Online Games - How Do They Work?
Added 2015-01-28 05:54:21 +0000 UTCSince we've hit the $250 milestone (and then some!) I will be running a monthly online game for patrons, which will be recorded. I will run games at a set time, which will be announced at least one week in advance. This will include the system, scenario, and what chat system we will use (skype, google hangouts, mumble etc). I will provide an hour or so to get players together, send them character sheets, etc - so if I say the game starts at 6 pm, we will start play at 7 pm, but be ready to go at 6 pm. I will only use voice chat systems that are free to use - no tabletop RPG programs that you have to pay to install. I will keep these games voice only, so you don't need a webcam. Games will be around 4 hours in length, like a con game. Patrons who have donated to RPPR via Paypal in the last year will be given priority for the first game. After that, I will create a list of backers, ranked by how much they have donated. When the time for the game rolls around, I will contact players starting at the top of the list and I will keep going down until I get a full game. Then I will run and record the game for them. Once you play a game, I will move your name to the bottom of the list. Your place in the list will be kept the same if you miss a game. Only people who actually play are moved to the bottom of the list. Only active donors at the $10 level or above will be chosen to play. So, before I announce the first game, I would like to ask everyone a few questions about preferences. 1. For the first game, I could use Skype or Google Hangouts - Skype is currently buggy with recording calls, but I know of a workaround. Google Hangouts auto-records to Youtube. Which do you prefer? 2. If I record using Hangouts, would you care if I made the youtube version publicly available? I will make a MP3 version available for your download, regardless. 3. What system do you most want me to run? I prefer to run systems I am familiar with so Call of Cthulhu, Trail of Cthulhu, Base Raiders, Fate Accelerated, or something like that. 4. Do you have any other questions?

Would love to play some Base Raiders. Also Samiede on PS4 for Destiny, the time difference might be a bit problematic (I'm in Australia) but got a 30 and always looking for more raid runs.

2015-02-12 23:49:45 +0000 UTCFiasco is a very good Hangout game too, from my experience. But that would not really be running a game for us. Still maybe an option if others of the crew want to play with the backers.

2015-01-31 21:37:14 +0000 UTCi'm super interested in trying base raiders, and trail of Cthulhu. but i'll play what ever.

2015-01-31 12:17:03 +0000 UTCI think the quasi-DKP system you are suggesting with the Google doc will handle this without any need for additional rules, though.

2015-01-30 14:48:52 +0000 UTCI agree with the folks who suggest using Trail or CoC for sessions where we want a familiar system. I'd also be open to learning a new system, because I've discovered and bought at least two new games (Itras By and Don't Rest Your Head) after hearing about them on the podcast and that's one of the nice things about a format like RPPR for me.

2015-01-29 23:14:18 +0000 UTCI'll vary times of day as well so people outside of North America get a fair shot at playing.

2015-01-29 23:13:44 +0000 UTCI hope it will be some times I as a European can attend without having to take a day of vacation. ;) But weekends sound promising.

2015-01-29 18:55:28 +0000 UTCWill any of the Patreon games work as one shot gaiden games that tie-in with on-going/in-progress RPPR campaigns?

2015-01-29 09:34:07 +0000 UTCQ and A What time of the day are you most likely to run these anyways? I will vary times - on weekdays, I will run in the late afternoon, early evening - 4 to 6 pm. On weekends, I will start around noon. All times CST. Sounds like a good system of queueing players. I do think it would be nice to let us know our location in the list, so that we can plan our availability if necessary. That is, if I'm at the top I'll know to keep some evenings open, but if I've recently played and am at the bottom I won't need to. I will make a public version of the list so everyone can keep up with it. I'll probably make it a google doc spreadsheet. Are games during the day or weekends okay? A large portion of my work schedule is night shift, though it does vary occasionally and I usually have weekends off. I will vary days so that everyone has a shot. First game will be on a weekday, then the second will be on a weekend. My work schedule is crazy, so maybe if you had a sign up early in the month for times, that would make things easier, even if I have to miss a few months. I will make the times of the games fixed, so you can choose to show up or not. Once this becomes routine, I may set fixed dates for games. Please don't count my 10.69 as more than 10 bucks for list purposes, it's just a dumb joke TOO LATE Nope, well, hey since my name popped up in the very last session of the New World Campaign I was thinking that I might get some priority!? No? Okay.... :( Just kidding!!! At 2 games a month, we're talking 12 unique players per month. Everyone will get a shot within the first few months. Are the player slots strictly for the patrons or will other members of the RPPR crew be playing as well / hanging out in Skype / Google Hangouts? I will invite RPPR regulars/alumni, but never more than 1 per game. Up to them if they play. Will you hurry up and buy a PS4 so you can join Caleb, Spencer, and myself in the paradox that is the Destiny Storyline? MAYBE

2015-01-29 07:04:05 +0000 UTC1) Anything works for me. I have both, but I havnt used Hangouts too often before 2) Go right ahead, let the veiwers listen to my dulcent tones and sharp wit! 3) Anything really im starved for RP in my town cus people are too busy being 'adults' and having 'social obligations' 4) Will you hurry up and buy a PS4 so you can join Caleb, Spencer, and myself in the paradox that is the Destiny Storyline?

