23. Post-Oscars

Comments

just watched poor things last night. at first I thought, it can't possibly be that bad, I like the premise and the director and the actors and it looks amazing (i still feel that way about it tbh), surely it wouldn't be bad. holy shit you guys were right. i had the book on my tbr but now i don't even wanna give that a chance.

This is a generalization - but the Oscars, are really, akin to nothing more than an Employee of the Month insider pat on the back that is given to whichever studio/director/star/whatever brought home the most bacon. Using them as a benchmark of quality is a losing game.

David Kodeski

I don't think this movie has left anyone indifferent.

Wonderful comments on life and authentic living. I won't bang on about my own circumstance, again, but it's wildly resonant. I may have lost my way in recent years.... but my passion is real and searching, and I am reminding myself it has VALUE. I demand more and encourage others to do the same. I am taking every opportunity to expose myself to a wider world and broader frame of reference in my current journey is wild... and very exciting. Your channel is such an enjoyable companion for that! :-) I encourage anyone to fight, kick and scream for life and for the things you love! And to get involved with the world. There are a lot of fucking stupid people out there.... but there is rich, exciting, hopeful, wonderful tapestry of humanity too. It's priceless, precious and so very fleeting.

Interesting. I felt some emotions when I watched Poor Things. Superficially, I found the journey of our protagonist kinda fun... dare I say I rooted for her, related to her, wanted her to flourish..... but the whole experience was really very hollow for me. It showed me nothing except what was on the surface, their desire to explore something of the human experience failed, and it had little to no point of view. It looked good though. Very pretty.

It's great, isn't it! I can almost imagine myself wheeling that movie out every Christmas now. It's thoroughly charming

I totally agree..... even with Lanthimos' other movies... Lobster, the Favourite, and the worst of all Killing of the Sacred Deer. Despite my dislike of the other films, I went it with an excited and open mind. Poor Things was SUCH a hollow experience. The space it left felt larger because the performances were good (though I HATED Ruffalo in it passionately) and it LOOKED so good - colour, texture, costume. The design was charming; a feast for the eyes even. But it told me nothing. It expressed nothing. It was a failure.

Curious thoughts on Tiktok and that kind of video. The first thought I would have is 'is this video simply to promote the show?' - and what amount of research and exposure tricks go into getting those videos out there and viewed. I struggle to also see sincerity on a platform like Tiktok, when its filled with such a level of repetitive and mediocre nonsense..... and that's not to mention the manipulative and dangerous side of it all. If something is genuine, if a story is true, I could not imagine going to Tiktok to express that. As a side note, those kind of sensational shows worry me. People sharing their stories about what horrible things they experience move very quickly into very judgments, fear and supposition about people's lives, intentions and experiences. Backed by something as out of control and controlling as social media influence, anything can be said about anyone without any evidence or credibility. ANYWHO I have always struggled with the Oscars. I love them from a mostly historic point of view. But in current terms, I tend not to get too wrapped up. I enjoy when I film I like gets a nod or a win, just because I know it will mean more exposure to a wider audience. I find it hard to see through that shiny LA insincerity (like you find on those horrible, suffocating talk shows where as the audience you're meant to believe the 'chat' is real?!) This whole 'snub' knee jerk term around the Oscars winds me the fuck up, so moreso I try not to get involved in 'current' Oscars. It's akin to cancel culture to me. Barbie/Toy movie trend..... wasn't Barbie preceded by Lego, rather than Barbie starting one? (unless we're talking 'girls' toys).... They were big movies and the first one was great fun!

Ay that was actually pretty good. I go to a short film festival here in my local city ever couple months & this is much much better than most. If I had one suggestion it’d be to get rid of the subtitles but that’s just a preference. Really great work, would love to see you post more of your shorts.

At the risk of embarrassing myself, I will post one of my short films below: https://youtu.be/oTXjzNm3bjY?si=YpmZZE5M8ElYV2ti Thank you for encouraging people in here to share their work. This was my first short film. While I have matured since this was made, I’m proud of the end result given the lack of a budget at all.

Jason

Thank you for seeing through Poor Things. It was an abysmal experience and I say this as a fan of Lanthimos.

Jason

Excited to hear your thoughts on The Holdovers. It definitely isn’t Payne’s best, but it’s very enjoyable.

Michael Sacco

Funnily enough, what Lewis says about Poor Things is pretty much what I felt about Trier's The Idiots and Greenaway's The cook, etc. (which were the last movies I watched from both directors as I had enough with them). I guess we could argue forever whether art is subjective or not, but emotional reactions definitely are. I loved Poor Things and very much appreciated its kamikaze approach, as much as I understand why some people may be turned off (or even triggered) by it.

M.A. Garcias

thanks for all that you do, always

Hahaha what a passionate rant against Poor Things. Couldn’t disagree more but love to here other opinions.
