Audiography Volume Eight: Architecture About Dancing

I feel like I definitely first encountered this quote (probably) by Martin Mull in a rom-com, but the saying goes:

Writing about music is like dancing about architecture.

Well, since I'm writing about music all the time lately, and I have a book coming out today, AND it is autumn, the most literary season (fight me), this month we're gonna lay that thing down, flip it, and reverse it.

I want your Architecture About Dancing songs: songs about books, storytelling, writing, tall tales.

They must explicitly be about stories/books/writing--that means that it can't just be a song that tells a story (though we're absolutely doing that another month), but it CAN be a song that retells, references, explicates, or otherwise engages with a particular book. So no Cat's in the Cradle by Harry Chapin, but yes Wuthering Heights by Kate Bush.

They can also just be about books or writing as a general concept, like S.J. Tucker's Ravens in the Library or Seanan McGuire's Writing Again. Or mention books, writing, stories, tales, either specifically (Five-and-a-Half Minute Hallway by Poe--based on House of Leaves by Mark Z. Danielewski) or generally (Paperback Writer by The Beatles).

Or just songs that make you think of fluttering pages in cozy rooms, late nights reading under the blankets,

It must be said that S.J. Tucker is proooobably cheating, since if you're on this Patreon you're pretty dang likely to be aware of the four albums worth of material based on my books. But whatever, I make the rules and I don't care, load 'er up with Sooj!

Just give me your best music about books, or in bookish orbit. I'm super excited for this one! I'll try to get it up as soon as the recs slow to a trickle.

Rules Reminder:

-Three songs

-If it's not on Spotify, provide a link where it can be found

-Any genre, era, artist, style, etc. "Song" can also be loosely interpreted, I have no issue with spoken-word, for example.

-Though we do try to avoid promoting terrible people, everyone understands that sometimes you just love a thing and didn't know the artist was a suppurating dicktoad when we fell in love, and now we're stuck with the beautiful association and don't want to let the dicktoads win. That's fine, just keep it on this side of Butthole Jams: The Bin-Dweller's Collection. Or at least explain why it should come out of the bin!

-If you're wondering if a song you want to include "counts," the answer is always yes.

Don't forget, you can always come and discuss this or any other post, or just hang out, on the Discord server, where we seriously have not had one mean word in the seven months it's existed, and all the good parts of the internet exist without the bad. I love you guys so much.

1. "Love Story (Taylor's Version)" by Taylor Swift I'll be honest, I've been struggling to come up with a third song for weeks now; that is, when I've had a chance to see if I could think of one at all. At this late stage, I've given up and just opted for a gimme. Tbf, the new Red came out this month! This is of course not from Red (though the new Fearless did just come out in April, weirdly), but I'm not sure there's anything on that album that fits better, or fits at all. Granted, "All Too Well" is a short film now, but I doubt that counts :p Plus I'm going to assume that Red is a little played out by now and that people will be simply delighted to return to Fearless for a bit :p https://open.spotify.com/track/6YvqWjhGD8mB5QXcbcUKtx 2. "Birthday / The Pain" by For Those I Love One of the emotional centerpieces on one of the most emotional albums of the year. This is no dramatics, this is no tales of 90s classics. https://open.spotify.com/track/6qYyTbkdk0xXojKWJUWK8Z 3. "Neverland" by Marillion Another of my immediate ideas. https://open.spotify.com/track/2RYOOtEcnJZK5YSpeVLuMW
