On Ending Fics and the Future:
Added 2024-11-11 19:14:38 +0000 UTCFirst of all folks, a brief announcement: I don't get notifications of replies to my replies. So if you have responded and asked me a question or something, let me know to look for it.
With that out of the way, like I said in the HP winner post, I have seen the responses over on the December Format poll. Remember that’s a weighted poll, so I don’t know who’s winning even if it might seem that the votes for the current format is ahead.
However, I wanted to address a few points that were raised by those who took the time to do more than vote and left me responses. Love seeing such. Four of those responses were about, as Arkos Sloth put it, my having too many plates in the air, and how I should focus on the fics closest to completion. Others, on the other hand, want to see me go back to some of the fics that have been put on the back burner or cancelled.
For those who do not know, or would like a refresher, those stories closest to being finished are Making Waves and FILFY Teacher. The Ranma/Fairy Tail crossover is within three to four chapters or so of being finished. FILFy, the HP/DxD merging fanfic, is five chapters or so chapters away from ending, depending on the size of the chapters and how large an epilogue I do.
Here is also where I apologize again. Real Life (becoming an uncle, helping to set up the house, dealing with issues with my own and everything else there) really cut into the time I could spend on my fics, and pushed FILFy in several different ways, to the point where I have scenes written for the next two chapters in that fic and struggled to get it out in three months rather than when I wanted to. UGH.
Of the two fics, I could see myself knocking off Making Waves, if I concentrate solely on it as my fourth fic a month, by February. Depending on how February goes, anyway. Short ass month is always weird. I won’t deny that would be nice. I have enjoyed working in the Fairy Tail universe, but it is time to end that story and move on.
However, there are other ways to cut down on the number of plates (fics) I have in the air. I could cancel Heroes, as, while it has it’s vocal fans (me among them LOL) , the fic’s never won without the carry over effect. The same goes – including the vocal fans (again me)– for Bhaalson Remodel. I would hate that, but I could do it. I could also cut out GDWHOM, as it doesn’t do very well when matched up against Stallion and even loses to Effect of a Horse and a Dragon. This would cut the HP and Ranma only polls to two choices each, meaning that each fic would have a better chance of getting updated several times in a row. What do you all think of the three-fic rotation? Is it working for those six fics?
I could create a fourth poll every month for those stories, FILFy and MW. That way everything could have a chance to be updated. I could go with the idea of removing one poll each month to update MW/FILFy until they’re done. And of course, there’s editing the final chapters of ATP to consider.
So you all tell me what you think. This isn’t a poll. I’m not going to promise to go with a specific choice. This is just a place for you all to tell me what you think. If you think I’m trying to hard to please everyone, tell me. If you don’t care about anything but one specific story, tell me. If you have suggestions, tell me. If you dislike the fact I keep on changing stuff, tell me. Let it all out, and let’s see where we go from here.
Comments
Third path is finished here on patreon. I am just unhappy with the final three fights scenes and the setting in the thor/Harry fight. I have only recently begun to edit those chapters on my own, and unfortunately for me, editing takes even longer than writing a chapter in the first place.

2025-01-14 03:52:39 +0000 UTCI probably should have clarified my statement: I'm just frustrated it seems to fall to the wayside so much. Bhaalson is the only one I can't get into (so..much...lore, and not enough interest on my part), all the other stories I'm up to date or 1 chapter removed from up to date in terms of reading.

2024-12-01 19:42:09 +0000 UTCI don't do snippets. Not really. Closest I can do to small chapters would be like the story outlines. I don't think thread based writing sites are as welcoming to giant chapters like i put out.

2024-12-01 17:38:52 +0000 UTCI honestly think its continually in third place for a few reasons: Mass Effect is a MUCH larger universe to play with, and the enemies in it are bigger and tougher. Stallion is a more established story by a wide margin, and OP is way more pupular than DxD. And finally, even in comparison to FILFy, GDWHOM loses because of the scope of FILFy.

2024-12-01 17:36:43 +0000 UTCThe current format seems to work. It gives the less popular a chance to update eventually with the carry over. I've enjoyed all your stories, so whichever one updates is nice to see even if I might be looking forward to specific ones a bit more.

2024-11-13 14:49:27 +0000 UTCI would just keep things the way they are. The vote system does work to keep a nice variety of stories coming. Then if necessary revisit the question in a year with poll dedicated to the question of focusing on a certain story to get it to completion.

2024-11-13 04:27:48 +0000 UTCI'm fairly sure ATP is finished unless I missed something

2024-11-12 20:33:58 +0000 UTCATP is not finished yet, is it?

