Lick Of The Day #4 - Guthrie Govan #1
Added 2019-01-26 14:50:46 +0000 UTCIt's time to look at two very unique licks by the master Guthrie Govan! The first one we look at in this post is taken from the Aristocrats song 'Bad Asteroid'. Focus on the swing/shuffle rhythm and practice this one with a clean sound to get all the details right. It is much harder than it looks and requires some smooth playing and perfect rhythm to match the original.
I really like the use of motives and chromatic notes in this lick. Motives are short phrases used when you improvise to create a sense of melody and context. They should be catchy and the rest of the band also gets a chance to pick up on these motives. It's a cool way of musical communication! Try that out when you are improvising next times, build small phrases and extend them in dynamics, volume or note range.
