"Ah! Fuck."
One of the mistakes Dai Jin didn't realize was how disadvantaged he would be against a long-ranged weapon such as a sword. He could switch back to the Knife but he would still be in a bad position. Also, he won the first round by using all the tricks he learned so far which the opponent became aware of by the second round.
That was the thing with the Named Enemies, they can become quite troublesome as they learn from their mistakes. The first round is enough to brute force them down without showing off too much and one can use all the tricks in the next round but when it comes to a troublesome opponent from the first round, things get haywire the next round.
Dai Jin received a painful sword slash to his chest which caused him to lose a significant amount of stamina and become much slower. His only solution was to retreat in front of every attack thrown at him until he finds an opening.
This Snitch guy was truly tricky. The sword he used was a longsword with a straight single edge and no crossguard whatsoever. It is more like an assassin sword rather than an actual sword and it was good at both swinging, stabbing and making a mix of both.
One thing Dai Jin noticed is that at a certain distance from Snitch, he starts going for big strikes which leaves him open for a second. This was the only available window of opportunity he found so far.
After avoiding the big strike, the first attack Dai Jin landed in a while was intended to break his opponent's stance through a punch, the second attack was to disturb his pace by following on directly with another big attack. Now that the opponent lost his momentum completely, Dai Jin's next move was a simple and innocent body drop while fully disarming his opponents and… left, right, left, right, left, right.
< You Won! >
And that was a hard-earned victory. Dai Jin took a deep breath but he noticed that the opponent under him hadn't disappeared yet.
"Please… please don't kill me!" Snitch raised his arms covering his face and cowered on the ground.
"The hell?" Dai Jin, who has already recovered because the match has ended, took his distance but remained on guard.
"You… you want to take down Viper and the Guild, right? I don't like them that much so if you spare me, I'll tell you about the best way to bring them down."
"Yeah, whatever." Dai Jin responded anyway.
"Listen, there is a place on this map where a treasure was hidden. It is guarded by a strong Shadow Fiend. Rumor has it that this sword belonged to the Headsman of the previous local Lord. The Headsman used to execute those damn Thieves on sight the moment they are caught so he is kind of a menace to them. If you have that sword while fighting those thieves, it will give you an advantage over them. More to that, the sword belongs to a larger collection, find them all you will absolutely crush the Guild."
< You have acquired information about the "Headsman Set", equipment sets are very powerful and have certain advantages against certain opponents and they strengthen each other as well. >
< Objective: Gather the Headman Set pieces across the Valley of Thieves. (0/3) >
< Objective is only available in Survival Mode. >
< A Clue has been added to the Temple! >
Dai Jin stood frozen in front of the messages but deep down, he was as excited as a monkey in the banana market.
"An Equipment set? This is ridiculous. System, will the Effect of the Set apply to the Real World as well?"
< System Tip: Equipment Sets has two effects. An effect of each item and an effect of the items combined together. Both effects are fictional in the Real World. >
"Damn! This is broken."
An Equipment Set used in the outside world would boost him a few ranks above the ordinary. That's the purpose of the Equipment Sets in any game to begin with.
< Congratulations! You have defeated the Secret Challenger and obtained his Weapon! >
"Huh? Where?"
Dai Jin looked around to find that snitch guy long since gone and his sword lying around the ground. Dai Jin didn't need to think twice before picking it up.
< You have obtained "Lv.3 Long Blade"! >
"Fuck yes."
< Returning to Survival Mode! >
Dai Jin was pulled back to Survival Mode with his new sword in his hand which he couldn't use because of the level restriction.
"Still, I am loving its appearance."
Different than the Knife and the Knuckles, the sword was an actual and a practical combat Weapon which could be utilized against many opponents. Dai Jin knew a little about swords to begin with but he decided to use it the way it was intended to be used, slice and stab.
No matter how terrible this sword was, it was the first one he ever wielded and the one which will open his way to the path of swordsmanship and the other four main weapons.
***
Each survival has to end with a disaster. Dai Jin has experienced death yet again after venturing a bit deeper into the Valley of Thieves this time. A Lv.5 Shadow Fiend simply appeared, jumped on him and tore him apart.
Once Dai Jin appeared in the Temple, he wailed from the phantom pain of his terrible death and cried like a child. This was the fifth time he died out there and it terrified the living hell out of him each time more than the one before it.
