EARLY EPISODE: The New York Draft Riots of 1863

Conscription, it turns out, is very unpopular.

If you give firefighters an excuse to break shit they absolutely will

Rosemary S Callahan Gray

Ummm you failed to mention the guy directing the New York Times Gatling gun was WINSTON CHURCHILL’S GRANDFATHER!

William Wright

I just noticed the robotic “Lions Led by Donkeys” in the bagpipe intro 🫡

Mitch Guerrerio

Warming impact persist long past 15 years, if he'd mentioned "btw this was an absolutely omnicidal choice I made back then", I'd have said nothing at all. 2 more generations of people living this way and we're absolutely cooked, people would rather lose it all for their kids' kids then adjust their expectations, admit that the good life must entail fewer flights

Tristan Ryan

At this point, that was like, what, 15 years ago? We were all different people in our 20s. I was a weirdo libertarian climate change skeptic that long ago, and now I'm pretty far left and way more conscientious. Giving him shit for a trip he made a long time ago when he probably didn't even realize the impact of his choices is pretty sus.

Eric A Gentzler

I deployed with an IRR Marine who I had just seen EAS a few months before. "I miss doing coke with my wife in Colorado." That was a rough hand he was delt.

Thomas A Boulay

Firefighters joining the riots and starting fires is one of the most on brand things I have heard

Rosemary S Callahan Gray

Here in Texas, the only counties that voted against secession were the counties that were overwhelmingly German. This didn't go unnoticed by the CSA, which unfortunately led to the CSA rolling through these German-speaking towns and forcing men at gunpoint to join the army. Some tried (and failed) to escape to Mexico, leading to the Nueces Massacre (Wikipedia has a good entry on it). My several-times-great-grandfather on my mom's side was one of the men that joined in lieu of execution. The family legend we heard growing up was that none of his fellow German-speaking regiment wanted anything to do with this war, and immediately surrendered to the first Union troops they came across when they were sent to reinforce Vicksburg.

Jake Rawls

I have extended family who like to play up their Cherokee heritage (we have none to my knowledge and we're pasty white). My sister once said, during one of these times, if it can't be used for a scholarship, it doesn't count. Got a lot of stink eyes from family that day.

Matthew Mayton

Cool thing about German immigrant enlistments in places like Missouri (where they were referred to as Dutch by Scotch-Irish and Anglos) is that they were largely very staunch abolitionists who stopped the entirety of the state from being lost to Rebel ding dongs galavanting on horseback - your General Price and such. I guess a large population of the Germans were failed revolutionaries from 1830s-1848, pretty radical dudes. It’s an interesting contrast to immigrant reactionary behaviors. Nate’s aside about southern Indiana vs Great Lake Midwest made me think of that. Missouri is definitely very similar in that regard.

Lol grow up, engage with the impacts. If everyone lived and consumed that way, we'd be doomed https://www.theguardian.com/environment/ng-interactive/2019/jul/19/carbon-calculator-how-taking-one-flight-emits-as-much-as-many-people-do-in-a-year

Tristan Ryan

Random I love the new opening music

Krys Block

You've succeeded in spurring me from my blissful neutrality though not in a direction you would have preferred. I want Nate to fly more now after reading this comment.

Brandon P

It's like professions that Joe hasn't worked.

Brandon P

What a coincidence, the name of my new punk band is The Teds Nugent.

Brandon P

Single most impactful discretionary consumer decision a person can make, die on the biggest hill you can find

Tristan Ryan

There are 90,00 people permanently suspended above US airspace. Some commute for work on a damn plane. Pick a different hill to die on.

Rylan May

When Hong Christ, the Dicksucking Union, and the LLBD Death Note show up in the same episode, you know it’s going to be a good episode.

Paloma Alcala

Nate where tf have you not lived??

God Emperor Leto II Atriedes

The Detroit Lions pick Joesph Kassassbian for the 2024 draft..

William Shackelford

As a person who lives in Valdosta Georgia and have gone to the battle reenactments before, like the one close to me, Battle of Olustee. The confederate actors, majority of them still believe America went wrong by telling individuals you can’t own people anymore as property. Don’t go to civil war reenactments anymore because of people like that.

William Shackelford

This is art

William Shackelford

There are some advantages to being a New Yorker in 1860s

William Shackelford

no clue tbh

kliachichka

Best part of being on a hurling team in New York State is getting to assault NYPD officers and not getting arrested for it.

Brendan Bonner

Nate's 2 day Santiago trip with 5 leg flights to racking up like 1.5 years of per capita carbon emissions for keeping to 1.5 degrees warming threshold. Biggest outstanding area of cognitive dissonance among otherwise conscientious people

Tristan Ryan

Incredible comment to read with no context.

Awfullyconfused

If Gary Busey buttfucked Ted Nugent, Kid Rock is what would shoot out his ass and on to the floor.

Spaghetti

I really need to watch Warrior. It keeps popping up as either a recommendation or in conversation.

Allison Riley

Yep. And Warrior did as well

Nicholas Slayton

I don’t suppose your government allows for conscientious objectors to do non combat roles?

Jason Machacek

Tom calling Robbie Keane a terrible footballer… Tom don’t know ball…

Chase Porfily

Can confirm, the confederate declarations of secession all said “we want to keep slavery and we’re scared Lincoln will try to ban it”. The Civil War was over slavery, period.

Matt

Jordan Love would engage in a draft riot and that is why he is QB

Mutual Aid Miniatures

Okay but Maureen Dowd on a crew served weapon is objectively hilarious

Tyrone Slothrust

When y’all started talking about firefighters at the end where they would put out the fires they started made me think of like a mad max version of after the bombs fall in Fahrenheit 451. Those firefighters that used to only start fires now roam as a gang with one tube of flamethrower and one tube of water and threaten every settlement they find. A mad max souped up insano monster truck firefighting engine is a must too.

Thomas Cain

To be fair. If you made it till your 80s in the 19th century. You are probably a stern individual with no health problems and you are probably in pretty decent shape compared to 40 year old day laborers

Jim Heeren

The Big Stinky Apple

William Shackelford

What if instead of Gangs of New York, Leonardo DiCaprio’s character is played by Waluigi and the final fight scene instead of charging with homemade weapons, it rainbow road Mario kart with muskets and knives.

William Shackelford

aw man shout out to the trans folks who name themselves affter anime characters like thats normal

Lain of the Wired

Chicago > NY. Burned to the ground. Was rebuilt with city planning in mind.

Rylan May

Sundays are for football. And new LLBD drops.

Rylan May

Wasn't the bbc america show copper using this as a background

Allison Riley

I just watched that highly accurate documentary last week.

Doug King

it used to make some sort of sense back when the rich guys were either politicians or industrial magnates, now the only ones left to "keep the economy going" would be javascript developers

kliachichka

Fdny cut through an open roll up gate of mine. No locks, wasn’t stuck in place. Wasn’t needed to gain access to anything. If all you have is a gas powered diamond tipped circular saw, everything’s fair game.

Hammerthrust Von Sexron

As a Minnesotan I’m mightily impressed by Tom’s familiarity with the city of Bumfuck, Iowa.

Would you believe me if I told you that in Ukraine our dumbass government has been floating around the idea of buying your way out of the draft for like a year. Worked great last time guys

kliachichka

From the historical documentary Gangs of New York??

Alex Varrus

General Wool was one of Generals who oversaw the Trail of Tears... so he did infact support genocide.
