The problem with Heroes is that it's an MHA crossover. MHA does not seem to be popular at all with this community as far as I can tell. And Vimes is one of the ones pushing for regular updates the most. HP or Ranma stories are just plain more popular. And as for this story specifically, it's not joining the rotation right away. Filfy Teacher needs to finish, as does Making Waves. After that, I don't know what's going to be added to the regular story polls for voting on.

2025-01-04 02:32:00 +0000 UTCWent back in my one free hour today and made corrections. Expanded time between London and the Open ocean. Mentioned Irish Sea, Celtic Sea. Expanded the time spent going around Scotland to several weeks, gave some more geographic features. Had two heavy squalls nearly finish Harry. Had the Trawler tow the Bonaventure into port that day, with Harry working on the ship the rest of the fishing season. Mentioned it again, then more later. Had Harry mention a need to come up with a spell to watch the ship. Had him talk about just sailing along the coastline. Not all his problems will be easy to solve. Hope that helps.

2025-01-04 01:27:38 +0000 UTCAlso ^_^ - People don't get from boat to boat at sea, unless in desperate situations. Boats don't even get that close to each other, two boats really close can create a depression in the waves that is likely to smash them together. If they had too they'd stay apart and throw lines, to zip down or climb up. Or use a dinghy to get close and get tied to a line and pulled up. But mostly would avoid it if at all possible even in calm seas. Harbour pilots only do it in harbours, and it's still one of the most dangerous job there is because of it. - Towing any ship at sea is very difficult. And dangerous. And it's a full time job for any crew. Doing it with a vessel designed to do it (like search and rescue ships, some patrol boats, tugboats...) and with the right equipment set up properly to try and spread the load better, it would still affect maneuverability greatly and there is an increased risk of capsizing for both ships. The forces involved are insane, and a line snapping can be deadly to any crew too close - at least for the crew doing the towing, not sure if the forces also backlash on the side of the ship being towed but my gut tells me probably?) To avoid the line being too taunt or too slack, both ships must be kept at a certain distance and speed which is constantly calculated based on both ships lengths, their mass (or their displacement perhaps), the strength and directions of the waves, and in some cases the wind. Which means it can vary with the conditions, and is also difficult to maintain (because remember, impaired maneuverability and unbalanced propulsion). It's still possible on a non-specialized ship. But likely more difficult to balance the load. And the propulsion is likely to be far less flexible, so more affected and struggling more to react. And the equipment for the line might not be meant to absorb and reduce the range of a potential backlash as much. So... There is only one thing to be done with a ship in tow, heading straight back to port. That's hard enough to do, no ship would even consider carrying on doing what they were doing. Much less for an entire season, sorry... Damn I know I went into a lot of details in what seemed the most impossible to me, but I swear I still enjoyed the story anyway haha

2025-01-03 06:13:39 +0000 UTCVery interesting premise, and lots of interesting ideas with it. I like the way he is figuring out his magic and the original ideas built around that. Hogwarts starting later, as well as the occasional brushing with the wizarding world without getting involved in it. I like the general atmosphere, the goals and directions he is trying to take... But despite his best efforts he is still dreadfully unprepared and while you avoid the romantic life at sea that is always smooth sailing, you're still greatly underestimating how harsh, difficult and dangerous it can be. So i'm regularly thinking "oh no, there is no way that would work", "oh why is he trying to do that, he is already in a tight enough spot", "oh that's not physically possible", "oh with magic no way he could survive that" etc. - Geography first, London isn't a coastal city. Yes, one of the biggest seaport in the world isn't actually on the sea, it's hilarious. Cargo ships have to go up the Thames a fair bit, and they stop east of London to the Port of London, the modern industrial port. Which is just east of the old London Docks you mentioned (themselves on the east of the city center) that are now mostly high-end residential or offices areas, luxury marinas... There is maybe 30 miles between the city center of London and the shore, so you'll leave that skyline behind before getting to the North Sea, though you'll have the lights of other small towns along the banks of the Thames and the shores after. I'd say about as much distance roughly going down the Thames and the Wey to get to London in the first place. Boats are sloooow, the 20 feet boat at sea can do 6 knots in good conditions. Not much more without the sail ripped off or the mast falling. On a river, not too sure perhaps a bit more but there is a lot more of twist of turns too. So that part of the journey is already probably several days. The boat's speed is mostly capped by it's length, so the new upgraded version could possibly do 7-7.5 knots. Better, but yeah boats are still slow. - You mention Oceans a lot, but from an European perspective there is only one ocean nearby and it's on the other side of the country. I know that from an American perspective most coasts = ocean, whether east or west. But the North Sea, the Baltic Sea, the Mediterranean Sea, they're definitely huge bodies of water. The North Sea is known to be choppy and stormy in some seasons. But none of that can compare to the mind-boggling immensity that the Atlantic Ocean is, which for a long time seemed without end and meant almost certain death if your ship had the misfortune to be pushed away from coastal waters. That's why it deserved a completely different word, and comparing the North Sea to the Ocean feels a bit like comparing a Lake to the Sea. - More about going out to sea, even though i'm not a specialist. Nothing is ever perfectly safe, sailing at sea certainly isn't. With a crew, it can be made relatively safe. Solo sailing never is. Most who do it are quite aware that they aren't good examples of safety at sea, and the few who aren't are quite deluded. But it's a passion so they do it anyway and can only mitigate the risks, but with equivalent experience I'd say being a stunt performer is safer than sailing alone. Even when anchored by the shore on the Mediterranean, we were told that if we slept on the boat it was recommended to keep a watch. But alone you can't take turns to set up a watch. So you already have to compromise with some of the most basic rules of safety, because getting more and more exhausted, sluggish, and poor decision making aren't safe either. Some sleep is needed, some people go for waking up at 20 mins intervals when they can while others let the boat unattended for up to 1h30-2h. Never heard of longer but it's still hoping for the best every night. Beyond rest, when in a tight spot you can't keep track of navigation, stay at the wheel, handle the sails, and check/fix problems. You prioritize, but it all adds up. An experienced hand can usually manage, but even for them not always. An inexperienced child, even with magic? No way. His magic helps with his health, recovering from injuries, avoiding getting sick, resisting fatigue... And it helps mitigate difficult sea conditions. I wondered if triangulation with point-me spells could help greatly with navigation and some of his lacking equipment, but magic doesn't cross the water, so... he is not navigating at all. Going offshore once was already suicide, making it back to shore a miracle. Doing it again, surviving again during a storm? Then doing it day after day? Impossible. Sticking to coastal sailing I'd give him a 50/50 chance of making it and learning the basics quickly. Just rough seas and changing winds are challenging enough. Offshore? Without visual cues, he could very well not sea the shore again for days, if at all. And never know which shore. A sailing boat with always turn with the wind and he can keep that in check with the compass but that still gives him only a heading. The boat can point in the direction he thinks he needs but if he doesn't know where he is, how fast he is going, it doesn't help him getting back to shore. Sometimes with little wind you can't even tell if you're staying still or moving backward. He could be drifting sideways and never know. Honestly once if loses sight of the coast, without navigation he is as likely of getting back to England as he is to end up in Germany or Norway if he survives that long to get there. Or to end up missing Scotland entirely after weeks of drifting, thinking he is trying to get back North West and keep venturing into the Atlantic. Doing it once is reckless enough, but doing it twice? And still not catching up to the danger of sailing completely blind, you can't last long at sea. He should instead get a big scare, go back to shore and get more experience on other vessels like he did on the fishing boat that picked him up. It doesn't transfer to sailing, but at least to life at sea. And they need to teach him navigation and safe decision making before he ventures more.