His only consolation was…

He used up all the juice for today but in the fight, there was one more option available for him.
"The Thieves Guild? It must mean I can challenge the next Guild Lieutenant now. Dammit, another Named Enemy."
Dai Jin let out a tired sigh and Logged Out. He was still in his room and only around four hours after he went into the Game World. He could only go out to his courtyard, find an oven and a kindle to heat some water and wash up before going to sleep.
**"
*Knock Knock Knock*
"Dai Jin! Dai Jin! Open the hell up!"
The next morning was not as kind to him as the last one. The door to his courtyard which he blocked last night had some angry dude after it.
"Who is it?" He walked out of his room and called out.
"I said open up, you trash! It is the Head of the Guards. Open at well." The man shouted.
"Gimme a break!" Dai Jin sighed in frustration, "Coming right up."
Whoever the Head of the Guard is, Dai Jin couldn't let his guard down around those Dai Guards bastards after last night. They are probably finding some trouble for him.
"System, show me the Lv.3 Armor and Headgear."

[Lv.3 Hard Leather Jacket] 6 SS
[Lv.3 Solid Headpiece] 6 SS
Total: 12 SS
Confirm? Y/N

"Damn microtransactions! Yes."
The items were purchased instantly and Dai Jin equipped them. The Hard Leather Jacket covered most of his upper body with strong leather and even came with bracers while the Solid Headpiece was covering most of his head with a large forehead protector.
"Right! There is that option."
Dai Jin found the Equipment Menu and instantly turned off the visibility of the headgear. Magical as it sounds, it didn't even leave a visual or a physical trace.
"Open up, you idiot, or we'll break in right now."
"I said coming!" Dai Jin opened the door but at the same instant, a hand broke in and grabbed his right hand pulling him out.
Dai Jin reacted at the same second by raising his leg and kicking against the wall opposite to him just before he was pulled out of his courtyard.
"What is the meaning of this?" Dai Jin roared.
Opposite to him was a large rough-looking man with a few grey hairs on his untended light beard.
"Dai Jin, you insect, you better stop resisting or I will beat you into pulp right now." The man said as he raised his fist.
Feeling his power, Dai Jin judged his opponent to be Lv.5 or an Intermediate Martial Novice as it is commonly known in the world. This power was enough to endanger him so he took no chance and instantly equipped the Long Blade against the man's neck in a flashy move.
"You!"
"Me? You said you are the Head of the fucking Guards?" Dai Jin asked.
"Put that away or I swear you will regret it?"
"Threatening me even with a blade to your neck. You're obviously courting death, asshole." Dai Jin applied more pressure to the man's neck, "Now answer. You are the Head of the Guards?"
"I am, so you better…"
"I better what, you asshole! You are a servant and you dated to attack the master, I'll have you cooked in oil for this." Dai Jin glared.
"HA! Haha! The Head of the Guards laughed and looked at Dai Jin, "You're thinking too much of your ability, brat. I am here to bring you to the Family Hall. The Clan Head and the Elders want you to present ahead of them right now. Hehehe, you bastard have no way out of this one."
So it is the old dogs calling for him. No wonder the small dogs came barking so confidently. He can't ignore an order from those dogs if he doesn't want more trouble but the moment he walks out with those guards, he will be surrounded and beaten down then they will say that he tried to run away or something. Fucking dogs! It is always the same tricks.
"Aye! I'll be going then." Dai Jin nodded which caused the guards and their head to sneer, "But… before going, an example needs to be made. You fucks dare to come to me place Baring Fangs and Brandishing Claws? This won't go unpunished."
*Slash*
With a decisive hand movement, Dai Jin waved the swords in lightning speed towards the left ear of the head of the guards.
"AAAAH!"
In one clean slice, the man's ear flew from its place and he knelt down howling in pain.
"Hehe!" Dai Jin smiled like the devil and with and with the pommel of his sword, he struck the head of the guards on his nose causing him to pass out.
The rest of the guard saw the strongman they follow crumble in front of the devil-like Dai Jin and they felt that with their measly staffs, they are not a match for this guy and his sword.
"You, you and you." Dai Jin pointed at three weakest looking guards, "You lead me to the Clan Hall. The rest of you clean up this mess."
