2025-07-17 17:11:53 +0000 UTCWhile there is also definitely a much more concise statement you can make over the whole show as opposed to the first two episodes, I was trying to bring what I remembered specifically to the first couple episodes aha, since I didn't want to like, prefigure anything the LLBR crew had already planned to say. I also think the idea that Shinji's treatment is fundamentally different than his coworkers isn't really all that superficial, and it's certainly not about who gets screentime. Rather, it's about how the women characters are used when they get screentime to manipulate Shinji. I left it specifically at Rei being wheeled out on the hospital bed directly in front of Shinji since that is what happens in these two episodes, but expanding that, you can also include the sexual aggression Shinji is encouraged to show to Rei in the groping scene (and Asuka, who hasn't entered the cast yet), which seems to be directly counter to Rei's desire/lack of desire for any intimate relationship with Shinji. You can look at how Rei, who has been commanding EVA units for far longer and should by seniority be preferred for command, is instead relegated as a subordinate to Shinji instantly. You can look at how Misato is set up to be manipulating and using Shinji under the guise of a mother and one also-very-creepy scene again later in the show. Gendo's use of women (and insodoing, denying them agency and exposing them to both militant and sexual violence to build this construct to contain and constrain Shinji) to affect his control over Shinji and the rest of the world (prefiguring some of the Instrumentality stuff) seems pretty obviously patriarchal in nature (and Gendo is quite literally a patriarch). A sort of system of roles based on Gender for the ultimate benefit of the Patriarch.

2025-07-17 12:45:44 +0000 UTCI am distantly recalling a feminist critique, and I apologize in advance because I think I read this at some point in high school and have no memory of where I read it, of Eva where Rei and Asuka (both women) are always ordered around and effectively dismissed, while Shinji is set up to have women placed around him to lure him into being conventionally masculine (emotionally impassive, "strong", finding it very easy to kill). Something very manipulative about the Episode 1 scene where Shinji is convinced to get in the Robot is when Rei is wheeled out right in front of him on her hospital bed to make him feel guilty about putting her through that again (also, make him feel guilty that a "girl" could do it but he can't, apparently.) So the effect is that Shinji is kinda always getting the (extremely manipulative) kid glove treatment while his two women squadmates and coworkers are treated like shit.

There was some random ass channel hiding in the weird religious channels on Sky Digital (or the dodgy box thereof) that for some unknowable reason showed two hours of anime from 11pm to 1am on Tuesdays and Thursdays only. It showed Eva, Cowboy Bebop and two other random anime I can't remember. It was some weird fucking times back then but I made it work. All that to say, looking forward to this season.
