A good alternative title to this episode should be "Grandma's Zoom Funeral"

Great observation. I hate this "not ethnic" enough or this pressure that you should enjoy something just because is racially diverse, even when is not good art, let alone great art, just to not be seen as racist/bigot. I really rather more people engage with great art from all cultures, than with this homogenised version, pastiche version of "poc" as one sub unity of humans that all think the same. It's very condescending. Don't even get me started on Ben Shapiro's take on art, or worst, the critical drinker 🤢 this type of rethoric is as damaging as the so- called "woke" ideology for the simple fact that is non educated even in the classics they pretend to celebrate - Luiza

The Cinema Cartography

I remember hearing Neil Degrasse Tyson talk about how he doesn't like identifying as a 'black scientist' and wants to be seen as simply a scientist. I started thinking about the film "American Fiction" which much like you I didn't think was amazing, but made some pretty succinct points on contemporary racism. I wonder how many black writers, or female artists, haven't gotten their big break because they're not telling stories about their race or gender. On the other hand those artists also feel pressure from others in their community, and can sometimes get backlash for not being 'ethnic' enough, so I agree with you on all your points. The reason I brought up the representation thing last time, is because there was a lot of bigotry that came from people who don't know what they're talking about. You two love Jeanne Dielman, but there's all these grifters who have never heard of Jeanne Dielman and upset because it's a feminist film. My issue with people like Ben Shapiro or The Critical Drinker, is not so much there politics, but the fact that they don't know shit about movies outside of Star Wars or Marvel. These are the people claiming that the Sight and Sound list has an agenda which I don't believe. Again the list is curated by votes anyway. If there was an agenda the list would be filled with Ghostbusters 2016 and Tyler Perry's Madea's Big Fucking Funeral Orgy.
