Episode 37 - Friends.

0:00 Discussing Eminem's new album/Artists that create their own problems
37:28 The reading of our world without context/Tying everything to contemporary society/Reading is still the most important thing a person can do

56:45 The podcast after this point is a very personal discussion about loneliness and friendship. It's a much more serious turn in the podcast that we normally take, but as we always say, being completely honest and always being ourselves is very important to us. I hope that this conversation resonates with some of you.
Take care.

I do feel that many contemporary discussions lead to dehumanization. When feminism was a hot topic on the Chinese internet a few years ago, there were a lot of discussions about gay men marrying straight women and also about surrogacy. It led to a consensus that gay men are also oppressors of women, using women as tools to carry on lineage. I'm not saying this conclusion is not valid in some way given the context of China. But oftentimes so-called feminist discussion turned out just homophobic. The dilemma of a gay man in modern Chinese society was mostly overlooked in these progressive discussions. Then I watched a movie called The River by Tsai Ming-liang. It's a story about a family living in Taipei Taiwan, both the dad and the son are gay. The mother in the film is not a victim at all, and she lives a far less oppressive life than her husband and son. Even in a very contemporary lens this film will offer great insights. It's beyond that though. This is truly a masterpiece, highly recommend, definitely in my top 20. I've never seen a film depict day to day east asian family life this real. Life is just like the river at the beginning of the film, it's not running rapidly but also not dead, just a river in the city. The sexual desire in the film is not provocative at all but also not disgusting. The family sometimes feels disconnected but they still care about each other. I'm curious about how you guys feel about this type of family life. I saw critics say the disconnection and communication breakdown is harrowing. For me it's like yeah we don't talk that much but we're doing ok. Also, I think we should recommend things in the comment sections more :)

Did anyone else hear Lewis hurt himself and mutter 'ow'. Also Eminem makes more music about how he's controversial, than he does actually being controversial.
