Hey all! I've been meaning to post more originals for our higher tiers, so here ya go! I'm currently working on an illustration for my portfolio and wanted to share my progress.

Started out with a basic anatomy sketch, then I had some issues that needed working out. I did my edits in red/blue pencil.

Defined some more things and moved things around.

Once I got the anatomy to a place where I was happy with it, I did my lines in a rough brush on about 80% opacity. It gives a nice dynamic movement to the lines that I enjoy working with while I paint.

On the layer underneath, I filled the whole figure with a midtone gray. I then locked that layer and began to lay down some basic shades. I didn't want this piece to be too dramatic in lighting, since she's in the clouds. I want it to be more soft, but the light mostly comes from the top, top left.

Then, I added a layer on top of my gray midtone layer, clipped to it, filled it with light blue, and set it to lighten. This softened the tones and gave me a nice purple-y sky-blue hue. I then merged the lighten layer with the gray midtone layer. Then added another clipping mask above that and laid down some basic flat colors, keeping in mind the opacity of my brush. This gives it a neat watercolor effect!

Last step for today- I used a pinkish-red and a blue as my gradient map and set it to lighten. It gave the overall piece a nice blue/purple aura. The linework is then colored to be a darker purple so it's not as distracting as the black. Then everything is merged onto one layer. The layer below will be used for the background!
I'm now ready to paint this, but I'll delve deeper into that in the next post.
Hope this is helpful! If you have any requests (how to draw clothes, anatomy references, color references, etc) let me know and I'll do my best to answer them!