2024-11-12 17:21:08 +0000 UTCI think the current set up it is fine, just when you mention being close to finishing a story I like the idea of freeing up a slot so some of the other active stories will get more attention or my favorite nonactive story (DC Rama) will get added to the cue. As for droping anything from the vote, I'd go with the 4th vote being the 2 stories closest to finishing first since once they are out of the picture the vote spread may change. Or just leaving things the way they are, no need to fix what isn't broken. I tend to have 2 stories in every vote I want to win, and the third I don't mind winning so no problems here.

2024-11-12 14:39:32 +0000 UTCgasp. gdwhom. noooo.. i love that and effect and stallion. they are my three main fics i follow while im waiting for making waves/filfy to finish to do a re read of them :O

2024-11-12 09:40:16 +0000 UTCMy opinion is still the same from the poll questionnaire. Filfy and MW are the closest to finishing. I don't know how feasible it is to work on both in the same month. I wouldn't want to go months without a Filfy chapter, but if it lets you concentrate on MW and complete it, I could survive lol. As for other fics, despite making a real attempt at getting into it, BR couldn't drag me into the story as some of your others have, so I'd be for that getting put on the back burner for now. GDWHOM is hit or miss for me, I tend to want to let a few chapters build up for it before going back. And I think Moku said it best earlier, cannon OP is entering the endgame, give it the time to get closer to finishing up and bring back Heroes later on. Keep Stallion as the only active OP story for now. I do like the Heroes premise, but MHA/OP is a tough crossover to get into. For the current active stories you've got going, I keep track of Fate, DA, KoC, Filfy, MW, Stallion. And you've got 12 active currently, I believe. Those previous 6, plus: Climbing, Magic, BR, GDWHOM, HEROES, Effect... That's a lot of active stories. Might help you if you cut a few out for now, because besides Filfy and MW, I don't honestly know if you have anything else that's even relatively close to being done, active or currently on the back burner.

2024-11-12 04:07:21 +0000 UTCI'll readily admit to being a more "mainstream media" person on fics...I didn't get into Bhaalson at all. Heroes and the others are fine, I just feel frustrated every time I vote for GDWHOM and see that here and FF it is in last place for some reason.

2024-11-12 03:04:42 +0000 UTCI love bhaalson and wouldn’t want you to permanently cancel it but a pause on it while you finish up filfy would be great

2024-11-12 01:31:35 +0000 UTCFirst I just want to say your writing style and creativity is amazing and enjoy reading most of if not all your Fics ( a few I haven't had the time to really sit down and get into.) I'm not a fan of writers I enjoy limiting their creativity, but having so many different stories in so many different settings can't be easy to jump back and forth from. Maybe a slight middle ground could be found? Take the stories that at current are less popular and set them back a bit finish off the stories close to being finished than move them back in the polls. This could then allow readers who are invested in the close to finished stories to then move onto these new stories.

