Arkham Cold Cases and the monthly bonus podcast

In case you missed it, I posted a new podcast called Arkham Cold Cases on RPPR Actual Play as our annual April Fools episode. It's a true crime podcast trying to figure out what the fuck happened in Arkham during the 1920s and 30s. In other words, taking Lovecraft's stories and assuming they are regular crimes.

I would like to change the monthly bonus podcast for the RPPR Patreon from After Hours to Arkham Cold Cases, at least for a few months. I do like doing After Hours, but it's getting harder to find suitable material to review - we've covered all the low hanging fruit and a lot of what's left wouldn't make for a good podcast. This isn't to say I couldn't keep doing After Hours but I definitely do NOT have time to do both podcasts every month.

I think I could get a lot of mileage out of Arkham Cold Cases. I could get different guests every month and build storylines out of amateur true crime fans accidentally uncovering cosmic horror.

You're the ones supporting RPPR so it's really up to you. Give Arkham Cold Cases a listen if you haven't already.  Do you want me to try out this new format or do you want me to keep delving into weird and bad RPGs for review?

Ahhhh this I'm really ok with this. I mean you guys do have the low hanging fruit of the rest of Palladium and World of Darkness should you wanna swing that way.

I really like the concept, to agree with Dan I also see this hitting a vein. Especially after shows like the outsider on HBO, people are looking for a true crime that kinda does a 90° turn. Also be pretty bitchin to get a descendent of the "good" Whateley clan.

Colton Hartill

That sounds great! I'm looking forward to all of your upcoming projects.

I've started a list of RPGs to tackle for After Hours. Once I get at least 24 titles on the list, I'll start doing After Hours again. Obviously DFD will go on that list.

Ross Payton

Arkham Cold Cases would be awesome, but after Caleb mentioned Death Frost Doom in the last After Hours I actually do want to hear you talk about it. I totally understand wanting to avoid modern OSR products with dedicated fandoms and toxic creators, but DFD was created before LotFP became a brand and it was one of their books that didn't make me nauseous so I'd like to hear your hot takes on where it goes wrong.

Arkham Cold cases is a really solid idea. It could go viral if you hit the right time, level of polish etc. My best guess (which is not informed by your time constraints and actual knowledge about podcasting) is that Cold cases needs more editing than your other pods. There was about 15 to 25 min that was silver to gold. Also, "umms" were super noticeable because you much less frequently do the 'umms' in other formats. Cold cases needs to be kind of slick and produced to mock the Serial type crime podcasts. Maybe get a few more episodes done and then see if editing the best of them is a big improvement. As a follow on / advert animated or slide show format on YouTube with 'handouts / clues' especially if the voice only turns into a real draw. Possibly a crime scene layout... not professional but the kind a podcaster would do to talk about a scene with a guest would be a nice add on.

Thanks Ross. I 'll give another listen.

cold cases is on RPPR Actual Play right now

Cold Cases sounds interesting, I'd love to check it out some more.

As much as I love after hours, taking a break from it sounds like a good idea! Besides that the Cold Cases could see the investigators slowly going insane (or quickly, depending on the investigator)

Arkham Cold Cases is fine, but I feel it needs just a *dash* of the characters occasionally dealiing with mild san loss from whatever they've discovered, then rationalizing it away. IMHO, the san loss is the spice that gives cosmic horror sharp, sharp teeth. Also, over time I will expect for the different investigations to find interconnections. So in a way: Arkham Cold Case will effectively be an Actual Play, but free form, and not many simultaneous players, and within the conceit that it's a podcast. --- I hope I'm not overcomplicating it. I'm just trying to imagine where the premise might lead a ways on down the road.

For whatever reason, my brain didn’t catch on cold cases. I’ll give it another shot when it hits a podcast app.

Brownie Davis

both podcasts take a lot of time to produce and I already work on12-16 unique podcasts episodes a month between RPPR, The Mixed Six, Night Clerk Radio, and podcasts I edit as a freelancer.

Ross Payton

Haven't listened to cold cases yet, but I'm sure its good. I think what's more important is you keep things fresh/exciting for yourself and guests. So, pretty much what others have said.

komplx

por que no los dos?

Ray Gibbs

I frankly can't choose cause both sound great

Bronze-Gear

Arkham Cold Cases was great and I see a lot of long term potential for it.

Riley Crowder

Ditto the above two. After hours is awesome, but I'd rather see more of it when you're inspired about it, than see it become something forced, and Arkham cold cases sounds pretty awesome

Eric Dingler

I love After Hours, but I think coming back to it after you've found some material you're more excited about, and after trying out Arkham Cold Cases is the way to go.

Ken Ringwald

Stretch those creative wings Ross; I want more from the cold cases.
