Where do you go to get your fanfic Fix?

For those of you who have been supporting me for a while, you know that I tried to shift Bhaalson Remodel, my HP/GAMER/Baldur's Gate crossover to AO3 because I wanted to add more font changes and so forth. I haven't been able to figure out how, and that's cut into my desire to deal with A03 after getting used to how easy it is to upload things to fanfic. There, all I need to worry about is it sometimes stripping away font changes. On A03 its paragraph spacing, font issues, size issues, and of course the whole summary/chapter segment stuff. And don't get me started on the tagging troubles.

Regardless, I have asked this before, but haven't actually posted a poll asking where people like most to read their fics. if A03 wins overwhelmingly, I may start to take every Sunday to start cross-posting from fanfic over there.

OH!! and if you have some observation or suggestion about how things work here on Patreon, tell me. Either here or via PM. I am always willing to listen and take suggestions even if i don't always act on them.

Comments

I use AO3 primarily. honestly mostly because I like to read smut and they have a lot of it. and I like the tag systems. But I do still use the Fanfiction dot net app for offline usage. AO3 is easy to download EPUBS and use them through my google books. BUT with Fanfiction I can set stories to download and the downloads UPDATE.

B3ast5200

Read primarily through Calibre, since once downloaded then I can read it offline at anytime. Plus, I'll still have a copy if it gets taken down / removed, or if a particular site fails. For that reason, I tend to favor anything other than FFN as a source, since their use of Cloudflare requires a work around for the Calibre plugin that I use. One thing that I particularly like about forums such as SB, SV, and QQ is the friendliness to audience participation both in terms of discussion and omakes.

R Brown

Fanfic app for text to speech ao3 to wander tags qq,sb,sv occasionally if I can’t find on the other sites I’ll read there

Tom smith

I use Patreon for a few stories with short chapters I'm keeping up to date with, ffn and AO3 for anything exclusively on those sites, and royalroad, QQ, SB, and SV most often.

Darth Bayes

Yeah the fanfic app is what I use

vimesenthusiast

I use a bit of everything as far as reading. I like some of the features of AO3 for reading, but as a creative it is actual ass. I mostly use FFN, QQ and RR.

Arkos Sloth

FFN's app has a read aloud function now. It's not perfect, but a potential option if you can't get a file for some reason.

Arkos Sloth

My setup is 1st I use a “fanfiction.net downloader” which gives me a .docx file 2nd I take that file and put it into my Dropbox 3rd I use an app on my phone called Moon+ reader, which takes that file from Dropbox then can read it to me using text-to-speech so I listen to these stories when I go on my every day Walks, so I have a book on tape type of thing going, so at the end of the day if I can get a .docx file I can work with that

link01742

A03, FF.net and Twtisting the Hellmouth mostly. If the author has his/her stories in both A03 and FF.net, I always read them in A03. That is for most authors. In your case, I always read your fics in my own generated .epub files by copying/pasting the source code from Patreon.

lostone2

I go between downloading from patreon for the stuff here, ff.net and ao3. i only read ranma when reading fanfic, so thats generally going to get my my fix outside a few very sporadic sources. much easier than keeping track of individual websites for things waay back.

Gappler

I tend to bounce between TTH (Twisting The Hellmouth), Fanfic, AO3, Sufficient Velocity, SpaceBattles, QQ (Questionable Questing), and fiction.live. It honestly just depends on where the author posts the story I'm trying to read...

LilianaVessFanBoy

I do all 3 although AO3 only when I really have found nothing for quite some time or someone linked me to them.

Southmonk

At least on my tablet, Brave Browser has an Accessibility toggle to increase font size. I use it a lot for just that reason myself. I don't know if the Windows version does, but probably? Might help.

MultiverseCosms

I’m dyslexic so I primarily use the audio readers on the FF and Royal Road apps. I’m not a fan of Patreon because AFAIK, there isn’t a way to increase font size on the ios app and the fonts the authors I’m subscribed to use is usually too small for me to comfortably read. I usually copy the chapter text to an epub then listen with speechify. I seriously appreciate you adding download options to your chapters. I’m not a fan of AO3 because there isn’t an ios app at all, last I checked.

Mattysc42

I use a variety of sites, primarily Ao3, FF, Patreon, and one or two forums. I prefer Ao3 the most, simply because I like the interface more. As a potential writer, I'd definitely prefer Ao3 simply due to the better moderation controls. Being able to limit comments to registered users helps avoid the worst guest reviews from trolls. And you can moderate other reviews too. Not for people being constructively critical, but the GIFT-tastic arses who screech.

