Fuck ICE

Alistair

Good robot show with characters as the main focus is gundam iron blood orphans

Logan Brown

Ghost in the shell stand alone complex pls and thanks

Justin vanDyke

Big O. Big robots and slightly impenetrable philosophy.

Michael Retford

Having only just started watching this and I’m on episode 3… I didn’t get the episode title reference at first and it frightened me big time…

mumbles march

I've only seen some ads and stuff but it looks really cool

OleKyShark

I'd like to mention the big O for a future series. The vibe is like if Bruce Wayne had a Gundam instead of his batman shit. It's a weird series but I loved it.

OleKyShark

They are both 2 x 25 ep seasons but gundam 00 and iron blooded orphans are really interesting early then late war on terror commentary that I think you guys would dig.

Steven K

Black Lagoon has no robots, it has military stuff and is a mirror of Evangelion

Charlie Lightning

Came here to say this, absolutely really, really interesting themes there, would be interesting to hear the crew talk about it. It honestly would pair well with Eva as a double feature, since it's also a robot show that ain't really about the robots, it's about the trauma.

Travis Sampiero

Joe’s insight on the plot development is so on point. I love this

Scrotong

I also watched Eva for the first time when I was like 13, so this is a great time for me as someone approaching 30. You guys should watch Gurren Laggan or Patlabor after this though. Origional Gundam is good but it’s long as fuck.

johnny bray

Goddamn sorry you got picked up by ICE fuck em dude

Steven Assarian

Hey there is a second non-pedo option to choose, and it IS Ramiel.

Arueshalae Table Building Society

TRENCH CRUSADE MENTION!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Arueshalae Table Building Society

Brave Bang Bravern. I'll let Mother's Basement sell it, but it's gayer Top Gun in mechs: https://youtu.be/J_nUXKTbWto?si=io3sTXE2lMLxwzys

Jeff Erickson

You should check out Buddy Complex, Aladnoah Zero, or Heavy Object for good non gundam mecha anime. Or you could do the BattleTech Animated Series, which is readily available on YouTube in glorious HD.

Zachary Eggebeen

I second this. Not only is it a GAINAX show. It's also directed by Hideaki Anno. Gunbusters is literally the prototype for NGE.

Jonathan Åkerblom

Do Blue Gender next :) While we’re watching very uncomfortable mecha.

Joseph Pementell

You HAVE to watch Gurren Lagann after Evangelion. Preferably right after, because it's a post-deconstruction answer to Eva.

Rock_Punchgroin

SDF Macross

John Marshall

Votoms is great, but about twice as long. I think 08th MS Team would be really good! I'm also really fond of Mellowlink which is a short spin off from Votoms. You get to see a guy taking out robots with a big gun.

Centaur Fox

I understand the hesitation, but I do think you should just launch head first into the Rebuilds after EoE. That said, if you're still open to suggestions for the next show. Gundam: 8th MS Team.

Just a Fish

WTF!?! You got detained by ICE? Fuck those guys, all of them. I keep telling supporters of this nonsense that if they can do it to them, they can do it to you. How is proof of that.

Hunter Reese

Big O is really good

Omnivac

I am not sure if Bubblegum Crisis: Tokyo 2042 counts as mecha, but it does give you multiple opportunities to scream "ugh, just talk to her, you useless lesbian."

Em Gravesong

Super Dimension Fortress Macross Macross Plus Macross Frontier

Matthew Mercier

I have been looking for a reliable place to watch Blue Gender since seeing a trailer for it on a Buu Saga DBZ VHS I rented from Hollywood Video 2 decades ago.

Mutual Aid Miniatures

Cowboy Bebop, just do it man

FreyaFez

Joe, you would LOVE Girls und Panzer.

Kyle Clark

HE HWHAT?!?!

Kyle Clark

One small trivia bit that I found funny. The two battleships used to fight that Angel were the two Iowa class battleships that were cancelled at the end of WW2, Illinois and Kentucky; the names popped up on the tactical maps on the bridge.

Daniel Hood

Everyone is saying it, but want to reinforce. Gurren Lagann, great show that you guys should watch during the break before Eva Rebuilds!

Callum Laughlin

Joe, if you want robot movies, check out Patlabor and Appleseed. They're movies instead of whole series. And Patlabor has mecha revolvers.

Noblesse Oblahaj

If you're looking for anime mecha shows, i gotta give a shoutout to "Heavy Object". The light novel is way better, since it has the space to really dig into the worldbuilding and the characters end up as much more fully fleshed, but the anime is fine enough.

Snooder87

I was gonna say the same thing. Plus it’s just more Gainax!

Nezvar1

Joe, check out the wargame Konflikt 47.

Dan

Everyone's saying the Obvious Answers here, but I'm gonna put forward some Less Obvious ones - Flag: mecha anime from an embedded photographers POV - VOTOMS: incredibly long but but a great look at grunts and lower powered combat - Yukikaze: less mecha, more planes, but a short (3/4 episode?) OVA about a classic Japanese scifi novel

howl's moving pictures by rush

I am campaigning for Gurren Lagann. It's not as deep as Evangelion, but it's lots of fun and the power scaling is insane.

Zachary Kaufman

kaji is the any major dude who tells you, from steely dan

Luke Simecek

Great episode, Joe. It was the second best thing to drop on 9/10

Noblesse Oblahaj

Joe, was there a part of you that wanted to look at the pretend soldiers that detained you and say: "Sorry, you'll have to speak up. Army veteran, my hearing loss is service related."