2024-11-12 00:52:06 +0000 UTCFrom a creative's perspective? You do You. Write what you want to write, else there's always a danger of losing something from the end product. From the perspective of collecting data from your fan base to help make decisions easier? FILFy, Third Path and Warrior's Way brought me here. As the latter two suggest, finishing stories is powerful in and of itself, so more support for FILFy until it's done. I've always personally hoped you'd take up an kooky!Harry HP v Mass Effect crossover at some point since other authors never seem to finish those, but I can't say I'd personally lose anything along the way if any of the Ranma titles went into hiatus. Regardless, love your work.
Jonathan Davis
2024-11-12 00:36:47 +0000 UTCI would say to not cancel or put on hiatus a fic unless you feel like you cannot write for it. I real!y hope ypu don't do so for Heroes/BR, as I adore them, but I wouldn't want that for the fics I don't really follow either. Current method is fine, IMO.
MultiverseCosms
2024-11-11 22:23:22 +0000 UTCDo you _want_ to have fewer active stories? That seems like the most important question and I don't think you addressed it in your post. (Also, do you think it would make it easier/harder to write?) On sites like Spacebattles and QQ, snippet threads are common. Do you have any desire for one? I'd be happy with that.
Darth Bayes
2024-11-11 20:41:24 +0000 UTCYou actually have 10 active stories going right now. I would vote for one of the 2 closest to completion stories get updated every other month as the automatic patron winner. Last month it was FILFy. November would be a normal poll month including the carry over effect buy without those 2 stories. December would be automatically MW. January would again e normal polls and February would be automatically FILFy. That way the months with the auto winners you would be able to work on them quickly but every thing else would still get updates. I think you could finish both stories by June then.
Jeffrey Smith
2024-11-11 20:20:40 +0000 UTCHonestly, as interesting a concept as Heroes is, it might be better to shelve it for now, while focusing on Stallion as your One Piece fic. Let it and canon run its course, and then dust the story off later with the full benefit of a completed, or nearly complete One Piece. One Piece is in its end game, and Heroes has just barely scratched the surface of its OP side, so it's still a fairly blank slate. That should buy time for other fics. There are other fics that you could probably shelve if you need to, then pick back up as priority stories end, but Heroes is the one that's in something of a unique scenario, with one of its mother series having already ended, and the other projected to wrap up at some point over the next few years.
Moku
2024-11-11 20:06:35 +0000 UTCI'm of the opinion of keeping it as is. Tbh I'm just happy that any fic gets updated. But please don't let yourself get sucked into the oh must finished XYZ and impact your health and cause burnout
Ranma_Leopard
2024-11-11 20:05:38 +0000 UTCI'm one of those who doesn't follow Bhaalson, and Heroes. I never managed to like Bhaalson even though I played and finished BG 1 and 2, probably because I played them when they came out more than twenty years ago. I've never gotten into Heroes, BNHA is not one of my favorite fandoms. So if you put these two to rest and finish the others I wouldn't mind at all. Different speech for GDWHOM I like it a lot I think it has a great potential, it's my favorite fic after FILFy, but if you put it aside to finish FILFy and MW, I'll be sorry but I can accept it.
Diego D'Andrea
2024-11-11 20:03:43 +0000 UTCWhile I can see the appeal of finishing those stories close to their end I am 100% against the idea that you should drop the lower performing stories (Bhaalson and GDWHOM). I think that a six story system works great. Though as someone who has read and enjoyed every story you are currently working on, I can understand my position of being fairly happy regardless of what gets updated as a little unique. I do however think that you shouldn't give up the stories you enjoy/are excited to write to focus on other projects. That sounds like a recipe for burnout and hating your art which would just be sad I will just re-iterate my position from the last post where a fourth poll is added for the stories closest to finishing and it become the only consistent poll. the other three polls would then rotate (IE patron+ranma->ranma+HP->HP+Patron and repeat) until those stories about to end are closed out. At that point you can revisit the idea of either sunsetting those slots completely, or picking up two of the stories that are currently backburner stories
Cormag81
2024-11-11 19:59:57 +0000 UTCKeep it as is imo, a lot of writers suffer from writers block and you seem to be one where writing different stories over a period of time is better for you. Ie don't screw with what works, if you wish to try, after finishing filfy and waves you can then try to not add any more stories and see if it works or not. Or temporarily pause one or more of the less popular stories to finish the 2 stories and see if it works or not. Regardless thanks for the stories, and as long as you're having fun!

