw

Thanks a ton. I have a hard time finding the stuff I need on Patreon, so this video is a godsend.

Thor Hansen

I have made a cross reference for the top 10 to the actual lesson so you can get the backing tracks or watch the top 10 lesson separately. 1) #50: Ultimate Alternate Picking Workout | Kickstart Your Speed in 2020! 2) #58: Economy Picking | World's Fastest Guitar Technique? 3,4,5) #61: Top 3 Easy Shred Licks | How To Start Shredding! 6) #65: The Shred Skill You NEED In Your Life | String Skipping Lesson 7) #39: Biggest Shred Guitar Mistake - How To Fix It! | Hand Synchronization 8) #82 - Shred Exercise For Extreme Picking Progress 9) #31: How To Play Much Faster | Alternate Picking Exercise [Early Access] 10) #70: The Exercise That SOLVED My Biggest Picking Problem

Kris Stengel

Hey Steven, welcome to the community :) I actually always recommend to start with left-hand workouts since that was something I ignored for a very long time - after spending some time with that, it was much easier for me to play quite challenging material! So I really wish I would have started working on that sooner. You can combine that with picking exercises or music theory, anything you want to improve :) You will find a big and diverse archive on here with new lessons added every single week, this is a good place to start in my opinion: https://www.patreon.com/posts/38-finger-you-do-30853257

Bernd Brodträger

Thanks for this! I was just thinking I should write out the various picking exercises I've been using, which are primarily your exercises and ones I've created for myself from your examples. Thanks for helping me to stay focused!

Paul Baglio

Thanks a lot for sharing that Willie, happy to help on your guitar journey :)

Bernd Brodträger

If it wasn't for you and your lessons I would not be progressing the way I have been! Thanks Bernth!!!
