I'm surprised that people aren't mentioning the other fact of physical copies, which is that you can borrow, lend, and sell them. You have SO much more control over the product. Of course these companies would love for you to buy only brand-new copies that you can't then sell or lend to someone else. The ability to sell games I no longer want to play is a big factor in me buying almost only physical. Also very much enjoyed buying a used PS4 at the end of its life and getting excellent $20CAD games.

Videogamedunkey made some good points in "Video Game Pricing" video about it. Games are much cheaper now. Over 150$ in today's money for many Nintendo titles isn't worth manual and physical release. Most people tend to value boxed games and virtual copies at quite similar level and even accounting for that, there are still matters of growing labor intensity, much higher wages for programmers and longer development times.
