She didn’t need the zone

You can show people the zone, can present the truth to them but it doesn’t mean they will change, in fact likely not. It takes something special to accept the truth, which is something the stalkers wife has

I do see the religious connection here stronger than I did the first time I saw this years ago. I think Tarkovsky wanted to show us that experiencing art is like experiencing the religious miracle. And thus his struggle with art and religion are the same, and so is ours. The lack of religion in the world doesn’t coincidently correlate to the lack of understanding of art in the world because it comes from the same place and it’s that place in our mind or spirit that isn’t visited anymore and I think that place is the zone.

Tarkovsky is porcupine

I'm late to listening to this, but yeah the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. games are great. There were 3 in total - Shadow of Chernobyl, Clear Sky, and Call of Pripyat. They've become cult classics and are prime examples of Euro-jank. They have really deep gameplay and good game design, but tend to be extremely buggy (although the new Windows Vista didn't help things there) with fairly poor UI and an extreme lack of hand-holding. They were very technically impressive for the time, too. There's still active communities for the series creating mods and community patches to help "finish" the games beyond what the original developers were capable of. I think there are certainly similarities between the film and one of the games, at least. I can't remember which, but one of them involved reaching a room in the center of the zone where you could be granted a wish, or something along those lines. It's been a long time since I've played them. I think that's as far as similarities go. I'm sure the developers would have been heavily inspired by the book, film, and the actual event considering they were an Ukrainian team. I'm really enjoying these Patreoncasts, btw. Love what you're doing both in this and the video essays ♥