He now reversed the situation greatly, not only he kept his face but started to make himself a reputation so no guard should mess with him afterward. Now that the small dogs are dealt with hopefully for good, it is time to face those old dogs who harbor nothing but hate and contempt towards him.
He decided to clean the blood on his blade by the sleeve of his shirt and make it visible for all that some situations had happened then he put the blade back in the Storage before anyone notices. He was guided to the most central building on the Dai Clan grounds.
One of the guards leading him to the hall ran forward and climbed the stairs before kneeling down and announcing.
"Dai Jin has arri…"
Dai Jin didn't wait for the guard to finish and kicked him out of the way.
"Move aside. How annoying!"
And he walked in.
The Family Hall of the Dai Clan was spacious, elegant and well decorated. Mats of magical beasts hides and paintings of various styles centered by a map of the local Provence at the deepest place of the Hall was a banner above it carrying the character "Dai".
Aside from how good the hall looked, what made it look as disgusting as ever was those faces Dai Jin never forgot. They even sat in the same order they used to sit in the Dai Family gatherings.
The eights elder, the seventh, all the way to the third then there was the Clan Head, Dai Guozhi, who was sitting at the innermost area with the Grand Elder, Dai Mo, on his side. There were indeed some guests in the gathering and a face Dai Jin recognized very well making him grin for a moment there.
He stood in the middle of the Hall with the eyes of all the surrounding people eyeing him up and down. He was by no way troubled but when he saw Dai Mo having a not so pleased look on his face, he understood that the Clan Head had decided to put him in a troublesome situation.
"Dai Jin answers the summon. May I know what is the reason I was brought here first thing in the morning?" He asked without looking at anyone.
"Look at this rude rascal. Why didn't you greet your elders first thing you entered? And why did you assault the guard so brazenly in front of the Clan Head and the Elders?" The sixth Elder, Dai Yongzheng
Dai Jin made a confused face and titled his head.
"I'm sorry, Uncle Yongzheng. How do I greet the Elders?" Dai Jin asked with complete insolence.
"You brat!" The 6th Elder wanted to shout at Dai Jin and teach him manners but he was interrupted.
"Sixth Brother, enough." It was the Clan Head who spoke, "Dai Jin, I think today's matter is urgent so please, answer the questions truthfully."
"Truthfully? Such a subjective matter!" Dai Jin said.
"What do you mean?" Dai Guozhi asked.
"I am not sure, to be honest. Heard it on the street the other day." Dai Jin shamelessly joked around, "I think it is about people who already determine the truth they desire in their heads and overlook the true truth. Now I am not making any sense again. I apologize."
The words Dai Jin just said made most of the people present in the hall almost want to curse and throw their teacups at him. Who does he think he is to talk like that in front of the Elders and who cares whatever truth they believe?
But he was just standing confidently among all the gazes of hate.
"Jin'er, show some respect. Your uncles here will side with the truth." Dai Mo said in an angry tone.
"Yes, grandfather. Uncles, what have I done that requires all of you to be present?" Dai Jin bowed a little with no hint of respect as he spoke.
"This is Tao Shirong, the housekeeper of the Gong Clan." Dai Guozhi introduced the man who was sitting at the edge of the seats to the right, "Do you know the young man beside him?"
"Hmmm… looks awfully familiar. What's wrong with his face?" Dai Jin feigned ignorance looking at the face he personally ruined yesterday.
"You lying bas… You Liar!" Tao Shirong bounced off his seat and pointed at Dai Jin, "This is Young Master Gong Bao whom you cowardly assaulted yesterday."
"Dai Jin, don't you dare deny what you did to me?" Gong Bao also stood up feebly and pointed at Dai Jin, "What you did to me and how you injured three of my friends rendering their crippled is unforgivable."
"Oooh! The thugs from yesterday." Dai Jin made a face that arrived at a realization right away, "I remember now. Grandpa, this young man has a strange affinity to walls. Whenever I hit his head against one, a funny sound comes out."
"You bastard! So you admit doing this to Young Master Gong Bao. Dai Clan Head, the truth had been revealed, the Gong Clans demands and explanation." Tao Shirong shouted.
"Dai Jin, is that true?" Dai Guozhi started daggers at Dai Jin.
