WoD The Heck: Wraith the Oblivion

Shaun and I act as Virgil to Faust's Dante as we descend into the Tempest that is Wraith the Oblivion. Spectres, the Hierarchy and occasional Neverborn Malfean are just a few of the hazards we'll face in our journey to the dark heart of the Labyrinth.

WoD The Heck: Wraith the Oblivion

I'm it is disappointing we didn't continue this series but then again giving White Wolf free publicity isn't a good idea either. We never touched on why the Kindred of the east are so weird, or do a deep dive on ghouls. Or the dozen source books which are just 1 off minor super naturals with weird weakness's and things just to throw at your players and go blah you didn't see or know about this obscure source book!

This one was neat because I'd never read Wraith. Except it turned out I had, because they recycled almost everything from it for the Abyssals/Underworld in Exalted. Neverborn, Nemessaries, Arcanoi, Malfeans, pretty much everything. With Wraith, it really seems like they hit the personal horror target at last, overall, but that a game of coming to terms with oblivion is maybe not the easiest thing to sell for game night. It also seemed like both Ross and Shaun liked this game more than the others. Wraith has its WWisms but it does do some new and interesting things along the way - like how the Shadow player kinda evolves into the demons in Better Angels, for instance.

Also will you ever talk about alternatives to some of these games? It took me a distressingly long time to realise the ORE was a refined version of what WW was trying.

Will you be doing episodes on NWoD eventually I'd like to see what changed.

weeell...I dunno about that, the D&D otherworlds are just as goofy as the umbra but waaay clearer. White Wolf is guilty of Lovecraft-level "beyond your mortal imagining" when attempting/refusing to describe the actual experience of being in these places -even though you can go there.- one thing I always find incomprehensible about Wraith is what traveling in, to and through the Maelstrom is ACTUALLY LIKE. like...a nihil opens..and you go through it...and then what? or a Byway in the Maelstrom, is it, like, flat? does it loop? "enter Heaven as a seventh-level spell" is silly, but it's more practical than "it's all possible, man! it could be aaanything!" and I say that loving Wraith!

I think the correct path for Jack Carter's underworld adventures is becoming a Mummy. When a mummy's khat is totally destroyed, i.e. being at the center of a nuclear explosion, they can't resurrect . Instead, they get spit out in the Shadowlands as an invincible ghost that can even survive in Oblivion. Also, typing that out reminded me, I can't wait for the M:tR episode.

Sounds like an invitation to switch to making "Wot Coast is D&D, then?" episodes. Faust: "Extra planes? I thought this was a fantasy game!? What are aircrafts doing in D&D?" Shaun: "No, no, that's something else, there aren't any aircrafts in D&D... well, ok, there are, kind of. Ok, there might actually be lots of different kinds *Faust laughs hysterically*, but that's beside the point! There's one big group of aircrafts, technically. They're the spelljammers. Remember them? They fly through the Phlogiston between worlds?" Faust: "UUUH" And so the cycle continues.

Faust is generally great btw. He's by far my favorite new cast member.

I understand he's new to WoD but sometimes I'm really sure Faust is just being intentionally obtuse about things. Other times he's just making a bigger deal about something than it really is. Like, umbra realms are no different than extra planes in D&D. It just grates on me.

Bryce Helfrich

@BryceHelfrich As someone who also does a podcast that mostly tears into things that I still love to look through and read even though it's not always well written or the best but still has cool ideas in it, I dont think it's mean spirited so much as a hard criticism and also trying to make an entertaining show. Dunno if totally the case, but it seems like Ross and Shawn are/were big fans of WoD, and Faust is just reacting as a new person to the setting, without nostalgia glasses. My own co-host was totally new to creepypastas and he's had a similar reaction that faust has had.

Al Dente Rigamortis

as someone who liked WoD as a kid and still has some periodic patience for it I nonetheless think calling it stupid forever is both fair and warranted

Man, I'm kinda getting turned off on WoD the heck. Poking fun of how convoluted the metaplot was is all fine and dandy but lately this is coming off as "this is STUPID and look how STUPID they were for liking it" At the time I really loved old WoD and this is just starting to come off as mean spirited to me.

Nuclear Frankenstein is my ecological awareness sludge-doom metal band.

Very excited. Wraith was my favorite game.