MultiverseCosms

I use ff, space battles, sufficient velocity and royal road, with a little bit of Patreon advanced stuff

Darer

I use several. FF.net, AO3, QQ, Patreon. I just want to read stories. I use FF more often mainly because the app has an Audio Reader. I can throw in an earbud and listen to a story while tearing apart a conveyor to replace a part or troubleshoot a burnt out contactor. Love FF, but will read anywhere if I can.

Razgriz0x

I've started to use Questionable Questing.

Pip-Boy

Questionable Questing. Its like Spacebattles/sufficientvelocity, but without the horrible mods.

Devon

Truthfully I use all of the sites for different purposes. I like to be able to download them so that I can read them whenever I want. AO3 is great because it doesn't have the same restrictions as FanFic. But FanFic is great for the fact that I can bookmark my favourite passages and reread them whenever I want.

Braeden1002

I shop around but am mainly on Fanfic.

Salvage48

I use everything, but the pie graph would lean heavily to the Forum Trinity of SB, SV, and QQ: The Father, the Son, and the Horny Spirit.

Sequal

I go ff.net and AO3 both. For re-reading all at once AO3 is great. Reading all chapters combined. Same as 'M B' I hate the over-tags though with you I don't think that will happen. ;) I still love the most that on Patreon we get the original formatted chapters!!! Friend of mine still prefers Scribble Hub, for format, polls one can do, etc.

Hiryo

Eh, as someone who writes under, you know, a different name from this one (still not sure how to change my name into a nick here, but in my defense, I'm 85% blind and finding things is hard for me) my preferences go like this: To find stories -> FFNET. Is it THAT hard to categorize things? Why doesn't AO3 has a fucking index? The search function is awful in AO3 To publish stories -> Ao3. Why can't FFNET update their god awful system and let me set a time and date for publishing new chapters? To track popularity of my stories -> Definitively FFNET. I can see how many people read any story/chapter on any specific date, track traffic flow and so on, stuff that really helps see what people likes as long as you are willing to sort through the data. When it comes to comments -> Ao3. It lets people comment more than one per chapter, and lets me reply to them right there. FFNET 'review' function is broken and no one uses it for reviews anyway.

Christian E. Y.

Mostly Ao3. I use to use FFN and really like the app, but Ao3 is nice as it tags and more ways to filter fics and FFN also has been purged of many good fics multiple times which is annoying. QQ and Spacebattles are good sites too to read off of

Delta105

I prefer Ao3. Nicer layout, more functionality (like filtering being usable on bookmarks and author works pages), easy options for both download/export and "view entire fic" (very useful when about to go on a flight where I will be lacking in internet). Much better filter options as well. Additionally: they are not actively hostile to authors/readers like the owner of FFNet, who has tried repeatedly over the years to make it hard for authors to link to patreons or users to download a copy of a fic. Only problem I have with it is that, due to the lack of limits on tags, a lot of people will over-tag when it comes to characters and relationships, and Ao3 refuses to add a "main characters" and/or "main relationships" section (which would of course be limited) so that you can find fics where your filtered character is the main character and not someone who shows up once in chapter 73. It does mean I have to use a ton of "exclude x/y/z" filters to find fics I am interested in, but since the filters get saved into the URL, I just have my filters pre-configured and click on a bookmark with them saved :D Only limit I found was that, if the URL exceeds 8000-ish characters, it errors out :P

M B

Spinoff was due to moderator/admin drama IIRC. Don't remember any details, but that was the trigger.

M B

Ao3 qq and fanfic and sometimes when I remember it exists fiction.live

Undefinedofs

Mainly Ao3 and FFN

Tyr

On mobile when I need to be hands free, or for the authors I follow it's FFN. If I can use a PC or don't need an AI audio reading, then it's 50/50 between here and Ao3. That said, I dislike how fine tuned I need to make the filters on Ao3 just to find stories I like this century.

MacArther

It means Sufficient Velocity

Anthony Apodaca

I use Ao3, SB, SV, Scribblehub, QQ, Webnovel, and sometimes Twisting the Hellmouth. Each one has different things on them and different authors.

Starfall20

Ehhhh. RR has some really good stuff on it. Many a time though stuff on RR will go to Amazon. So that can be annoying.

Starfall20

Sorry about that, got to this before that one. I'm so happy

Heroville111

Check what I said in he patron only poll response. I am taking today and a portion of tomorrow to hopefully finish going through 53. I hope to take February to go through the other chapters

vimesenthusiast

Royal Roads, SpaceBattles, Questionnable Questing, Fanfiction.net, AO3. I have quite a few sources. At one point i even followed a writer from FF to Wattpad when the Purge happened

Wrandral

Sufficient velocity. It's a spin off from spacebattles, but I can't recall what the cause for the spin off was or what the difference is

FitzThrawn

Yep. It's not perfect but works well enough when I just want a refresher on the story. Though it has skipped or mixed paragraphs up a few times so it could be better.

