RPPR After Hours: Soul in a Box

After watching the first episode of American Gods, I wondered what other gods could be lurking in America. Caleb, Tom, and I discuss that and I review a very complex 3E module from Necromancer Games called Chaos Rising. It's about a quest to retrieve an amulet that houses the soul of the Faceless Lord. In order to get it, the heroes must find and carry a 500 pound platinum anvil that radiates anti-magic through 2 nested demi planes. Then it gets weird. Tom also reviews After The Bomb: England.

Can i put my soul inside of someone else's Soul?

Someone tell Caleb! Orcus is a Roman god of the underworld and the word "orc" from Tolkien is derived from Orcus, not the other way around.

we can't have non-spellcasters do anything better than a spellcaster. If a fighter can replicate a fireball spell, that's overpowered.

WotC relied a lot on the RPGA (Role Playing Game Association) for the playtesting of D&D 3e. I can only speak about the local group, but they were hardcore optimisers who endlessly discussed and debated the best way to build their PCs from level 1-20 and how to combine feats, spells and magic items for maximum effect. Most of them considered the exploitable elements of 3e to be features, not bugs. I did hear some stories about Fighter feats being nerfed during the playtest: Cleave, for example, had no restrictions in the original version, which often resulted in whole rooms full of monsters being killed by a single attack from a Fighter. But apparently this wasn't the play experience that the guys behind 3e wanted to give players. Not without having to get a second feat, at least.

You know I'm listening to Tom talking about "After the Bomb" and the human enemies in the game. How inept even with superior military tech they are at "reclaiming the Earth". Cant help thinking how similar that situation is to the new films of Planet of the Apes.

Might I suggest watching them play Dread on YouTube? It's just not long enough, Ross...

its like we weighed his soul down with a 500 pound anvil that radiates antimagic.

A game based on American Gods/new demigods seems like it could actually be fun and interesting. I'm putting that on my backburner to brew into a campaign idea.

I know you guys have insinuated that you have faces for radio, but never have I ever wanted to watch a video feed of the podcast so badly before. Just to see the light die out in Caleb's eyes as you guys keep dumping more and more pointless exposition on him. Every time he went silent and Ross started cackling, I pictured Caleb going off like Woody Harrelson in True Detective when he watched The Tape; just snapping in a heady mix of disgust and disbelief, leaping from his chair and leaving the room, cursing up a storm while he did so. Well played, Payton, well played.
