The Golden Age of Japanese Cinema

I’m curious of the interplay with Japans Golden Age, and the other major coinciding avant-garde art movement in Japan during the same post-war years, a movement known as Gutai (1952-1974). Gutai is probably most well known today in the west through the action paintings of member Kazuo Shiraga, who would execute his famous “performance paintings” by hanging over raw canvas laid on the ground and quickly work thick globs of impasto oil paint feverishly with his bare feet. In addition to traditional mediums like painting and sculpture, the art collective also involved much conceptual work, public performances and exhibitions, happenings, publications, etc. Some critics panned the movement and refused to take it seriously, others crowned it. I wonder what was the response from serious Japanese filmmakers at the time. Particularly because today both movements are highly regarded in the arts critically and commercially. Here’s the Gutai groups brief manifesto, by artist and collective founder YOSHIHARA JIRŌ… http://web.guggenheim.org/exhibitions/gutai/data/manifesto.html

I watched Tokyo Story tonight. Blown away by it's tenderness and it's relevance. The added info about how the Japanese film industry worked at the time helped elevate my experience 🤌🏻
