Episode 21 - Lewis Was Alone

In today's episode, we discuss a number of things from chess, Jeffrey Epstein's Spotify list, the American novel and more. That is until Luiza has to leave and Lewis conducts an impromptu episode for the final 45 minutes. I hope (really hope), you enjoy.

Super late comment but I am an avid cigar enjoyer! My local cigar lounge actually has a couple of tables with chess that I play very occasionally. I’d love to learn Chess someday as the mental aptitude to play it well is a great challenge. My equivalent to Chess is competitive Magic the Gathering especially the format I play (Commander). Multiplayer format, decks, archetypes, win conditions, etc. are all SO complicated. You’re basically playing against three people, your plans, combo lines and points of interaction, etc force you to pivot between slow and fast thinking

One more comment... I promise... Do we truly believe that someone 'binge watching' [eugh - hate that phrase] a show over 6 hours is giving their full attention to it? Nah mate. EDIT.... you just mentioned Letterboxd. I am glad you mentioned that as yet another list and part of the problem. I have convinced myself I need to keep logging films I watch. But every time I go on, I see films I have not made time for yet or to add to my list...... worst of all are the trite, insipid, insincere, irreverent, like grabbing 'reviews'. They actually make me sick at this point. You know what, I need to go de-activate my account now, don't I! EDIT EDIT.... sorry you have to deal with such personal comments, like you mentioned. I can't imagine what a shift you've had to deal with when moving to including yourselves in your content. I bet it's changed some of the stuff you receive. I made one positive comment about how you both have amazing shiny hair and even that for me crossed a line/made me feel a bit uncomfortable. Stay amazing! Stay brave!

Interesting comments on brain work / focus / fatigue..... The first thing that came to mind from my own experience is purpose..... but not just purpose... it's more security in that purpose.... whether that be being productive/creative and it flowing..... or being content in that moment doing what you're doing..... the other side of the coin to that is something driven by panic or fear..... sometimes trying to hang on or force purpose and creativity can lead to some of that mentioned exhaustion. I find it can be a fine line to tread between engaging and flourishing naturally.... and tightening a grip on something that isn't quite there in that moment or being controlled by drive. Learning to loosen that grip and reconfigure your brain when something is working against you versus just pushing a bit harder and reaching a breakthrough! I find the only way to know is to practice is honesty, self awareness and the boldness to make a choice..... I can get overwhelmed with OCD to the point of not being able to do much of any value at all, so it's good I get to practice a different way (as best as I can anyway) :-)

Haha.... random discussion... how Epstein spells his playlists.... I wonder if an element of that is to do with our reliance on auto-correct. Some text boxes are void of auto-capitalising letters and auto-correct. We underestimate a person's reliance on these and their ability to notice/care to capitalise letters and spell words correctly. His musical choices don't seem weird to me. Some people just don't get music or have any passion for it. That's what I get from his choices. And the fact that music streaming services have this ability to sap any joy, passion and curiosity from a listener's musical choices. I'm surprised Taylor Swift and Ed Sheeran aren't on there to be honest! I don't think it means very much. Because there is evidence there to suggest it didn't mean much to him.

Would love to see a Deep Dive on ‘Catcher in the Rye’ and ‘On the Road’!

We definitely need a Cinema Cartography chess club!

Just finished the episode tonight. I decided to make this a double feature for myself, dividing it between the regular podcast for one night and saving Lewis's solo act for another. Listening to you ramble and narrate your train of thought made for a fun change of pace.

Gang of Four's Entertainment! is so great and I completely agree that the revival was watered down and bland in comparison.

Yay Tim Dillon :) The great thing about Tim is that he's a great comedian and also comes across like a great guy. Not that I would care if he wasn't, but some comedians are arrogant or aggressive, and Tim is just sweet (bet he would hate me saying that). I loved hearing your thoughts on "Catcher in the Rye" "On the Road". As a writer with a strong aversion to contemporary literature, I wanted to ask what you guys thought of "Where the Crawdads Sing," if you're familiar with it. I've heard people say the style reminds them of Faulkner but since I haven't read either I can't judge. By the way, I remembering seeing last year that London's Prince Charles Cinema's screening of "Sátántangó" had sold out its tickets weeks in advance. These things happen! :) "Janet from Grimsby" - so true!

If I had to pick one piece of art that I grew to love less (I'm gonna cheat but who gives a damn), it'd have to be that whole "Post-Punk Revival"/Indie thing of the 00's that encompassed bands such as The Strokes and Arctic Monkeys; for me, even though Rock 'n' Roll can (and often should) embrace the energy of teenagehood and early adulthood, my problem is that the bands of the period never actually made something as wildy original and transgressive as the old-school Post-Punk bands, such as Public Image Ltd. and Gang of Four. And looking back at it, I don't like the idea of Art School/Boarding School bourgeois kids pretending that they're Morrissey or John Lydon without going through what they've gone through.

I’ve heard Luis Rubiales has been really going """method""" for one of the lead performances in this film. I think it’s for the Bishop character.

Can't wait for the Salò remake set in the Epstein island soundtracked by Tiesto and Pitbul. We making out of the sex trafficking ring with this one!
