Friday Rambles and Game Dev Update 2024-11-15

Oh boy, it's the Friday Rambles.

Real Life Stuff

I finally checked out the Nintendo Music App. It had fewer songs than I was expecting, but they at least have the DKC2 soundtrack which is the best game OST ever made (after the Endless Monday OST, of course), so I guess it's alright. Being able to extend songs is a killer feature.

Also I was surprised by how much I've been enjoying the Splatoon 3 soundtrack, considering I've never played it.

Anarchy Rainbow's got this Samba de Janeiro style drop that makes me swoon every time.

Game Dev Stuff

Last week I said that I'd go out to a cafe every day and get some real work done. So on Monday I went to the local outdoor mall, which is fairly quiet on weekdays, and went to the Starbucks there with my laptop to do some writing. But then it turned out it was Veteran's Day, which apparently meant that everyone in the entire city would be at the mall to do shopping or whatever, and it was a total nightmare mass of people everywhere. I was still there all day because my ride wasn't available till the afternoon ("Hey why don't you just take the subway home," says a smug person living someplace with functional public transit), but didn't get much work done. So much for my fairytale productivity story.

The next day I worked at home to recover. I wrote some new dialogue and drew some new sprites (placeholders) needed for the new dialogue. Then I signed up for a coworking membership and then went to the office for the rest of the week.

[imagine a screenshot here of the placeholder sprites with dialogue. it's a big spoiler for the ending though, so I'm just gonna be mysterious about it.]

Working in a coworking space has a way different vibe, I gotta say. I feel like I'm actually going to work. It puts me in a different mindset and makes me a lot more aware of how I'm spending my time. I can also get up for a few minutes without worrying about whether someone's gonna steal my stuff. I'll still have to do some of the more heavy duty work at home since all my gear's there, but the point is, it made me productive enough to write the ending. Cool! Mission Accomplished!!

Now I have to write everything else to fill in the blanks lol. And then rewrite the ending to adjust for changes I made while writing in the blanks. Well, at least we're making progress. Definitely on track to finish (the script) by end of the month now.

I also changed some gameplay in a side gameplay thing. Notice the red line is now below the blue line.

As I approach the end, I'm wondering why I'm putting so much effort into a free update. Hopefully the "Overtime Edition" will sell well on the Switch, at least, and this will all be worth it.

The End

I fulfilled my promise! Next week I'll be going into the office three days, like a true hybrid worker. I'll be filling in the remaining blanks in the script, finishing up side routes, and hopefully be completing everything else that needs written in script form. Once it goes out to translators, it'll be a huge pain in the butt to make changes to the script, so I want it to be as final as possible.

No Tiger-chan! I'm definitely almost done this time!!

Okay, thanks for your support, as always. See you next week!

Comments

depends on a bunch of factors, but i think personally it's worth the cost for my situation. it's nice to have the separation between home and work and focus without distractions (i have lots of distractions at home), and puts me in a more serious mindset to get stuff done. downside is i don't have my big monitor but i don't really need one to write scripts, and i can save the heavy gamedev coding stuff for my working from home days on my big gamedev machine.

Would you recommend a coworking space?