The other elders seemed to be delighted for his blunder while Dai Mo bit his lower lip bitterly.
"I just said I did." Dai Jin bluntly declared it.
"Very well, very well." Dai Guozhi said as he sternly glared at Dai Jin, "Housekeeper Tao, return to the Gong Head and tell him that an explanation shall be delivered to…"
"I seeeeee! So that's how truth becomes subjective." Dai Jin said.
"Dai Jin, do you have anything to say about the Clan's Head judgment?" The 4th Elder could no longer tolerate Dai Jin's remarks.
"I guess, yeah. First, I don't to be the one telling the Clan Head how to do his job since I am well… me, and second, why is it that the Gong Clan Housekeeper is the one asking for explaining. Is it the Gong Clan that lost all of its men or the Dai Clan is just a pushover that would gather all its elders to receive one servant?"
*Slam*
Dai Guozhi slammed his hand at the table beside him, shattering it to splinters.
"Cousin Mo, is that how you raised your grandchild?" Dai Guozhi glared at Dai Mo.
In return, Dai Mo stared coldly at Dai Guozhi.
"Cousin Guozhi, I think you should hear Jin'er right. He didn't say anything. He only questioned." Dai Mo stood for his grandson.
"You are spoiling him, Cousin Mo."
"And you are being unreasonable."
A standoff between Dai Guozhi and Dai Mo showed the deep fracture in the Dai Clan and caused the others to tremble. Dai Mo is a Late Martial Master and so is Dai Guozhi but Dai Mo was a tad stronger. He always held too much influence leading his cousins to be jealous of him. Their grandfather (Jin's Great Great-grandfather) had two sons when he colonized this land and his fortune was split between them. While one of them had eight sons, the other had only one who inherited all his father's assets, that is Dai Mo. While the others expanded wisely compared to Dai Mo, he still has the biggest share in the family assets.
"Jin'er." Dai Mo called, "Be polite to your Elders and explain why you hit the Gong Clan kid."
"Alright, Grandpa." Dai Mo and stood away from the center in a clever move to stand as the accuser in instead of being the accused, "Last night right at the sunset two blocks away from the main gate entrance and exactly in the alleyway behind our family's tea shop, Gong Bao and three of his followers assumingly Gong Clan servants has assaulted one of ours cornering him in the alley with the intention of robbing him."
"Dai Jin, you shameless liar. I wasn't anywhere near that place? I have witnesses that I… ouch!" Gong Bao roared.
His bandaged and brushed face hurt him the moment he moved it violently.
"Hahaha! The heavens are fair. You don't dare lie in front of my grandfather. So what you brought witnesses. I have the ultimate evidence." Dai Jin declared, "I know you were passed out but I used your bloody face to draw my signature on the wall last night. Should we go now and check on it? Dried blood is very stubborn to be removed."
"This morning, the servants reported a message written in blood on the back wall of the tea shop." Dai Mo confirmed, "What does that character say?"
"It says Gold. That's my name."
The ridiculous situation was just getting weirder. All the Elders here can't deny that they just received a word that such an incident happened and they thought it was some sort of a threat to the family about money or anything. So it was just the doing of an idiot.
"Such a thing… you used my face for what?" Gong Bao was utterly speechless.
"And so he admits that it was his face that was used at the place he claimed to not have been to." Dai Jin said, "Did he come to the Dai Clan looking for trouble? Yes, and twice. Did he assault and attempted to rob one of our people? So brazenly yes. Did he try to cause a problem between the Dai Clan and the Gong Clan? I can only see it that way. The only thing I don't understand is why the Gong Clan's Head or some Elder is not here. Should we go and ask them whether they know or not know about you being here or not?"
Dai Jin pressured Gong Bao and the Gong Clan Housekeeper just by words alone.
"Enough with your trickery, you evil schemer. It was that servant who stole from me all along. Don't you dare stain my good Clan's name." Gong Bao claimed.
"Oh! Fine, now you are accusing our people of being robbers? So brazen!" Dai Jin said.
"Basically, it is a servant so he is not one of ours." At this moment of victory, Dai Yongzheng said.
He was basically trying to ruin the counterattack of Dai Jin against Gong Bao.
