Interesting. Been meaning to get into more of Serra’s films after seeing Pacifiction which I really enjoyed. Liberte is actually the one I’m most looking forward to.

Esteban Rodriguez

It’d be really interesting to get your thoughts on cinema adapting literature texts, especially an atmosphere as elusive and transgressive as the one in Sade. Do you think Pasolini succeeds? If you’ve seen Liberté by Albert Serra I’d be interested to know what you think is different with their interpretations of the author’s text/philosophy, and if you think one is better and why. It’s definitely not my favourite of his films but Albert Serra speaks very eloquently about this, he says that Sadism crucially needs a sense of innocence that is difficult to attain because it’s paradoxically achieved by violently pushing against the other’s limits (a freedom attained by applying its opposite, essentially). I think Serra is amazing at generating this innocence, a feeling in the air that “anything could happen next”, of openness and being at the mercy of something uncontrollable, if at the same time totally banal. But I haven’t seen Salò yet so can’t compare :) this will be the perfect excuse to do so. Looking forward to hearing ur thoughts on it!

Salò. What do you each think of Pasolini the film maker, of whom Moravia e De Filippo called a Poet, each desperate at his cruel death.
