#56: Legato VS Alternate Picking | The Better Technique For Playing FAST?

We're finally back to shredding and playing fast - this week we compare legato to alternate picking! Which technique should you focus on? Is one of these approaches better than the other?

In this lesson I do my best to compress all advantages and disadvantages into 10 minutes, I also provided the tabs and guitar pro files of the licks that I played in the video. This time I also uploaded the E minor backing track I recorded, with this one you can give the licks a try or improvise freely.

Which technique do you guys in the community prefer and why? I'd love to know! Maybe you are having some trouble with one of these techniques and I can help with some input :)

Hello Steve, I just recorded a video of the picking motion in closeup in different tempos since there are a lot of questions concerning - hope this one will clear things up a bit more :) We will also discuss economy picking soon, this technique also helps a lot with fast phrases. Legato is also amazing, I agree - but harder than it looks, it's a big focus in my practice routine right now!

With the rapid alternate picking I find I don't know how to hold the pick to get across the strings quickly enough, do you hold your pick slightly differently using this technique? So from this, I guess you can say I prefer Legato , although I am still learning this way of playing too.