"Is that so? Indeed. If it happens that I have cut the ear of one of those servants, will I be punished?" Dai Jin innocently asked.
It was mildly provoking to say such a thing to someone who was trying to ruin his plan about standing up for a servant so the Sixth Elder took the bait splendidly.
"If the servant is being insolent to his master and caused trouble, it is natural to punish them to the severity of their actions." He said.
"We finally agree on something." Dai Jin said.
"What are you aiming at, Dai Jin?" Dai Guozhi asked after feeling that something is about to go wrong somewhere.
"Nah, it is just I was worried about that insolent brazen servant and what to do with his ear. To think he would raise his fist at me, I'll throw his ear away."
Dai Jin actually took out a bloody ear and threw it in a fire brazier standing in the side of the hall.
"Jin'er, what was that?" Dai Mo was surprised by the ruthlessness of his grandson.
"Just the ear of the Head of the Guards. To think he would dare to hit someone surnamed Dai."
"""What?!"""
Who is the Head of the Guards? He may be a drunkard but this guy is not some ordinary thug, he is one thug to be feared and Dai Guozhi was nurturing him to be his hunting dog. If Dai Jin has truly done such a thing as cutting off the ear of the Head of the Guards, this may change things drastically.
A guard entered the hall and passed behind the elders straight to Dai Guozhi whispering something to him while eyeing Dai Jin. Dai Guozhi had a stiff look on his face as someone who just swallowed a bug and kept staring daggers at Dai Jin.
He truly did it, that was the impression this situation gave.
Gong Bao, whose situation was still unresolved, felt that he survived last night without getting an ear of a finger cut away. Dai Jin was indeed the trash of the whole town but one day and night, he became mean enough to bully the thugs in the Dai Clan.
"Now that I got what I had on my mind ridden off, it is time to deal with our friends from the Gong Clan." Dai Jin led the meeting on his own amidst the glares of his relatives, "What do you want exactly?"
Gong Bao was in a tough spot but the one who worsened his situation wasn't Dai Jin but rather Housekeeper Tao Shirong.
"We still demand an explanation. We have no interest in how many ears you cut. You accused Young Master Gong Bao to be a thief. Well, I accuse you of being a deceiver, bring out that servant whoever he is." Tao Shirong said.
"Jin'er, who is that servant? I want to hear his testimony." Dai Mo asked.
"His name is Zhi Xiang or something. He runs errands for Miss Dai Zhenzhen." Dai Jin replied.
"You said Zhi Xiang?" The Sixth Elder showed a hint of being disturbed all of a sudden, "This dirty boy is nothing but a stable boy."
The Dai Clan members looked at Dai Yongzheng wondering why he would know the name of a stable boy but no one really bothered to ask. By the next minute, Zhi Xiang was brought between the Elders and knelt among them trembling like a rat.
"You are Zhi Xiang?" Dai Guozhi asked.
"Y- Yes. Zhi Xiang r- reports to Great Clan Head."
"Relax, Zhi Xiang. Take a deep breath and tell us all what happened yesterday." Dai Mo asked.
In a full detailed account, Zhi Xiang narrated what exactly happened yesterday from the moment he was summoned by Dai Zhenzhen's maids to the moment where he was picked on by Gong Bao and his men who tried to take away the book he was sent to buy. The fact that Dai Zhenzhen, one of the young talents in the clan neglected her duties and bought a meaningless book was kinda shameful in the faith of her father, the Eighth Elder. Zhi Xiang then spoke of how Dai Jin showed up, the conversation that happened and how he took down the thugs on his own. All of this was said amidst the protesting of Gong Bao and housekeeper Tao Shirong.
Of course, the Dai Clan would try to make Zhi Xiang's testimony sound meaningless but Dai Mo started acting based on it and defended Dai Jin and Zhi Xiang while accusing Gong Bao of being shameless and simply looking for trouble.
It was then when the Dai Clan acted unreasonably once again to discriminate against Dai Jin. At the entrance of the hall, Dai Yaoting, Dai Feng's younger brother and the one who fought with Dai Jin last night, showed up.
"Greetings, Clan Head, Grand Elder, Elders!" He went in and greeted everyone accordingly.
"Dai Yaoting, nephew. What brings you here?" Clan Head Dai Guozhi smiled widely seeing one of the younger generation's bright talents enter the hall.
