During WWII, the US launched a mission to kill Isoroku Yamamoto, the architect of the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, which only went so well due to Yamamoto really not caring about his own safety and ignoring constant warnings from his subordinates.

For instance: in Japan, if you wanted a taxi to stop for you immediately, you could hold up five fingers. This said "I will pay you five sen just for stopping". Yamamoto would do this while wearing his dress uniform and gloves, then give the driver 4 sen. If the driver protested, he would take off the glove, show his missing finger, and deadpan say, 'I clearly signaled four.'

I was expecting some anecdotes about Yamamoto, be use there are a lot of them. Like him being a prolific gambler to the point of sometimes going into debt or betting on war related stuff. I have to go and find my notes I wrote but there are good ones.
