EARLY EPISODE: The Battle of Cape Gloucester
Added 2025-01-26 09:46:33 +0000 UTCMarines storm ashore a rainforest-bound, diseased-filled, swampy death trap of an island to take an airfield with no strategic value.

Hate to admit but I was in that frat for a hot minute as a young (dumb…drunk) man at the university of Arizona (go wildcats) and they are way worse. An episode of criminal touches on it. J Edgar Hoover was a member (and apparently kept stuff out of the library of congress allegedly). I can teach you the secret handshake

2025-04-09 16:22:12 +0000 UTCThe second you mentioned the New Guinea Campaign, my heart sank. Growing up in Australia, hearing sooo much about Kokoda, that entire campaign, and how heinous the conditions are there...I knew I was in for a ride. Also, if you go there today you can still see old warplanes and airfields reclaimed by dense jungle and wreckages of Japanese mini-subs in the rivers.

2025-02-02 12:01:09 +0000 UTCYeah, between the salties, snakes, cassowaries, bullsharks and stonefish...the Japanese would have been utterly fucked. PNG just sounds like Tully but an entire country.

2025-02-02 11:52:42 +0000 UTCOnce i was at a Belushi Speedball show, and very much not in the pit, and someone in the pit bolted across the room and knocked me the fuck out. Great show tho.

2025-01-29 01:00:27 +0000 UTCI used to be so scared walking anywhere, they were in the ponds at fucking golf courses. I remember sitting up the hill from the river near Wujal Wujal and spotting 5 monsters in about 4 minutes. Nightmare material.

2025-01-28 23:38:33 +0000 UTCI should add that while everyone starts off the same, driving a car invariably turns people into psychopaths.

2025-01-28 18:31:19 +0000 UTCCyclists behave badly mainly towards pedestrians: Don’t ride your bike on the sidewalk unless you’re a child! Yield to me when I’m walking in the crosswalk! On the other hand: All power to you if you act this aggressively towards car drivers instead! (But yeah the type of guy who is defensive about cyclist discourse does tend to be the type of guy who will nearly bowl you over in a crosswalk. You should be busy keying a Mercedes instead of nearly killing me!)
Elsie Hupp
2025-01-28 18:29:09 +0000 UTCI’m not presently a cyclist, but I’m also not presently a car driver, and as a pedestrian I do sometimes wish I had a golf club to fend off aggressive drivers. (Absent the golf club, I try to pound the hood of the car if someone nearly runs into me.)
Elsie Hupp
2025-01-28 18:23:00 +0000 UTCOn the other hand, people who drive expensive cars have more expensive body-work repair bills… (Carry a golf club while cycling to defend yourself from the bodywork of expensive cars.)

2025-01-27 19:24:41 +0000 UTCIf you look at the Wikipedia article for New Britain there's a picture of members of the 1st Marine Division holding captured flags and they look miserable. They also look like they want to kill the photographer, but that could just be the various diseases that they're suffering from.

2025-01-27 15:14:23 +0000 UTCI always do an epic eye roll when the “everything in Australia wants to kill you” line gets rolled out but oh boy that does not apply to the Far North…..There is a literal bird that shrieks at night like a woman screaming. I remember an old woman and a little kid separately getting taken by a croc when I lived in FNQ. The rainforest is so dense there are parts where no light penetrates. I don’t think the Japanese would have gotten past Cooktown.

2025-01-26 18:32:53 +0000 UTCHey! I was in Kappa Alpha Order, and it’s worse than you think! The “secret” ritual is nearly entirely lifted from the masons, and it’s entirely themed around the templars going on crusades against saracens. It’s very fucked, and I met only terrible people the entire time I was in it.

2025-01-26 16:57:54 +0000 UTCYou are not imagining it, there's been research that people who drive more expensive cars, drive more dangerously, especially towards pedestrians and cyclists.

2025-01-26 15:18:03 +0000 UTCIt may be quite awkward but as a gay man who felt HIDEOUSLY naked by mishima's pen, & who has a fascination with historical gays... Well it is worth remembering that Mishima did not see combat; & his oath is one which... a lot of gays radicalize themselves into that bullshit. But had Yukio run into a buncha kitted out giant bros... he would have renounced fascism, he would have written no novels, just extremely EXTREMELY horny odes to White Monster, shoulder hair, & that inedible chocolate bar.

2025-01-26 15:12:34 +0000 UTCIf you want a decent book about not just tanking in the Pacific theatre, but military life in general. Cutthroats: Adventures of a Sherman Tank Driver in the Pacific is a good one. You can tell it's authentic because the author talks about things like dodging duty, running from the MP s, stealing rations, and blowing up the transmission in a tank

2025-01-26 13:46:55 +0000 UTCAs someone who cooks a lot, and is a food historian, a lot of people get kitchen appliances and fancy ingredients and never use them. They have these huge kitchens with a full set of magnificent pans, either a KitchenAid or Kenwood with all the accessories, a massive spice collection, heaps of different oils and vinegars - and none of it is ever used.