Petteri Antikainen

Every time I opened AO3 it manages to piss me off for some reason or other. I honestly opted for downloading the whole story to a txt than reading it there :-D And even getting to the story in the first place was very annoying. Even with all the fanfic issues I prefer it A LOT. Alternative being downloading the stories directly, or reading here on site.

Tomon

Huh… ithouht royal road was more for light novels and stuff

vimesenthusiast

Do you use the fanfic app for that? I have been doing so lately.

vimesenthusiast

SV? Space battle, questionable questing, and scrihub I know, but SV is a new acronym

vimesenthusiast

I also use royal roads app for some other fics. So yeah

Elliote Elanor

Yeah, ffnet is my first choice mostly for the app, and I use AO3 to follow the authors thatve left ffnet in disgust and to find new fics.

FormVIEnthusiast

To tell the truth I like the downloads, but for other platforms is usually: AO3, search and read; Fanfic, read if already is found and know is good so I can read calmly in the APP xD

Érica C. Assunção

I just kind of read on all three platforms. No real preference on which.

HP-DG-AP-PN-RG-NR

my reading is on SB SV QQ AO3 FFnet and scrihub. though most of my fics are on ao3 due to the ease of dling them for later.

Kyo Amamoto

That is a good question. I tend to use whatever the story is on but the I also like to listen to stories I have already read with text-to-speech while going to/from work. Otherwise AO3 has been on the rise for me lately.

Petteri Antikainen

Royal Road is also where I go to get my fix, but Space Battles and Sufficient Velocity are also two of the main sites I use.

Matt

All three, depends on the story and author

Christian Jeffress

All the above and then some

Empress of Iron

None of the above. While I still occasionally read on FF, for a few years now I've been reading on Forums. Sufficient Velocity, SpaceBattle, and Questionable Questing. There's also Royal Road for original fiction.

zagan

Honestly depends on what I'm reading. HP is mostly fanfic/A03, Worm is SB/SB/A03, and the other fandoms are wherever I find them.

FitzThrawn

Ive seen people have issues with posting to Ao3 before and idgi LOL. I always found it really easy. Ff.net is WAY more of a pain in the ass. It will just outright delete words if it thinks theres a link which is annoying AF and it even started killing my chapter breaks which is infuriating. If you need help hit me up on discord and ill show you what i do.

Primordial Vortex

I use both AO3 and ff.net. I use app for ff.net. AO3 is a great backup for all the times ff.net is down.

Questara

I check most of the bigs ones for fics. FF.net, AO3 for smut mostly tbh, QQ is a main for me. Royal Road on occasion. As well as Scribble Hub sometimes.

DemonRight27

Maybe this helps. https://archiveofourown.org/works/40868577

Tim Rieger

I wish I could pick 2, as I 99% of the time use ff.net, but for yourbstuff I use patreon and then there's like 1 or 2 stories on ao3 that I like, but otherwise I never go near that one

LoweredUp

Qq is the best. Pictures and info threads help especially for longer series where you forget who's who after a while. Ff is probably the worst site and app now, every year it gets worsen a bit more, never fixed or updated imo.

JustDK

I am on either fanfic, royal road or questionable questing so far

Ghostviper

I use all three. The few that are on Patreon are the ones I look forward to the most, though.

Aragorn93

Ff.net is where I have a account so it's where I check for updates that aren't on RR if it's a author I don't follow on Patreon.

Netveiwer

Ah OK not sure what to vote. My eyesight it terrible so I download to have text to speech, read it to me but that can be done from any of the sites.....so mines the 4 choice, whichever you prefer?

Laura Perry

I know you probably get this alot but I have been rereading through A Third Path to the Future. It is one of my all time favorites for any fanfiction and I have read thousands. A you willing to put it back into the polls this upcoming year as I would love to see it finished? Much love ❤️ @vimesenthusiast

Heroville111

i read story on where they are fanfic or ao3 but the amount of tag spam on ao3 is annoying or large crossover spam tags but does ao3 not have rulles on asking money with patreon ?

frank schellingerhout

I bounce between both honestly. Thanks to the app, fanfic is MUCH easier to navigate or look at than on the web. But the tag system is very nice when looking for something specific.

UHDNRT

i personally use all 3, i vastly prefer FF.net ebcause it's much easier to sort through all the garbage to find what i'm looking for, but i've been branching out into AO3 becuase there's good stories there that aren't on FF.net

Delphinous

I'm mostly on Sb,Sv, Qq and such myself
