As someone who grew up going to Japanese school on the weekends (which teaches you the same curriculum you'd get in Japan for math and language class), stories and poems about how people died and suffered from the atom bomb drops are just part of core curriculum, starting in like grade school. And they are haunting stories.

2025-03-05 12:30:22 +0000 UTCWould be very open to seeing you tackle what's happened in Myanmar with Hussein + Phoebe. Might still be too recent/ongoing, but it seems like a synthesis of LLBD + 10k Posts' areas of expertise

2025-02-21 09:16:04 +0000 UTCI love Junji Ito. Every interview with him makes him seem like the most precious cinnamon roll who gives us all new phobias and nightmares.

2025-02-21 00:25:54 +0000 UTC2:25 The latest Magic: the Gathering set has an image of one of the characters standing in front of a red motorcycle similar to the poster I've seen in every other weeb's dorm room/ office cube.

2025-02-20 23:56:22 +0000 UTCOn the topic of biker gang movies I 1000% reccomend Quadrophenia. 60s UK Mod subculture Rock Opera by The Who. One of my favorite movies and albums.

2025-02-20 15:51:57 +0000 UTCNate. If you like the incredible body horror of Akira, go read some Junji Ito. Christ, that man is good at what he does.

2025-02-20 12:33:15 +0000 UTCI was about to come here to talk about Bartkira and Joe already knew about it, incredible. I hung out with someone who was friends with Ryan Humphrey and had a pile of these panels started in ~2013. Her panel is 116 in volume 3

2025-02-20 01:21:47 +0000 UTCI remember reading a big, and I mean, to like 13 year old me, this book was huge, version of Akira, cover to cover, twice. No idea what happened to it. But because of it, I have developed some sort of word association between Akira and Aguirre: Wrath of God, which results in me thinking the name of the movie Akira is Akira: Wrath of God.

2025-02-20 00:38:23 +0000 UTCThat is totally fair. It's a silly premise even for a cartoon let alone a violent comic book.

2025-02-20 00:24:45 +0000 UTCHooooly crap that's epic! Okay, I gotta read some of these. I was 9yo back in '89, with all of us playing Ninja Turtles in the school yard, watching all the episodes. I saw the original live action film in the cinema, and still have the soundtrack on cassette π€£ I heard of the comics as an adult, but I never knew what they were like.

2025-02-20 00:19:31 +0000 UTCAs a turtles fan. Yes. Michaelangelo gets an alien pregnant. But as for the violence. The first book imagine Leonardo missing an eye, bleeding. Looking dead at shredder and asks him "Do you fear us now, shredder?" Then decapitates him. My favorite run is their image comics run. Donnie becomes half turtle half robot, splinter is dying, raph is missing because he and Leo got into it. Splinter then gets kidnapped. Turtles track splinter down to shredders hideout. They get ready to fight shredder. It's raph. Raph killed shredder and took over his mantle with the foot. In which he now uses the foot to help patrol the streets. Okay. Sorry. I have taken up enough of everyone's time.

2025-02-19 23:30:52 +0000 UTCI remember encountering that TMNT porno (parody?) thing and I believe it was Michelangelo telling April, "Don't cut me no slack" before sex bobsledding him down several flights of stairs to Krang. It's just another one of those odd early to mid 2000s Internet culture things that will forever infest my memory until the sweet release of death. Oh no! Porkchop sandwiches!

2025-02-19 22:12:55 +0000 UTCGunbuster is incredible, always a top recommendation from me. It's nuts that there's such memery around Gainax endings when Gunbuster's is absolutely pristine.
Jonathan Reiter
2025-02-19 21:13:45 +0000 UTCSteamboy is the wet dream of steampunks, problem is it only caters steampunks. In some sense Otomo is the ultimate fan service director.

2025-02-19 21:11:04 +0000 UTCSomething very similar to Akira I feel obligated to recommend is βRoyal Space Forceβ the movie that bankrupted Gainax so they had to produce Gunbuster and Evagelion to make up for the loss. Royal Space Force was made one year before Akira and it is THE ULTIMATE ANIME (both in its strength and its flaw). It would make either a perfect lions led by robot episode (a rocket is also a robot, right?) or a perfect joint episode with failure to launch.
Umimoto Ou
2025-02-19 21:05:41 +0000 UTCThe movie is absolutely classic. For a year or more, when you went to Hulu's classic movie section it was only Akira. Also the manga is so incredible, I have a full size tattoo of one panel.

2025-02-19 19:06:08 +0000 UTCTIL they did a redub. And thank you all for telling me that Leonardo was Kaneda in the old dub! I knew that voice was familiar!

2025-02-19 18:10:32 +0000 UTCI wished they would have adapted the rest of the Akira manga in animation. Simialr to ralph bakshi's adapation lord of the rings where he adapted 2/3 of the novels, but not the rest. Like sure it might not be as great as you think, but it feel incomplete

2025-02-19 17:47:47 +0000 UTCOn the matter of AMVs, I used to judge for various anime conventions. The years after FF Advent Children came out were dreadful. The same slop over and over again until you just hate by default until there was a charmingly homoerotic one; well edited, decent song, and actually tried to tell a story, and did not just use the same fight scenes - it scored well.

2025-02-19 16:54:58 +0000 UTCAlso it cool to see different art style. It like those re-animation video where every few seconds we another artist do a scence. It a cool patch up

2025-02-19 16:09:35 +0000 UTCAkira aka manga/anime that gave us the look that megmai tensei's apocalypse will look. Also fitting as I recently completed getting all volume of the Akira manga.

2025-02-19 16:08:01 +0000 UTCI worked with a dude who worked on Bartkira. The coolest thing is the artist swaps out every 5 pages or so, so you get tons of different styles recreating this comic. Itβs like a living pastiche archive.
