Para Luiza: tem Mate Leão aqui na Bahia (e no resto do Brasil, eu imagino), mas nunca vi muita gente bebendo ele por aqui. Acho que é coisa de carioca mesmo 🤣🤣🤣

And yes, as a Brazilian, I can confirm: Kiss totally stole Secos and Molhados’ swag. I still love LZ too, but they should’ve had someone told them that “y’all gonna need to give Willie Dixon or Joan Baez or whoever their credits or y’all are gonna look shady.” Even Jimi Hendrix disliked them for that reason, but he still loved John Bonham as a drummer, which is a testament to their musical prowess. I too spent many years without re-listening to Zep’s records, but about three years ago I came back to them and I still love them, despite everything.

I also strongly dislike Blow-Up, but I love the scene where the Yardbirds, with both Jimmy Page and Jeff Beck on guitars, are playing, but Jeff is having troubles with his sound. It’s fan service for rock nerds like me, I know, but fuck it.

Focusing on “Coolness” might be the most dangerous thing while making or criticizing a movie: Godard movies are peak cool (I always imagined myself as the main characters in his movies when I first discovered him lol), but the worldview of his work is so utterly devoid of anything; but you still can be “Cool”, whatever that means, and have some soul, the best example of that being Fellini.

Just started listening, but I’ll say it already: another 11/10 title! 🤣

Holy shit, I thought I was the only one that didn’t like Roeg’s Don’t Look Now. I vividly remember when I sat down to watch it for the first time being blown away by the opening. Such a visually impactful, haunting opening that sets up the entire film. And then, it simply blue balled for most of the film with uninteresting characters and a goofy as hell ending with that creature or whatever I couldn’t take seriously. I haven’t been keeping with much with this year’s Cannes compared with other years simply because the main competition looked way less interesting than prior years. One thing I kept up with was when Studio Ghibli was there to receive their honorary Palme D’Or. This is actually quite historic since it’s the first time a collective studio has won this award since it’s mainly for individuals like an actor or director. But I’m very happy that this now goes for Ghibli. If there is one studio that should get something that prestigious it should be them. Was nice to see Goro pick up that award for them. Literally the first time I watched the prequels was on YouTube just of the select clips because I didn’t have the DVDs but even in shitty YouTube quality when I watched through the whole Revenge of the Sith climax as a 11 year old that stuck with me. It’s easily the best of the prequels. Of course the music in all the whole series is amazing. But for me, Attack of the Clones might have my favorite music score despite it probably being the worst film. But even then looking back now it still has that short scene where Anakin sees his mother again after 10 years was unironically very effective. Very much it reminds me now why Wagner’s opera have their charm when you actually look up the stories of Lohengrin or The Ring Cycle. I say this as a Wagner fan. I can admit they’re sometimes goofy as hell with over the top characters but that style feels so sincere under his approach and I wouldn’t want it any other way. There’s a reason why Lucas called it a "space opera". Hmm. I have actually tried to think about an actual scene I hate from a film I like. The closest one I can of right now is in Douglas Sirk’s 'Imitation of Life'. Not a film I love but I do think is good especially the end funeral. But my god, the scene where Sarah’s boyfriend shows up for like one scene just to assault her was cringe inducing. The shitty jazz music that’s used to imply some sort of violent action which it seems was just something films did back then, the actor’s performance was just bad in general. Just so incredibly tone deaf. That’s a prime example for me. By the way, Imagine if we got the timeline where Mick Jagger played Alex DeLarge. I mean A Clockwork Orange is of my favorite films ever and pretty much is why my love of cinema blossomed and why I got here to this day but man that would be fucking hilarious to see and hear that man speak nadsat.

Esteban Rodriguez

Give me a huge, wasteful film with way too many ideas over a huge, wasteful film with no ideas any day. I take your point about Coppola not really being an independent, but he is making personal films that come from his heart. That's more than any of the hired guns over at Marvel can say. Also, I think Tetro was quite good. No masterpiece by any means, but quite good.