"Reporting to Clan Head. I have heard about the situation with cousin Dai Jin and took the initiative to ask cousin Dai Zhenzhen about what happened. She is with me outside requesting entry." Dai Yaoting said with a natural smile.
"Oh, please. Let her in." Dai Guozhi caught up with Dai Yaoting's idea and allowed another witness in the hall.
At that moment, Dai Jin looked at Dai Mo with a tired face. Dai Mo frowned but he could only Dai Jin shaking his head. It seemed that there is no longer anything in his sleeve for that.
What is to be expected anyway? That Dai Yaoting would bring someone to support the claim of Dai Jin? Impossible. Not Dai Yaoting.
The moment Dai Zhenzhen entered, she claimed to have never sent Zhi Xiang anywhere and didn't acquire any book about any novel. The words that can't be put to equal credibility with the testimony of a lowly servant.
The situation was now reversed. Dai Jin as a brazen thug, Zhi Xiang as an unruly servant and Dai Mo as a senile old man who was sided blindly with his lying grandson.
While Dai Mo was fuming with silent rage and Zhi Xiang was trembling from fear, Dai Jin took the situation quite naturally. It is not the first time the Dai Family has put him at such a disadvantage. Still, they were all acting too shamelessly today. It seems that they are all very impatient over something.
"Alright, let's wrap up the day." Dai Jin said, "Whatever the truth is, I am sure one day the water shall recede and the rocks shall appear."
Dai Jin grabbed the servant boy Zhi Xiang by the shoulder and turned to Dai Mo.
"Grandpa, remember that time you told me to pick a personal attendant. I am choosing this guy." Dai Jin made a quick decision.
"Dai Jin, this servant is to be punished. You can't protect him like that." Sixth Elder Dai Yongzheng shot out of his chair.
"What is done is done. I don't have an attendant and he is as unfortunate as I am." Dai Jin said, "What say you, grandfather?"
"You can have him, Jin'er." Dai Mo agreed.
"You heard him. Run along now and wait for me in front of my courtyard. If I don't see you there when I get back, I'll be breaking your knees."
Dai Jin scared off Zhi Xiang who wished for the Earth to shrink between him and Dai Jin's residents before anything else. Now that this troublesome one was out of the way, Dai Jin could focus on the matter at hand.
"Dear uncles, either way and from the very beginning, the situation had nothing to do with a servant or a book or anything of the sort." Dai Jin said, messing with all the cards on the table, "It's all about this runt doing things as he pleases in our family's territory. Why would we give everyone an account once we clean the trash of our doorstep?"
Dai Jin slipped out of the guilt zone and returned the case to its natural course. He even went as far as to stand beside Dai Mo, in other words, with the side that will give judgment.
"I think we have heard enough regarding this situation. Don't you think so as well, Clan Head?" Dai Mo asked Dai Guozhi.
"Yes, I am quite annoyed with it already. It is only the competitive spirit of the younger generation that caused such a mess each time. Alright. Tao Shirong, Gong Bao, go back to your Gong Clan and we will consider the matter of today dropped. If you raise any issues or go after Dai Jin, I will have a personal conversation with the Gong Head."
The sudden change of Dai Guozhi's attitude showed how cunning this man can be. At first, he didn't mind getting Dai Jin into trouble but now that Dai Jin appeared to be troublesome and willing to trade a punch for a punch, Dai Guozhi decided it would be the best course of action to avoid making inner struggles with Dai Mo and his grandson.
Tao Shirong and Gong Bao walked out of the hall but on his way out Gong Bao turned to Dai Jin and pointed.
"This isn't over." Gong Bao shouted.
The Elders became displeased with this unruly neighbor but Dai Jin was the one to step up for him.
"Gong Bao, if you are so confident stop running to the elders causing problems for me. Face me anytime, anywhere, and I will take care of you."
"You…" Gong Bao wanted to come back to Dai Jin but all of a sudden, the situation around him turned unfavorable.
He felt a large presence standing behind him. Actually, more than just one but he couldn't recognize who it belonged to. That was when that voice was heard across the hall.
"Cousin Dai Jin is right, we the Dai Clan are not pushovers and it is disrespectful to do that, Gong Bao. I, Dai Feng, will see that this never happens ever again."
