The US forces pilots to use a plane they can barely fly to bomb a Dutch powerplant with bombs that don't explode, guarded by a German garrison that knows they are coming. It does not go well.

I closed my eyes, thought of a bomber, and got a freaking Lancaster. Bro I don't even like Lancasters >.>

Kuma Flamewar

Record setting "Not to get off topic" from Nate. Not even 1m.

Tom

Thanks for getting the Bulk & Skull theme stuck in my head

Romeo Rage

My grandfather was in B26s. Great to hear more about how they sucked.

K. D. Campbell

Long before crew resource management was the thing

theoneGalen

Jin-Roh is amazing

Jacob Minassian

Also. Praise Hera & stuff & maybe she makes your horsies Diomedan... though releasing people-eating immortal horses might be war crimes

Gil the Gilded Dragon

What to do when Zeus steals your twink pilots? You do cavalry. Zeus will steal your fuckable young men & bestows IMMORTAL SUPERNATURALLY FAST HORSES Duh. Adittionally promise Poseidon a bull give him a shitter bull, get an anthropophagous supersoldier

Gil the Gilded Dragon

Nate, I flew C-130's we normally do personnel airdrops (static or freefall) at 130 knots. Our stall speeds are much lower... scary lower Very capable aircraft. I am sure you can find the answers on a War Thunder forum... but I still work for the DoD, so I don't want to disappear to a CIA black site. We do everything by "knots" in aviation too. As an AVGeek and military aviator this episode hits so good.

I_like_planes_and_cities

110! that is scary in a C-5... I'll stick to -130's lol

Man Tom Walker is so good, his podcast bigsofttitty.png is also a strong reccomend for anyone who also likes things like Boonta Vista. And 100% on the fast cars having impeccable comedic timing, he'll be in the quietest most random place and suddenly a screaming man in an SUV just precision strikes him in the face

Pete Conneely

The expanse is so good

Raehan Durlabhji

Oh man if you like Chavez and haven't heard them I highly, highly recommend Polvo.

dase

The C-5 was designed with airdrop in mind as well, I've flown it as slow as 110 KIAS, so it probably has better stall characteristics than the Widowmaker

LlamaLlama

regarding jin-roh, i'd confidently say that's a great candidate for a future lions led by robots

Gryphoneer

They had optimism in the late 80s: America was out of the shadow of post-Nam depression, glasnost is in full blown and the Kling - I mean Soviet Union was on its knees, everyone was making money, stock market was going up and up. What could possibly go wrong?

Le Di Chang

Built to Spill slaps!

Panic Enthusiast

Wait, the captain had 80% of his face blown off and the copilot didn’t take control? This explains the rehearsal perfectly.

Hammerthrust Von Sexron

Thank you for the Bulk and Skull reference. Their theme is our generations' Benny Hill.

Panic Enthusiast

It just occurred to me that so many people thought OMD was fronted by two homosexual men because their hit song with the word 'gay' in the title and confusing lyrics (if you didn't know the name of the plane).

Alive Or Trees

"It's kind of like airborne insertions... and it's like for a huge numbers of people sure"... VDV! Take off the strip! 200 men on a one-way trip Didn't even do anti-air suppression Who planned this mission? VDV! In afterlife I meet Fallschirmjagers from Crete!

Guy Incognito

Sometimes you gotta perform a human sacrifice to Huitzilopochtli because you see Zeus take the form of a gaint goose and your engines are down

Ajusco Huerta

Happy birthday then

Nadie Southpaw

I have finally watched Star Trek The Next Generation. It's so good and I think we need more optimistic sci fi instead of "cyberpunk dystopia #38483842838".

Nadie Southpaw

We're gonna take Hiroshima out tonight Yeah, we'll show them what we're all about We're gonna bomb her from Enola Gay We'll let the good times all roll out And if the bomb ain't good, well, it's just too bad We're gonna war crime, no matter what Because the McArthur don't mind at the SWPA If you kill 'em and he wins the front. Nate did this to my brain.

Loquin Britton-Herndon

I feel like not enough people have watched Jin-Roh it's fucking awesome.

dogman

Jorts mention! But not that one.