2015-01-29 06:13:00 +0000 UTC1.) Google Hangouts would work fine. I've used both, whichever is best. 2.) Feel free 3.) I'd love to actually play some Eclipse Phase, but CoC or Base Raiders would be pretty fun for this type of situation. It would also be cool for some of the other indie RPGs to get some more love if you felt comfortable running them, like Slasher Flick or The Quiet Year. Or maybe some MaOCT if you feel the urge? You're the GM; run whatever will make the best game. 4.) Are the player slots strictly for the patrons or will other members of the RPPR crew be playing as well / hanging out in Skype / Google Hangouts?

2015-01-29 05:37:20 +0000 UTC1.) I prefer Google Hangouts, but hey, it's a Ross Payton game, you tell me! 2.) Nope. 3.) Something scary, preferably with a Operate Heavy Machinery theme... 4.) Nope, well, hey since my name popped up in the very last session of the New World Campaign I was thinking that I might get some priority!? No? Okay.... :( Just kidding!!!

2015-01-28 22:40:03 +0000 UTCI'm fine with any of the above. (I work alot so I'm not sure I'd be easy to match schedules for a game. ) but my preferences would be Eclipse Phase, CoC, Trail of Cthulu, (Wild Talents (if its an option), and on and on
Travis Mayes
2015-01-28 19:44:08 +0000 UTCI am okay with Hangouts and availability on Youtube. But Skype is no problem either. Hangouts seems like the more comfortable thing to do. Whatever system you have in mind I am probably fine with. As a fan of the Mythos I like CoC and Trail as an option. But I would not be mad if you used this to run some systems you can't convince the RPPR crew to play with you. Powered by the Apocalypse stuff like Dungeon World I am a fan of as well.
Jasmin Neitzel
2015-01-28 19:30:21 +0000 UTC1. I'm okay with any of them 2. That's fine with me 3. In Order of preference: Trail/Call of Cthulhu, Monsters and Other Childish Things, Base Raiders, Eclipse Phase.
Thomas Piekarski
2015-01-28 17:38:18 +0000 UTC1. Either is fine. 2. No problem! 3. I would prefer Base Raiders, but anything is good. It would be helpful to know what system a little time in advance so we can re-read the rules. 4. Please don't count my 10.69 as more than 10 bucks for list purposes

2015-01-28 17:23:41 +0000 UTC1. I can figure out how to use the one I am unfamiliar with 2. Isn't that part of the appeal? 3. Numenera

2015-01-28 16:19:58 +0000 UTCI'll pass on the lottery, spend too much of my life on skype and similar anyway. but if you do record I'd be happy to hear it.

2015-01-28 16:03:19 +0000 UTC1. I've never used Hangouts, but i'm fine with it. 2. Don't mind at all. 3. I"m good with anything. Prefer Trail, Eclipse Phase, Call, MaoCT, or Little Fears. But since FATE is so popular, I guess I need to try it as well. 4. My work schedule is crazy, so maybe if you had a sign up early in the month for times, that would make things easier, even if I have to miss a few months.

2015-01-28 15:58:49 +0000 UTC1) Have never used Hangouts, but I'm fine with either. 2) No problem at all! 3) I'm good with just about anything. Call of Cthulhu, Eclipse Phase, Trail of Cthulhu, and Base Raiders are all good choices. 4) Are games during the day or weekends okay? A large portion of my work schedule is night shift, though it does vary occasionally and I usually have weekends off.

2015-01-28 15:34:50 +0000 UTC1) I have had good results with Google Hangouts. 2) I don't have a problem with it. 3) I will pretty much play anything personally. I like trying new systems.

2015-01-28 15:02:48 +0000 UTC1. I don't care; I've never used hangouts, but I have some experience with Skype having quality problems on multi-way calls. 2. That's all fine; whatever works best for you. 3. In order of preference: Fate Accelerated, Trail of Cthulhu, Base Raiders, Call of Cthulhu. But I'm perfectly happy with anything. 4. Sounds like a good system of queueing players. I do think it would be nice to let us know our location in the list, so that we can plan our availability if necessary. That is, if I'm at the top I'll know to keep some evenings open, but if I've recently played and am at the bottom I won't need to.

2015-01-28 14:41:20 +0000 UTCSo no roll20 via hangouts? Ah well I can deal with it. 1. Fine with both, though I have had better luck with Hangouts in the past 2 No problem 3. Probably Base raiders out of the list you have since I have yet to play besides owning it, but I am pretty flexible with systems as long as the learning curve isn't too heavy. 4. What time of the day are you most likely to run these anyways?
Daniel Whitmer
2015-01-28 13:43:15 +0000 UTC1. Whichever - both are good. 2. No worries. 3. Trail of Cthulhu please yes please please yes 4. No, but congrats Ross and team for hitting $500 a month!
Jonnygadfly
2015-01-28 13:21:33 +0000 UTCHangouts w/ Dice Stream is the way to go. As far as games, anything quick and easy to run would be best; Call of Cthulhu is probably the best choice
Christopher Reed
2015-01-28 12:57:31 +0000 UTCSounds like a fair system. And, congratulations on hitting $500/month! 1. Whichever is easier on the recording end is fine. 2. No problem. 3. Any of the systems listed would be great. 4. When are you planning to start? No rush, just curiosity.
Richard C Beaulieu
2015-01-28 10:31:52 +0000 UTChangouts sounds like the better option.
Ray Cox
2015-01-28 07:52:49 +0000 UTC1. Hangouts 2.NP 3. Base Raiders 4. Na