2025-01-01 11:23:48 +0000 UTCHappy 2025!!! Going to France and becoming friends with Fleur seems a bit too cliche, alternatively he could bond with Gabriel and her calling him big brother could trigger Fleur's jealousy? Since wizards have trouble at sea, I think it wouldn't be strange to find an abandoned magical pirate island full of traps and treasure. In Africa, they teach wandless magic so if Harry went up the Congo River, maybe he could find their school near it. I'm not a fan of the Patil twins pairing because then you'd have to deal with the magical Indian culture and considering the English colonization... I think it's a country worth visiting to learn parselmagic, given its applications in medicine maybe Harry could try to figure out how to heal Astoria and Nevil's parents.

2025-01-01 10:04:44 +0000 UTCGood stuff. I look forward to when this one cycles in. One thing, while on the first trawler they call his boat the "freedom" but the rest of the time they call it the "Bonaventure". Was that a misdirection or a mistake?

2025-01-01 08:49:39 +0000 UTCHeh, you know, that's gotta be one of the most realistic and down to earth ways I've come across in recent memory for how Harry could find and learn to use his magic by himself, as well as a plausible (if somewhat singularly focused) explanation for him running away. Overall, a truly enjoyable little teaser that I'm already eager to read more of. The only problem I have with this story so far is the lack of consistency when it comes to Harry's ship's name. It kinda bounced between 'Bonaventure' and 'Freedom' towards the end there. Might wanna look into that.

2025-01-01 07:55:36 +0000 UTCHope you're having a great new years man, this was an amazing holiday gift! I can honestly say that Harry Sawyer was in my top two picks out of all of your fic ideas, only beaten out by that Ranma/HP crossover you brainstormed a while back. Keep up the great work, and I'm looking forward to all the chapters in this coming year!

2025-01-01 05:53:15 +0000 UTC... great, another fic that will steal all the votes from Heroes if the High Seas by dint of being a HP fic, giving real mixed messages here vimes, this kinda makes it feel like you dont want to write Heroes. anyways now that those initial thoughts are out of my mind, I do get that the muse does as it wishes, but its still real disheartning to see a new HP fic, since those tend to overwhelm any other fic you have in your polls (same's true for the Ranma fics btw, though I'm slightly less bothered about that one because I'm a Ranma fan, still bummed out about it tho), I was really hoping that, with some HP fics, and MW, about to finish Heroes would get a better chance to win the polls sorry about my negativity here just had to vent a bit, and from the little i've read, its a somewhat interesting premise, its just, HP aint for me.

2025-01-01 05:19:55 +0000 UTCI like Hermione, but... I don't know if this is the fic for them to be best friends or love interests. I have a way to introduce Harry to the Grangers, but if that means they get romantically involved is up in the air. I think I will let that aspect solve itself. I am thinking of Padma and Parvati myself. Daphne... maybe? Probably not. Egypt isn't going to happen. France, Portgual, the Rock of Gibraltar, Africa, pirates, and India.

2025-01-01 04:45:55 +0000 UTCOh, this is utterly wonderful! I hope you continue this after finishing other stories! I could see Harry going 'round France, ending up in a port and meeting Fleur. Possibly meet someone fun in Egypt, like Bill for learning more magic, or such! You mentioned parings; I'd be fine with anyone other than Hermione. Fleur would be fun, as would some Slytherin he meets vacationing, like Daphne, Pansy, or such. Slytherin Harry is always fun, and as bold as he is, this Harry is an AMBITIOUS bugger. :-)
