I find it interesting trying to dissect how much of Mishima's ultra-nationalist ideology was wrapped in his own personal, psychological hangups. Obviously the desire for a strong central state and dominating military finds its complement in Mishima's desire to supplement his own (perceived) lack of masculinity. I get what you both were discussing in the idea that maybe Japan shouldn't just blindly embrace Western consumerism, but on the other hand military invasions and mass murder also aren't a great result of one's personal ideology either. On the aspect of Mishima's final day, the more I've thought about it, the more I wonder about how theatrical the whole thing was. If Mishima was actually trying to incite a coup that would spur the JSDF to reinstate the Emperor to his former position, his efforts were so incompetent and half-baked I almost have to believe his suicide was actually the point of it all.
