Deep Dive #7 - YI YI

Hi everyone.

The winner of our 'childhood' themed Deep Dive was Edward Yang's familial masterpiece Yi Yi (A One and a Two).

We hope you enjoy the discussion.

Deep Dive #7 - YI YI

I related to that anecdote about film school. Whenever an instructor mentioned a 'rule' I thought of about ten films that break that rule. "Cut every five seconds" " Tell that to Tarkovsky"

I really enjoyed this discussion. My first experience with Edward Yang was with Taipei Story and I fell in love with his style with that film. Yi Yi is my favorite of his though. I want to give Bright Summer Day another chance but had a hard time with it going into the fourth hour. It's films like these that inspire me to be a storyteller and filmmaker. I loved your guy's discussion on going inside yourself and discovering the stories that want to come through you. As I have begun outlining my next feature film I have found the more I just let the story flow out of me the way it wants to be told makes it so much easier to write it. In the past when I've tried constructing my stories in the traditional three-act structure way I usually would get lost and feel stifled and eventually give up writing it. Of course, I have yet to write anything significant at this point in my career as an artist, but I find myself more motivated in discovering who I am as an artist and a storyteller rather than any sort of commercial success or fame.