Noblesse Oblahaj

It's already been mentioned, but I will absolutely recommend Gurren Lagann. A lot of the same people worked on both Eva and GL (iirc), and I think it makes for an interesting comparison to the two very different kinds of mecha anime you've watched thus far. Namely, it's as good as Eva, but it's also about as stupid as G-Gundam, and I mean that as a compliment.

Bill McFarley

I'd love it if you watched Gunbusters. It was the GAINAX mech anime that made GAINAX, and it is nice and short. Patlabor the Movie and Patlabor 2 are some truly interesting pieces of mech media with some very realistic political drama. There's also a ton of great UC Gundam to watch. I really think you'll like 0080 War in the Pocket, 0083, and The 8th MS Team. Very diverse set of series which are very grounded - maybe a good comparison to G Gundam's gonzoness.

Jonathan Reiter

Energy drink and pre workout. Joe you're built of stronger stuff than I am. It's a bad combo. Every time I do that I end up running to the shitter by the time I get to the gym.

Danilov Sto

https://youtu.be/tJdgErAfiRQ?si=_J2F1_SzjYWostqw "Get in the gosh dang robot Bobby! That boy just ain't right"

Malcontent Battery Pack

Metropolis 2001 is a robot anime, but not mecha anime that I highly recommend.

Saint Muerte

At least we now know the answer to the question "Are Armenians white?"

Austin Arminio

LLBR is my favorite. Look forward to it every month.

Bad_pun_here

Does speed racer count as mecha? Because that show is absolutely insane

Inconspicuous old man and mime

FUCK ICE

Animal Crossing Sovereign Citizen

Oh my God, that would be so fucking hype. Gurren Lagann is like if Eva was made by someone who wasn't depressed, it lines up so perfectly with the themes of this show. It's so fun.

NowhereMan661

This series has given me something to look forward that I really care about every month. Thank you both.

NowhereMan661

Holy shit finding out joe played persona made my day. Everyday this podcast gets more and more incredible

Arkos

I really love hearing you guys going through a series you can really sink your teeth into! it's fun to hear both of you giving earnest art analysis. I feel like Gurren Lagen would be another great fit for the LLBR format

Paul Hansen

You should watch The Irresponsible Captain Tylor. It's about the world's luckiest bastard running a space submarine. If you want to get serious, watch the Barefoot Gen movie.

Billy Suter

Oh, Asuka absolutely intentionally went into Shinji's room. It will become clear as the series goes on that these two have feelings for each other, but due to their age, inexperience, and fears, neither is able to act on those feelings and open up about them in a straightforward or healthy way. Asuka is stubborn and prideful, and can't bring herself to actually tell Shinji directly, and expects him to pick up on the hints. Shinji meanwhile, is dense as a rock and incredibly awkward, and can't pick up on these hints, even if he also feels similarly. Asuka going to Shinji's room was an aggressive and blunt attempt to provoke him into doing something. Obviously this is weird and uncomfortable, but it makes sense that someone like Asuka would do something like that. She wants to be acknowledged and affirmed, but can't be open and honest about it, so she does weird things like this because she doesn't know how else to make Shinji make the first move. And Shinji for his part has no idea what she's doing, as he has no experience at all with girls or really other people at all. These are two incredibly immature children trying and failing to express their feelings without actually allowing themselves to be vulnerable and allow others in, which is kind of the whole point of the show. In my opinion, Shinji and Asuka's relationship is the heart and soul of Evangelion.

NowhereMan661

ICE chasing Joe with the Soviet ethnicity chart.

Inconspicuous old man and mime

The two episodes with Asuka are actually really clever in how they integrate her into the story. It's already been 7 episodes, and we as the audience feel like we're getting a hold of how the story works and feels, and then we are introduced to this new character who is completely different from everyone we've seen already, which normally would feel really janky, but instead by having her need to work directly and intimately with our protagonist Shinji, we and the characters are able to get to know and accept her much more naturally.

NowhereMan661

Something to consider covering would be Giant Robo, the Day the Earth Stood Still. It was directed by the same guy as G Gundam.

Daniel Fantis

He's right. But it is hard as balls. Like imagine Pokemon but for sadists.

Steven Rutland

As someone who works in DC, Joe so sorry. Yeah we’ve been having “fun” the last month harassing and running interference with the Feds.

Austin Arminio

Yeah, it's so fun. Perfect combination of historical nerd obsessions and Warhammer 40k Grimdark absurdity.

NowhereMan661

Tom don't waste your time with persona *respectfully* SMT V rips and lets you skip the high school simulator

Zach Sampson

Trench Crusade is so incredibly based

Alex Varrus

I think Blue Gender would work for ya'll.

cory Fountain

I (Chicagoan) wore a Tigers beanie through most of my highschool and early college, it was my favorite hat.

Jsuman

God I hope no teens are listening, they don’t need to know what White Monster addiction sounds like

Joseph

The greatest character of all time has arrived. When I watched this series for the first time and Asuka appeared, my first thoughts were "why is she such a bitch?" But as the show went on and we learn more about her, she became my absolute favorite character.

NowhereMan661

They knew you were American. No one would've lied about being from Detroit

Arkos