Alistair

Speaking of gay, the two lead pilots on masters of the air flirt NONSTOP in that fucking show. I thought the pacific was flirty enough but hot damn do they go for it in this new show. Bro grabs other dudes face between his fingers all jokingly and nearly had me fainting. nothing like queer coded war movies 🥵🏳️‍🌈

Thomas Cain

Also, big ups to the Iraqi insurgents who saw Nate's head sticking up out of an unarmored humvee filled to the brim with officers and said, "Too easy, let them pass."

Brandon P

I gotta look into that bomber. That sounds like a real spicy meatball.

Brandon P

Weezer's early demo tapes are better than anything else I've ever heard from that band.

Brandon P

That sounds like it'd be a cool Olympic sport.

Brandon P

PATREON WHY WONT YOU LET ME ADD NEW LINES ON MOBILE!? LET ME MAKE PARAGRAPHS PLEASE!
Just as an aside about airborne insertions - everyone thinks about the big operations, Overlord, Market/Garden, Husky, Avalanche, Crete - but the majority of combat drops during the war were actually small-unit affairs.

In the Pacific, the 11th Airborne was using small recon and liasion planes to drop platoons or at most companies ahead of the main formation to act as an anvil to the main advance's hammer. In one notable instance on Leyte, the 11th's entire parachute artillery complement jumped onto a steep hill deep in Japanese territory because they would have a 360° field of fire and the Japanese wouldn't be able to dislodge them. It worked but they had to leave all of their guns up on that hill (which are probably still up there today) when the main advance got to them, and as a result they had to fight as a regular infantry formation until they left Leyte.
To Nate that might sound familiar, because they were literally doing helicopter assault tactics without the helicopters. So once the choppers proliferated, it's no wonder parachute drops became obsolete, because 9/10 times if you were doing a combat drop in WW2, it wasn't in much more than company strength. This wasn't just the US Army in the Pacific, but the Soviets, the Germans, and the Italians (both ours and theirs) were doing these proto-chopper drops all throughout the war.

Brandon P

Have I ever seen the movie Memphis Belle? You mean what is in my brain a vehicle for the world’s hottest redhead Eric Stolz??? Is it wrong, that me a fellow ginge, fully zeroed in on the twink poet?

mumbles march

They trained gunners on the backs of trucks with pintle mounted shotguns that had M2 handles and triggers. They’d drive down the road and shoot clay pigeons flung from the truck.

David Schuller

Regarding music at the end- how the Demo remains your favorite despite later work, that's me with Arcade Fire. Their EP is so good. Funeral is great, Reflektor is great, but their EP is still something I listen to every time I have a long drive.

Alive Or Trees

I've flown in a B-17, B-24, and B-25 (in the US, these tour the country and you can take a 30 minute flight in them). They are all just nothing more than tin cans with wings that somehow stay up in the air. I feel a sneeze can puncture it.

Matthew Mayton

The funny thing about the B26 is, once they trained the crews, modified the airframe, and stopped trying to make it do those missions- it become one of the best medium bombers of the war with one of the highest rates of survival. Teething issues would be a common theme with a number of US aircraft ( especially bombers) during the war.

Noblesse Oblahaj

I’ve seen plenty of nudity at Bains des Pâquis in Geneva, but it’s always an old white person

Matt Taylor

Though the final version of the Marauder didn't have the Big Nose Gun, there were a lot of WW2 planes that had them. The Soviets built a fighter around a 45mm cannon. The US had a variant of the B25 with a 75mm howitzer. The Italians built a heavy bomber with a 102mm cannon

Noblesse Oblahaj

Gotta love waking up to a new episode on my birthday.

Bryant Mitchell

1: The Enola Sotadic Zone 2: The gay bomb is a real thing and definitely not a nuke.

Matt

Awww yeah, just wake up and a new Donk episode? Today is gonna be great.

William Shackelford

And here I am getting stuck on if it's an uppercase i or a lowercase L

Sparky

I’m just anticipating how Joe is going to pronounce IJmuiden
