2024-08-23 13:46:45 +0000 UTCI should add, among the Italian POWs Donovan could've chosen were entire teams of Italian special forces who surrendered in North Africa - Folgore paratroopers, Flottiglia Decima MAS frogmen, and Auto-Sahara scouts (the guys who were fighting the LRDG a lot of the time), and a LOT of these guys would end up fighting the Germans on Italy anyway.

2024-08-23 12:34:31 +0000 UTCWhat makes the OSS recruiting effort even dumber is that by the time they're ready to invade the Italian peninsula, they already had over 100,000 Italian POWs, many of whom would've been glad to fight the Germans (and eventually would) as well as a burgeoning homegrown resistance movement from which they could've handpicked operatives. They did not NEED Tony Stagnoli from 92nd street in Ozone Park.