2024-11-11 19:53:16 +0000 UTCIn general, I like the polls as they are. But, since you’re asking for input… I’m making some assumptions/guesses about what is feasible so I’m assuming four “writing slots”/month generally. So my recommendation is writing slot one has no poll and is a rotation amongst all the stories within an arbitrary reach of being finished (maybe within 5 chapters). Any story that hits that point moves into that rotation and out of all polls. Slot 2&3 would be HP/Ranma voting however you’d like them organized. Slot 4 would be the Patreon special and would be whatever stories you feel some motivation for but aren’t sure what to pick and aren’t included in the other three slots. If Slot 1 gets cleared out by some twist of fate then everything shifts down until some other story nears completion. Just an opinion. You could post the schedule for Slot 1 so people know what to expect in addition to the polls. Anyway, I’m just happy you still have time to write and hope that continues far into the future.
Sisyphus
2024-11-11 19:53:04 +0000 UTCI honestly think you might be trying juggle to many stories at once, so they all kinda suffer for it. I think focusing a bit more on the stories close to finishing would be best. With those out of the way, you’d have more breathing room for your other stories. I’d love for Heroes, Death’s Avenger and Fate Touched get more attention without the big hitters looming in the background. I also really hope you don’t cancel Heroes. I recently got caught up on it and greatly enjoy it; and, would love to see where you take it.
Armando Miranda
2024-11-11 19:41:12 +0000 UTCI feel like your update schedule is great for how many stories you have in the works and the size of them. Wouldn’t like to see any of them canceled but maybe a rotation where each one is getting updated every 3 or 4 month vs going off votes? I think that might help but I enjoy all your works so I’m happy whenever I see an upload!
Connor A
2024-11-11 19:38:40 +0000 UTCI can see why people are saying that they'd like a quicker turn around on the stories they enjoy - and if that's what you'd like to do, go for it! Especially if you feel at risk of burnout. - But I love some of your less voted for stories, like Bhalson and GDWHOM, and joined here for those and FILFY, so I hope that even if they are removed from your current story polls, that they'd be added back in once whichever category they are in has a free slot. If you decide to remove them at present time, of course. On that note, please don't remove them XD
Victoria Steel
2024-11-11 19:37:17 +0000 UTCHonestly, I would say prioritize what is closest to completion first. Once that is done you can rotate two stories each month per Fandom so everything has a good chance of being updated. Release the occasional teaser for other fics you have in the pipeline as those wind down. I'd hate for you to outright cancel a fic. Effect took forever to come back into the rotation, and I don't want to see that happen again if it can be avoided. But do whatever fits your IRL needs first, please. I don't want to see you burn out. Thanks for taking the time to let us discuss this, and for all your fantastic work as usual.
Arkos Sloth
2024-11-11 19:36:27 +0000 UTCI'm interested in all of your stories. There are some of them that I'm less interested in though, and I've fallen so far behind i might as well start over, which makes me hesitant to want to start. Death's Avenger falls into this category, as does Climbing Together. Stallion is by far my favorite of your stories, followed at the moment by Heroes. The first story of yours that i got into was ATP. I don't think that was ever finished, but surprisingly, to me, I'm not disappointed because I have Stallion and Heroes. I like that you keep updating so many of your stories. I would like that to continue, but your health and happiness should take precedence. If having this many stories is causing you to burn out, then maybe you should cut back. If not, keep going because I love what you're doing.
Aragorn93
2024-11-11 19:35:03 +0000 UTCWhile I'd hate to lose Bhaalson, Heroes, and GDWHOM, even temporarily, it might be best if they get put on the backburner for the fics with more support. Plus if the muse strikes you could always work on them and buildup chapters. I'd love to have FILFy and MW completed so I can read them through from start to finish. In the end, as long as you take care of yourself and avoid burnout, I'm good with however it ends up.
Benjamin Bravo
2024-11-11 19:32:32 +0000 UTCAnd along those lines - if there are two fics close to ending, and it's possible to get them "done" sooner rather than later to clear up the queue, it might be helpful for the rest of the stories.
Paultagoras
2024-11-11 19:31:51 +0000 UTCIf they're just being put on pause to let you finish FILFy and MW, I'd say put them on hold. Then again I'm a fan of Making Waves....
Tim Nope
2024-11-11 19:30:59 +0000 UTCI'll just give my perspective (for what it's worth) - I only read the HP crossovers, anything beyond that I tend to ignore. I do really wish I got more consistent updates - I understand the idea behind the polls, but stories like Bhaalson almost never win (even with the carryover) though I wish it did (like the recent result!). If you just had an "Update This -> Then This -> Then This -> etc..." schedule we'd at least know when to hope for something. If there are too many stories to put into rotation, that should say something...
Paultagoras
2024-11-11 19:28:34 +0000 UTCId recommend you write what you find joy in writing, altho i am biased to stallion xD love most of ur fics anyways
Elliote Elanor
2024-11-11 19:25:59 +0000 UTCStallion was definitely how I became your fan and is the one I care about most, but you carry you ability into all your stories and I’ve liked them all so far. I do think it’s rough to see one chapter every couple months, although chapter has a different meaning to you over most web authors. It might be better to focus on a run for one or two stories to get some serious content out, like an ‘arc’, and then cycle. But I also don’t know how your release style feeds into your creativity or avoiding burnout. Quality comes first in my book, as long as your readership isn’t dropping too much. Whichever way it ends up, I’ll be here.
Gessen
2024-11-11 19:23:01 +0000 UTCOne the one hand, I really enjoy Heroes - as well as the potential directions it could go in! Buuuut I also understand the premise behind lowering your workload to prioritize those fics closest to completion.. At the end of the day I don't have any concrete suggestions, your writing-pace has always astounded me. Maybe roll a dice, and leave the decision to chance??
DarthGhengis
2024-11-11 19:22:28 +0000 UTCI would say never outright cancel a fic but if you feel you need to pause voting on a storyline for time management that it's probably a good idea. I love Bhaalson and would hate to see it go permanently but a pause or deferment until FILFY was completed would be better.
