Behind the Scenes of China Uncensored in HK

Hi Patreon supporters! As some of you know, despite my obviously superhuman abilities, I don't produce China Uncensored alone.

Full time, it's only me and my producer Matt. Shelley volunteers a few hours a week. She really is a copy editor—but does way more, and in fact generates lots of good episode ideas and writes some of them too. Allen helps out sometimes a few hours a week, and does graphics and edits some of the more complex episodes (like this one).

In Hong Kong, though, all four of us went together and spent 9 gruelingly awesome days together covering the Umbrella Movement. It was our first trip together. Hopefully not out last.

Thank you for your support!

Behind the Scenes of China Uncensored in HK

Having moved to Hong Kong only a week before the protests broke out, it was a fitting welcome and introduction in so many ways. While some complained about the disruption to traffic or the affect on business, my biggest problem was going into China and trying to share what I had experienced with friends and colleagues. The CCP did a great job of maintaining the status quo. Everyone I spoke with was oblivious, severely misinformed or could care less. Even when I showed photos and video from the protests, they lacked the context to process what they where seeing. It was literally unlike anything they had ever seen before. Hong Kong truly represents the best of what China could be without the CCP. I hope it gets there some day. Thank you for giving us this on-the-ground glimpse of the Movement. Stay well and stay safe.
